The best podcasts for Immersive Sci-fi Audio Drama (Part One)

share icon

Share

Who am I?

The On and Off Theatre Workshop produces audio drama from absurdist pieces to re-imaginings of classics (Shakespeare and Chekhov, for example). As an audio drama producer, we are fascinated by the various ways that other producers are using the audio medium to tell engaging stories. The reason we chose sci-fi for our first list is because there are a lot of inventive producers doing really interested things in the genre.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The On and Off Theatre Workshop is about telling dramatic stories through audio. One of our episodes (BINDERS, written by Rachael Carnes) is a sci-fi adventure.

What is my podcast playlist about?

We wanted to find sci-fi series that told great stories. Here are five of our top ten. Part Two of this list will be out soon. Stay tuned...

2. We Fix Space Junk

Why this podcast?

There is so much to like about this audio drama. Like the title suggests, the show follows an odd triplet of a crew as they go on missions to fix everything from an old movie projector to a interstellar transmitter. Make sure to listen to the miniseries, Marilyn's Diary, which is a cool dive into one of the characters that appears late in Season 1.

'We Fix Space Junk' follows seasoned smuggler Kilner and reluctant fugitive Samantha as they travel the galaxy, dodging bullets and meeting strange and wonderful beings as they carry out odd jobs on the fringes of the law. A female-led sci-fi comedy sitcom set in the far future, in a high-tech, dystopian world, We Fix Space Junk draws on the sci-fi of the past, following in the footsteps of Harry Harrison and of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Equal parts love-letter to sci-fi and satire of the present-day, Space Junk is lovingly produced by Beth Crane and Hedley Knights of Battle Bird Productions. 3. Midnight Burger

Why this podcast?

An interdimensional, time-traveling diner, you say? We say, "Yes!" The diner appears somewhere new in the cosmos everyday, powered somehow from the kitchen? It's really fun and the cast is stellar (see what we did there?).

When Gloria took a waitressing job at a diner outside of Phoenix, she didn't realize she was now an employee of Midnight Burger, a time-traveling, dimension-spanning diner. Every day Midnight Burger appears somewhere new in the cosmos along with it's staff: a galactic drifter, a rogue theoretical physicist, a sentient old-timey radio, and some guy named Caspar. No one knows who built Midnight Burger or how it works, but when it appears there's always someone around who could really use a cup of coffee. At the nexus of all things, there is a diner. We open at 6.

4. The Pasithea Powder

Why this podcast?

The fascinating thing about this audio drama is that it's initially told in a series of voicemail messages. A twenty-first century epistolary, perhaps? We meet Cpt. Sophie Green and Dr. Jane Gonzales, estranged friends, after an interplanetary war has torn everything apart. The Pasithea Powder was a weapon that was used to basically end the conflict and has since been outlawed.

The Pasithea Powder is a monthly audio drama from Bad Wine Productions. On a faraway world, Captain Sophie Green is recovering from a war that ripped her planet apart and left her personal relationships for dead. Among the many atrocities committed on both sides was the invention of Pasithea Powder, a drug with memory altering properties. Thankfully, the drug has been eradicated and only a handful of scientists—now political prisoners—know how to recreate it. When Sophie sees one of those scientists walking free, she has no choice but to turn to an estranged friend for help.

5. Storm Runner - The Ezz Bennil Files

Why this podcast?

We wanted to give some love to a brand new sci-fi show and Storm Runner has only two episodes out (as of this writing)! The show follows Ezz Bennil and her ship's AI, Boat. In the first episode, which features a savage cliff hanger, Ezz and Boat are working to retrieve valuable crystals from a storm world (hence the name) when something emerges that could threaten the known universe. With excellent acting and production design, this show has us anxiously waiting for each new episode. Did we mention the cliff hanger in the first episode? Phew!

But a chance encounter with a deadly new threat forces Ezz and Boat to embark on an epic journey across the stars in an effort to save the world. Er, worlds. Plural. All of them.
