The best podcasts for Worldbuilding in Fiction

Who am I?

I am the creator of the No Return audio drama and a huge fan of audio fiction which builds complex and interesting worlds through its story telling. I’ve been chatting with other creators and the founder of Goodpods about ways to improve discoverability for audio fiction. Lists seem like a great way to go about it so here I go!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I am just a big world building nerd and my show is one which tries to make its setting as much a part of the story as the characters. Whilst I am honestly jealous of the skills of the other shows I am recommending here, I think I do a good job of immersing the listener in the place and time of our setting 😉

What is my podcast playlist about?

Immersive audio fiction which draws you into its setting and it’s rich lore! Stories in which the setting itself features prominently or which cannot escape your intrigue and attention.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Eeler's Choice

Why this podcast?

The world Lou and Daisy have created is exceptional and it’s revealed layer by layer through interesting interactions, music and song without being intrusive or getting in the way of the story. One of my favourite shows!

"No respect for the sea, for the living things in it, for what's owed. They're fishing in the eel breeding grounds now, the fools."

Eeler's Choice is a maritime horror fantasy podcast set in Eskmouth, a small coastal town whose economy has lived and died on the hunting of the Great Eels for generations. As demand for product has increased, so have the catches... but even the generosity of the sea has its limits, and all debts must come due.

Releasing biweekly.

Imagine that the next messiah doesn’t come from religion, but from the tech world. Will his choices be more likely to save humanity—or destroy it? The Madness of Chartrulean is an award-winning fiction podcast that explores this concept using a unique blend of political drama, science fiction, fantasy, and Shakespearean tragedy. Chartrulean, the promised messiah, abandons piety for progress and becomes a shipbuilder instead. He ends a war and becomes the most powerful man on Arcas, ushering in a new technological era that rekindles hope for humanity while also deepening political divides. Chartrulean’s journey is deeply personal as he struggles with identity, leadership, and the weight of his choices. Rich in lore and political intrigue, The Madness of Chartrulean was made to resonate with fans of Game of Thrones, and classic sci-fi stories such as Dune and Foundation. It examines the moral complexities of progress, pushing listeners to think critically about power dynamics and the consequences of leadership. 4. The Wizard Scroll

Why this podcast?

Now I have to be upfront- this show does not take it self seriously on the world building front and, honestly, that’s what I love about it. It builds a wacky and silly world of swords, sorcerey, and sci-fi season after season- it’s great stuff if you are looking to visit a world without the heavy weight of severity!

THE WIZARD SCROLL is a sword & sorcery sci-fi narrative the likes of which will make yo' momma say 'Dang son/daughter/offspring, where'd you find this?' Tales of high fantasy, of trials and triumph, of quests both epic and mundane, as well as the occasional musical number. The realm of Yyrgsland is filled to the brim with all manner of folk, and boy let me tell you, the escapades that these crazy characters get themselves into would perhaps have made even the late and great Tolkien himself snicker in delight.

5. The Love Talker

Why this podcast?

Not for the feint hearted this one. It creates a world within a world- a world which is very much in our own but which intersects with dark powers beyond our control and which preys on those who live on the fringes of ‘civilisation’. The world building is subtle but beautiful and so artfully interlaced with character and story that it just has to make the list.
