The best podcasts for writing great fiction

Who am I?

I'm Claire, I live in the UK and I'm passionate about writing great fiction that immerses readers in themes that help to educate and inspire them. I have been taking writing more seriously for a few years now and am working on my first novel. I want to write books that make people feel less alone when going through the tougher times in life, like grief, loss, loneliness, illness and relationship issues - but always with a bit of humour and hope - like my podcast 😉. I chose to do a list on this subject because writing is the best! I've had it in the background of my life since a child. Whether reading, singing, watching TV or writing, I've had a fascination with words and the endless possibilities of putting them in different orders to create moments that make people happy, sad, frustrated, angry, scared, hopeful... the list is endless. What's more wonderful than that?!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is about loss, grief and hope, all stemming from my own journey with childlessness. I chat to people who have been through any kind of loss, not just bereavements but relationships, achievements, health, jobs, limbs, senses, dreams, expectations etc etc. Loss and these sorts of themes are also at the heart of my fiction, especially how characters can find hope through the darker moments in life. Along my writing journey I've loved listening to podcasts about writing to hear how other writers do it, and to feel part of a community. They were the first podcasts I ever looked for.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast playlist is about how to write, why we write, tips and tricks for writing, discussion about writing, being published, getting an agent, self-publishing, screenwriting... and everything in-between. It's for anyone that loves writing fiction (and non-fiction, but I primarily sought these out for fiction). These are the people that keep me company on my writing journey and inspire me to keep going.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Story Grid Writing Podcast

Why this podcast?

This was the first writing podcast I found and I'd still recommend the early episodes to anyone that's coming to fiction writing from scratch. It taught me so much about genre, scenes, acts, beats and the general structure of books. An editor (Shawn) is teaching new writer (Tim) how to write a book that works - and there's so much to learn along the way. Hear the brutal feedback, advice and re-writes as they discuss Tim's progression each week. I recommend starting at the beginning of the podcast because it changed a lot over the years since.

2. The Manuscript Academy

Why this podcast?

I love this podcast. If you're interested in getting an agent and being published then this is the perfect podcast to find out how to write those query letters, what the first three pages should be delivering, what to put in a query letter, how to tackle the dreaded synopsis... So much great advice comes through hearing agents and writers being interviewed on this podcast. A must for someone looking to get traditionally published one day.

3. Writing in Progress

Why this podcast?

I recently found Justin and Jon's podcast and I'm loving tuning in to hear two normal guys talking about writing as their hobby. I love hearing about the competitions they've entered, how they did, what they're writing, their preferred genres and their opinions and tips for fiction writing. It's like hanging out with a couple of people to chat writing and I don't have enough of this in my life. Plus, it's just really lovely to hear people doing this that aren't 'big name' writers or celebrities or Creative Writing degree people. It's very accessible and inspiring and I love it.

4. The Creative Penn Podcast For Writers

Why this podcast?

I've listened to Joanna's podcast for a while now. She's been in the self-publishing industry longer than most and has a very experienced grasp on publishing books and courses this way. If you want tips on how to have multiple streams of income through writing, then this is the podcast for you. It's a great way to keep up-to-date on the latest news from the publishing world and hear interviews with other writers on all kinds of topics related to writing. If you want book news, great guests and lots of practical tips - this is the place to go. Plus, she's also in England like I am.

5. Script Apart with Al Horner

Why this podcast?

This podcast is more for screenwriting but I think there's so much I can take from it for fiction writing too. Each episode is looking at the first-draft secrets behind famous movies. Al chats to screenwriters to find out about how/why/when they wrote these screenplays and what worked and what didn't. It's a fascinating insight into an area of films we don't always hear about - the writing.
