The best podcasts to Inspire me to create something

Who am I?

Hi. I'm an actor and voiceover actor. I do voices for commercials, video games and a tiny bit of animation. I make an audioseries about vampires as a hobby that I write and produce and voice. An expert? Oh no. Nothing of the sort. These are podcasts I chose because they've moved me in one way or another.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I picked these because they really stand out in all my podcast listenings. They may inspire directly, they may entertain, or they may inform.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Once Upon a Time… at Bennington College

Why this podcast?

This is a great podcast about the very quirky Bennington College in Vermont and its history of producing some pretty influential authors (Donna Tartt, Brett Easton Ellis) at a very specific time in its history. It got me into Donna Tartt, which inspired me to write again.

It’s the groves of academe: Bennington College, the wildest and wickedest school in America. In the last great decade: the 1980s. Bennington class of ’86, class of Bret Easton Ellis, future writer of American Psycho and co-leader of the literary Brat Pack; Jonathan Lethem, future writer of Motherless Brooklyn and MacArthur Fellow; and Donna Tartt, future writer of The Secret History and Pulitzer Prize winner. All three are, at various times, infatuated and disappointed with one another, their friendships stimulated and fueled by rivalry as much as affection. And all three will mythologize Bennington in their fiction—fiction that, as we’ll discover, isn’t always fiction, is often fact—and thereby become myths themselves. From Vanity Fair's Lili Anolik, comes the latest installment in the Once Upon a Time... franchise, Once Upon a Time... at Bennington College. This is a tale of money, murder, madness, and—of course—genius. This is, too, a multi-dimensional expose: the secret history of The Secret History revealed; the secret history of three of the greatest writers of Generation X revealed; and the secret history of Generation X itself revealed. Once Upon a Time at...Bennington College is an Audacy original. This follows Season One: Once Upon a Time...in the Valley, a real-life psychological thriller about underage adult star Traci Lords.

2. Missed Fortune

Why this podcast?

This podcast is about obsession. About healing past traumas. About a treasure hunt. It's heartbreaking and fascinating. I love a journalist podcaster who really immerses themselves, because its also just a story about a creator making something.

When Forrest Fenn hid a chest full of gold, sapphires, and rubies somewhere in the Rocky Mountains in 2010, he tapped into something deep. It was like the American Dream reduced to its essence—an equal-opportunity quest for a small fortune. What seemed at first like a harmless poem containing nine treasure clues sent thousands on a journey of obsession and desperation. One searcher—Darrell Seyler—gave everything.

New episodes out every Monday.

Missed Fortune is an Apple Original podcast produced by High Five Content in association with 30 Minutes West and Outside Magazine. Listen and follow on Apple Podcasts.

3. Dead Eyes

Why this podcast?

Okay. This podcast doesn't need more press, but the way it inspires me is that it truly represents the struggle of the everyday actor. It also tells of making the most out of whatever ingredients you have to work with, which in this case is a very cringe and awkward anecdote from the show's creator. It's about Tom Hanks, but its also just about telling the story behind what it really feels like to be in the entertainment industry.

Actor/comedian Connor Ratliff (The Chris Gethard Show, UCB, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) embarks upon a quest to solve a very stupid mystery that has haunted him for two decades: why Tom Hanks fired him from a small role in the 2001 HBO mini-series, Band Of Brothers.

4. Obscure with Michael Ian Black

Why this podcast?

Michael Ian Black reading "Classic" Novels. Season 1 is a gutpunch at the end. I hesitate to recommend it and yet I could not stop talking about this podcast. I find it very soothing and Michael Ian Black is the best.

It's a book club, but funny!

Comedian Michael Ian Black is tackling a great work of literature: Wuthering Heights.

Join Michael's weekly book club as he reads aloud from a classic and asks people like Jen Kirkman, Mike Birbiglia, Michael Showalter, and even his teenage kids to weigh in with their perspectives.

Season 1: Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. The book is bleak, but Michael does a lot of accent work.

Season 2: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It's alive, and it's just a big buddy. Also, more accent work.

Season 3: Wuthering Heights. It's a love story? Who knows

Season 4: American Tragedy. Also a potential title of this podcast

5. IndoctriNation

Why this podcast?

I don't know how this inspires me to create, but it sure helps me process things sometimes. Get tired of Cult-related podcasts that are approached from a salacious angle? Well, granted there are many good ones that aren't that, but this one is in terrific hands, as the host is a practicing cult-specialized mental health professional. Trigger warnings on many episodes but truly a wonderful source of information on many aspects of trauma, cult related and otherwise.
