The best podcasts about history, made by historians.

Who am I?

I’m a historian and a podcaster myself. I know what a treasure trove of fascinating information historians have. Podcasts are a great way for historians to share our knowledge with the public. I think more people would enjoy hearing directly from historians, if they had the chance to do so. I’ve studied history for two main reasons: 1) To connect with a broader swath of humanity than just the people living at the same time as myself; and 2) to gain a deeper understanding of why the world is the way that it is today and how we got to where we are. Investigating the past opens up paths in these two directions.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast, 90 Second Narratives, explores global history from a wide range of perspectives. The guest storytellers are historians from all around the world who are experts in so many random and fascinating topics.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My playlist is comprised of podcasts made by fellow historians (most of whom I know). All the podcasts are about some aspect of history, but the emphases vary.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Drafting the Past

Why this podcast?

Drafting the Past is an interview podcast that focuses on the craft of writing. It offers such a cool spin on the book-author-interview genre of podcasts. I think anyone interested in being creative will enjoy the conversations.

Consolation Prize is a podcast about the United States in the world through the eyes of its consuls. The responsibility for the United States’ reputation in other parts of the world often fell squarely on the shoulders of consuls and they were the first ones called in when Americans got themselves in trouble or were mistreated while they were abroad. How they interpreted their duties sometimes got them involved in all kinds of complicated circumstances. And often, their actions on a personal level had ramifications far up the chain, even making a difference in national politics or international relations. Please join us as we travel the globe with nineteenth-century consuls!
