The Deer Tracks podcast is a place where creativity lives. Where our longings, our delights, our disappointments, and our passions are breathed out: marking the trail of our journey. These are the tracks we make and the ones we follow to find the deepest parts of ourselves: our true selves. During each episode, you will hear echoes of the past as well as current voices through discussions about and performances of creative works. Our goal is to build community and inspire others in their creative pursuits which is why we invite our listeners to submit their work for the opportunity of hearing it on a future episode or seeing it on our blog site by sending them [email protected]. All submissions must be appropriate for a general audience and should be original work. You can submit a recording of yourself performing your work, or you can submit the words to have James perform it; all we ask is that recordings run no longer than four minutes and thirty seconds or submissions to be read are no longer than one thousand words. Exceptions can be made based on literary form but as a general rule, we ask that submissions abide by the above criteria. For further questions, you can email those to the above email address.

Charles Darwin is one of most famous scientists of the nineteenth century, but what was he like as a child, a father and a husband? How did his emotional response to the world affect his scientific theories? And how widespread is his influence today? This album looks at Darwin's rich and complex legacy. Ruth Padel, one of his direct descendants, offers a series of unique insights into Darwin the man, through recollections of childhood conversations with her grandmother, readings from family letters and her own cycle of biographical poems. Within the scientific world, Darwin remains an inspirational figure both for evolutionary biologists and for many other practitioners. The Nigerian scientist, Sheila Ochugboju, reveals how influential Darwin has been on her own career, and Professor Colin Pillinger of The Open University compares the voyage of the Beagle with his recent mission to Mars. The album concludes with a visit to the Grant Museum of comparative biology at UCL in London, which is dedicated to Robert Edmond Grant, a professor of biology who was an important early influence on Darwin. The tracks on this album were produced by The Open University in collaboration with the British Council. They form part of Darwin Now, a global initiative celebrating the life and work of Charles Darwin and the impact his ideas about evolution continue to have on today’s world. © The British Council 2009.

If you've heard and loved that delightful nursery rhyme/lullaby, Wynken Blynken and Nod you'd certainly enjoy browsing through its creator Eugene Field's Love Songs of Childhood. The volume contains some forty or more poems for children, which are ideal for read aloud sessions with young folks. Parents will certainly enjoy reading them too. Most of these poems have been set to music and are ideal for family sing-alongs too. Eugene Field was a gifted humorist as well as being a talented children's writer. His father was a famous lawyer who fought the infamous Dred Scott case which is often dubbed “the case that started the American Civil War.” Field Sr. died when Eugene was still a young man still in college. Subsequently, Eugene dropped out of college due to financial constraints and he tried many professions before settling down to write. His column in The Chicago Daily News, called Sharps and Flats was very popular in its day and earned him the reputation of being a light-hearted satirist who poked good-natured fun at contemporary events and people. He also wrote humorous verse and short stories. He was one of the few writers who wrote poetry exclusively for children, and it earned him the title of The Children's Poet. Love Songs of Childhood contains some appealing verses, combining fantasy, nonsense and innocent fun. The Delectable Ballad of the Waller Lot, for instance is patterned on those famous ballads in history where fair maidens are carried off by dastardly villains – but this one is a parody and has a mischievous twist at the end! Nonsense verses like Googly-Goo and The Bench-legged Fyce are reminiscent of Edward Lear or Lewis Carroll. Poems like Rock-a-bye-Lady have become an integral part of children's literature. Many towns in America have parks and statues dedicated to Eugene Fields or the characters he created. A charming addition to your bookshelf!

The Symposium (Ancient Greek: Συμπόσιον) is a philosophical book written by Plato sometime after 385 BCE. On one level the book deals with the genealogy, nature and purpose of love, on another level the book deals with the topic of knowledge, specifically how does one know what one knows. The topic of love is taken up in the form of a group of speeches, given by a group of men at a symposium or a wine drinking party at the house of the tragedian Agathon at Athens. Plato constructed the Symposium as a story within a story within a story. This architecture creates the space for Plato to build his philosophy of knowledge. The speech of Socrates points out that the highest purpose of Love is to become a Philosopher, or Lover of Wisdom.

The Joyful Wisdom (later translated as The Gay Science), written in 1882, just before Zarathustra, is rightly judged to be one of Nietzsche’s best books. Here the essentially grave and masculine face of the poet-philosopher is seen to light up and suddenly break into a delightful smile. The warmth and kindness that beam from his features will astonish those hasty psychologists who have never divined that behind the destroyer is the creator, and behind the blasphemer the lover of life. In the retrospective valuation of his work which appears in Ecce Homo the author himself observes with truth that the fourth book, “Sanctus Januarius,” deserves especial attention: “The whole book is a gift from the Saint, and the introductory verses express my gratitude for the most wonderful month of January that I have ever spent.” Book fifth “We Fearless Ones”, the Appendix “Songs of Prince Free-as-a-Bird,” and the Preface, were added to the second edition in 1887.

Written by one of the most significant American poets, Fire and Ice proficiently tackles the continuous query about how the world will cease to exist, whether it will go up in flames, or succumb to the cruelty of ice. First published in Harper’s Magazine in 1920 and later included in his acclaimed anthology New Hampshire, Frost effectively employs the use of simple, yet evocative language that assigns each syllable a significant purpose in the poem, while simultaneously concentrating on a perplexing topic. Comprised of only nine lines, the lyrical poem introduces a narrator who presents the divided opinions on how the world will end, whilst also expressing his own judgment in order to validate each possibility and its effectiveness. Additionally, the poem is presumed to have been inspired by a passage from Dante Alighieri’s epic poem Inferno, which depicts the punishment of souls in the nine circles of hell, sentenced to either experience the pain of fire, or be subjected to the confinement within a frozen lake. Nevertheless, Frost efficiently depicts the degree of severity induced by both elements.

Iran has a history that is steeped in poetry, music and art, an identity that has spread far beyond its borders. Time & Again considers Iran’s potent history through the epic poem, the Shahnama. No matter what gender, generation, class, religion or political inclination, every single Persian knows about the Shahnama. It is a text that tells tales of warriors and kings, love and betrayals and that has lasted for thousands of years, the resonance of which remains. This podcast explores this text through the lens of the artists and scholars that feel inspired by it and appreciate how a work of art, a poem, is one of the bedrocks of Persian society.

This podcast series is inspired by the exhibition In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art, curated by Linda Komaroff, on view at LACMA from May 6 to September 9, 2018.

Hosted by actor/comedian Maz Jobrani, and LACMA curator Linda Komaroff.
