Villette by Charlotte Brontë

Villette was Charlotte Bronte's last published novel. It came out in 1853, just two years before her death in 1855. It is a poignant, strangely lonely and sad work, steeped in conflict between society's demands and personal desires. Set in the fictional town of Villette in France, it is the story of the young and intelligent Lucy Snowe, the narrator in the book. She is described by another character in the book as having “no beauty...no attractive accomplishments...” and strangely seems to lack a personal history or living relatives. Her godmother Mrs. Bretton looks after the orphaned Lucy, who suddenly leaves the house for a reason that is not made clear to readers. She finds employment as a companion to an elderly widow, Mrs. Marchmont. When her employer dies, Lucy is left without a job or prospects. Impulsively, she decides to travel to Europe and en route, meets the young and spoiled heiress, Ginevra Fanshaw, a student of a girls' school in Villette. Lucy then travels to Villette to work first as a nanny to the principal's children and later as a teacher. Here she encounters two men who will play a great role in her life. The young and handsome Dr. John Bretton, her godmother's grandson, and the arrogant, bad tempered Professor Paul Emmanuel, a fellow lodger at her boarding house who gradually begins to thaw towards Lucy. The rest of the story follows Lucy's life in Villette. Lucy Snowe is not a very lovable heroine. She is passive, secretive and yet she excites the reader's interest and compassion and one is compellingly drawn into her story. Villette is also a novel with deep psychological underpinnings. Many have dubbed it even greater than Jane Eyre. It is also one of Bronte's most autobiographical works. The story harks back to the time when Charlotte and Emily Bronte traveled to Brussels to work in a small pensionnat run by M. Constantin Heger and his wife. Charlotte is reputed to have fallen deeply and hopelessly in love with M. Heger. Paul Emmanuel is said to be based on Heger, while John Bretton is a fictional portrayal of George Murray Smith, her publisher who had once courter her. Villette was written at a time when Bronte was deeply depressed following the deaths of three of her siblings. It was also criticized by contemporary reviewers for its depiction of a woman's passions and desires, something which Victorian audiences were a little shocked by. For modern day readers, Villette presents a great writer, working at the peak of her powers, overcoming personal tragedy to bring her art to the world.

A collection of short stories, each connected to Forget What You Can't Remember by a minor character, a passing situation, or an unanswered question therein. While giving more depth and more details to the people and events of that novel, nine more narratives are revealed. Sex, pain, violence and zombies, tech support for a flying city, religious prophecies fulfilled, true love and lasting marriage, re-engineered doomsday devices, gourmet cannibalism, and a whole lot more. What happened to the two guys who were supposed to be running the zombie survival course? What would the experience of a mixed martial arts competition be like for someone with an amazing sense of smell? What are the stories behind Fantastician's other encounters? What about the details of Lance's restaurant? And, what did Brady work on after the stunning conclusion of the novel? Answers to all these questions, along with a story which further connects the events of Lost and Not Found with Forget What You Can't Remember by bringing the main characters of one book into the setting of the other, can be found in More Lost Memories. Delve deeper. Find out more. Enjoy.
Night and Day by Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf is one of the most influential and controversial feminine figures in the literary life of the London society. Night and Day is one of her first novels published in 1919 which displays the moral and spiritual issues that people confront. The author herself was an emotionally unstable person, her episodes of mental illness and suicidal depression being recurrent and always brought into the public attention. The novel revolves around the life of the main character, Katherine Hilbery, a superb girl, free spirited and living in her twenties. Being the only child of a traditional English family, Katherine spends her time surrounded by intellectual ideas, literature, and family duties. The young lady is pursued by two gentlemen, William Rodney and Ralph Denham. The first one sees Katherine as the perfect image of womanhood, a strong feminine figure delimited by strong moral laws. Ralph is different; he is the idealistic kind of person who falls in love with her at a first sight. He is loved, at his turn, by Mary, but Woolf decides to make the narration even more exciting by introducing a new feminine figure, Katherine’s cousin, Cassandra. Virginia Woolf depicts the gender difference by creating female figures like Katherine who consider themselves strong enough to have an independent life. These ladies delay marriage because they follow their own interest, and they see the full satisfaction in the work they do. This novel will hold your attention with the conflict played out between traditional roles and the emerging modern view of Women.

He is a wealthy gifted and handsome young pianist who worships beauty. She is a woman blessed with a divine voice, but a less than beautiful appearance. He proposes, but she cannot believe that his love will last. A tragic accident results in his losing his eyesight. She hears about the accident and takes up employment as his nurse without revealing her identity. This forgotten, 1910 best-seller still holds the power to charm and delight the modern-day reader. One of the most poignant love stories ever written, The Rosary by Florence Louisa Barclay takes its title from the name of a song that was a chart-buster in the early twentieth-century. The sentimental song written by American lyricist Ethelbert Nevin became an instant hit and features in the novel as the song in which the ill-fated lovers meet for the first time. The heroine Jane Champion is gifted with true inner beauty which shines through in her sublime voice. When a star singer fails to appear at a garden party, Jane is asked to step in and keep the guests entertained. Her simple, pure and sweet rendition captures the heart of the pianist, Garth Dalmain who falls deeply in love with her. However, she doubts the sincerity of his love and refuses his proposal, not realizing that people can often see behind appearances and fall in love with beautiful souls. The intense, passionate and enduring love that overcomes all obstacles is indeed the true hero of this story. Florence Louisa Barclay was the wife of a rector in Surrey, England. Her health suffered after continuous childbirth and the strain of looking after a large family and she was bedridden for many months. During this time, she began writing her first novel, The Wheels of Time. In 1909, she published her second book, The Rosary, which went on to become wildly popular on both sides of the Atlantic. She continued writing 11 more very successful books, some of which were carried as serials in popular women's journals. The Rosary was translated into 8 languages and adapted for stage, television and screen several times. Five movies have been made based on the original story. The interesting and lively style, steeped in the atmosphere of pre-War England, rich in imagery and emotion is indeed a great read for young and old alike. Far from being a mawkish and maudlin love story, its charm lies in its enduring appeal, wit and old-fashioned focus on loyalty, love, compassion and the true union of souls.

Hello and welcome to Love Your Shelves – an anthology podcast from the Ulverscroft Group and Choc Lit.

Samuel Johnson once wrote that “the greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write; a man will turn over half a library to make one book”. In Love Your Shelves we’re asking some of our favourite romance authors to name and discuss the books they’ve spent the most time with.

We’ll be discussing first loves, literary liaisons that have lasted a lifetime and much more as we delve their shelves and find what books they’ve fallen in love with and which have left them cold. We hope you can join us.

Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is a book about the life of Catherine Morland and her romantic relationships. The novel is divided into two parts; the first part begins with Catherine’s visit to Bath and her relationship with Henry Tilney and the other people she met there, and the second part starts with the arrival of Frederick Tilney and her visit to Northanger Abbey. This book alongside Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility is considered one of the major works of Jane Austen. The novel had undergone many revisions before its publication and it was even originally titled “Catherine.” It adopted the title Northanger Abbey when it was published posthumously in 1817. Catherine Morland, the main character in the book is an attractive girl in her late-teens who was invited by her family’s friends, the Allens to go with them to Bath for a holiday. There she discovered many things in life which she hasn’t known before. She met many new friends there including Isabella, who became her close friend and rival to some of her relationships. Aside from her, she also met Henry Tilney, a person who turned out to be very special to her. Catherine also met John, Isabella’s brother who’ll later attempted to propose marriage to her. Meanwhile, her brother James met Isabella during their vacation and eventually had a serious relationship with her. Northanger Abbey isn’t just a novel about the romantic relationships of the different characters in the story. It also discusses other issues in society at that time like marriage for property and financial gain and the shallow attitude of some people have when it comes to love. Many critics also call this book a “Gothic parody.” For sure, people who have already read “Sense and Sensibility” or “Pride and Prejudice,” will also love this book.

Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace chronicles the lives of five Russian aristocratic families during Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Many considered this book to be the best Russian work of literature of all time and it is massive in scale. The book is divided in four volumes and the chapters don't just contain the narrative of the plot to the novel but philosophical discussions as well. This may be intimidating to average book readers but they shouldn't be discouraged to try reading War and Peace. After all, this book was written for all and not just for intellectuals. The five wealthy families followed are the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Rostovs, Kuragins and the Drubetskoys in the early 19th century especially during the time when Napoleon invaded Russia. Like with Tolstoy's other novels, it also tells about the different social problems in Russian high society like the fathering of illegitimate children of wealthy Russians, financial ruin of some families due to incompetence, their vanity despite the poverty which surrounds them and so on. The lives of the main characters from the different families are intertwined in the novel with friendships and conflicting interests. War and Peace is also a historical novel. Napoleon himself is one of its main characters and a huge part of the book was about him. It's very impressive that Tolstoy was able to depict him very accurately in this novel. Besides him, Tolstoy was also very accurate about his descriptions of the historical events during that time like the Battle of Borodino, Napoleon's invasion of Moscow and others. This book doesn't just narrate the trials, problems and conflicts between the different characters in the novel but also provides philosophical insights to historical events. It's always interesting to learn about history from another point of view not just from what was told in history books.

"Hey Man, I’ve Heard You Sold Your Dreams" is a collection of literary works by Benjamin G. Dubel. It is a treasure trove of poems that reaches deep into the mind and soul of youth with all its innocence and infinite wisdom. The author was but 17 years old when most of these were composed, yet they reflect a depth and maturity of someone who has experienced so much more in such a short time. His observations and thoughts of life, as well as various events he witnesses during this tumultuous time of development, are warm and heartfelt. The poems unleash an unbridled spirit and raw honesty of emotion as the author takes us on a journey throughout the ebbs and flows of his life. The struggles and grace of transcending into adulthood lie tenderly within the phrases of passion, pain, joy and confusion. He manages to collect and articulately document his thoughts and feelings on many facets of life. He captures the essence of the moment and writes with such clarity that is becomes easy to share in the experience. From heartache to heartbreak, disappointment to elation, each poem is chock full of some pivotal point in a youth’s life. The poem written in response to the Columbine massacre for example, shares a message of disdain and disappointment for such a heinous act. He calls out the vigilantes' “one-way ticketed suicidal mission” and the sadness and memories left behind. In the poem entitled “Dreams”, his inspirational thoughts state “Life isn’t as hard as you think it seems, it’s always easier to look back and laugh” and in another segment “It’s a shame you had to go and let the best years of your life get you down”. Despite various components of challenge and adversity, the author somehow manages to find a positive spin of hope and revelation. This is a tribute to youth, both young and old and serves as testament that life is not easy, nor is it intended to be, but shows that in the end, you will be much richer for having lived through the experiences. Here are two examples from the collection of 130 poems: Poem 1 There are times I find myself sitting here wondering, if I ever see you again someday, could you forgive me? Even though it seems like you are so far away these days I look back now just to see I’ve been left behind ... and if I could ever stand back up after falling down I know things would be different this time around. Well, I guess this is where I stand now before you forever guilty as sin, for everything I’ve done. But what difference does that make now anymore there’s a part of me that’s dead inside ... knowing only memories, my mind keeps going blank as the thoughts of you wash away this time around. 2004 Poem 2 * "Dreams" Hey man ... I hear you sold your dreams. Why did you run down the wrong path? Life isn’t as hard as you think it seems, it’s always easier to look back and laugh. Are you mad ‘cuz there’s no one to blame? Were you hoping that we would listen? I’m sorry that this happened, it’s a shame. There’s a way out but something is missin'. Hey man ... I tried to tell you but you were always never around. It’s a shame you had to go and let the best years of your life get you down. So look at you now, is this where you stand? Why do you keep your mind in prison? You had so much going for you as a man but it looks like you have lost your vision. Hey man ... you know I cried for you but no one ever seemed to care. Nothing anyone can say will correct the past, so I just hope you’ve found your way there.

Niece and aunt duo, Jessen Judice and (author) Juliette Cross, bond over their shared love of romance novels, and want to include fellow romance enthusiasts in on the conversation. We started this podcast as a big middle finger to the stigma associated with reading and loving romance novels. We love to fangirl about our favorite books, authors, and characters and are challenging people to think of romance novels as more than just "mommy porn" - though there's nothing wrong with a copious amount of sexy times. Bring that *ish on!
This one goes out to all the fangirls! Life's better with a little HEA.
