Who am I?

Movies are my main passion and podcasts come a very close second. Mostly I listen to podcasts about film production and analysis. The first movie that I remember seeing is A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 when I was around 4 years old. Now, I was not supposed to be watching this, in fact I was meant to be asleep. Little did my parents know that I had angled the duvet cover so that they could not see my face and watched the movie. I think that event helped spark a lifelong interest in movies. Generally speaking, for the next decade, it would be my Nan that helped cement my interest into an obsession and the main VHS collection lived at her house. All these years later I am now working in the film industry and get to see what goes on behind the scenes. This gives me insight on productions schedules, budgets, scripts techniques and equipment used to make a feature. And as a fan, I am still watching an average of more than 1 movie a day year on year and a keen purchaser of physical media. Before we met, my partner and I had our own movie podcasts so between us, we had quite a few years of podcasting experience under our belt. So it felt like it would have been rude not to start our own movie podcast.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Each week we watch and review a movie based on the theme for that season. For example, our first season was cops so we covered 8 cop films. We generally talk for around an hour for each feature and draw upon our experience watching and analysing movies and having a bit of fun talking about them. We generally combine a mixture of thoughtful analysis, trivia and comedy when talking about the film we’ve chosen and

What is my podcast playlist about?

My playlist is purely based on podcasts about movies. I like to listen to episodes of around an hour plus as I like to explore films in detail. Both in terms of the reviewers experience and any related production stories and trivia.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Creative Psychopaths - A Horror Movie Podcast

Why this podcast?

Creative Psychopaths is a horror movie podcast with each episode focused mainly on one film and released weekly. This is one of those podcasts that I haven’t seen every film they cover, but I’d gladly listen to it anyway as it feels like tuning in to two friends just discussing a movie they’ve just seen. The conversational style makes it easy to listen to.

2. Filmshake - The ‘90s Movies Podcast

Why this podcast?

Filmshake is the 90s movie podcast and is the newest addition to my listening rotation. When I saw they had a 2 hour episode diving in to Speed I had to check it out. I was not disappointed, and I enjoyed the hosts and their guest laying praise on one of my favourite movies. It’s a good mix of criticism, trivia, humour and all-round passion for cinema and I’m now a loyal subscriber.

3. Verbal Diorama

Why this podcast?

Verbal Diorama. I’ve been listening to this one for years. I think the first episode I heard was very early on and covered Speed. It’s one of my top 10 movies of all time so I regularly do a search for Speed through various podcast player apps. Since then I regularly check out Verbal Diorama for the history and legacy of the film covered that week. Em is super passionate, knowledgeable and well researched in every episode.

Writers Joel Jessup and Chris Regan reimagine cult and classic movies by adding John Carpenter's The Thing into the story. Not even the two hosts understand why they are doing this but they'll figure it out, one movie at a time.

5. We Hate Movies

Why this podcast?

We Hate Movies have been podcasting for years and have over 850 episodes posted to their main feed. The first episode I heard was Event Horizon in mid 2022 on a road trip in the UK and I have probably listened to a good 50% of those 850 since then. Every instalment is filled with jokes and impressions and is just good fun.

Since 2010, the We Hate Movies podcast has been loudly celebrating and tearing apart movies from across the spectrum: from forgotten '80s actioners and insane romantic comedies of the '90s, to the early CGI blockbusters of the aughts and the hyper-nostalgic franchises of the 2010s and today. Every week, comedians Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Eric Szyszka, and Chris Cabin pick a movie from the near-past to discuss and joke around about in all its positive and negative glory.
