The best podcasts for The War in Ukraine

Who am I?

An independent author and a co-creator of Ukraine Peace Talks show which brings together two Russian speaking persons with opposing views on the war in Ukraine. I have been studying wartime podcasts for more than 14 months now. That is the most important topic for my daily media consumption.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Recently I completed listening to a limited podcast series on how the war in Ukraine transformed the lives of Russians opposing the war, and the whole picture finally emerged. I am ready to share now what podcasts report on the Russian — Ukrainian war.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Ukrainecast

Why this podcast?

An obvious choice for me, as I am listening to quite a lot of BBC podcasts. A professional journalistic endeavour to cover all corners of Russia’s invasion since February 2022. They even interviewed me as, following in the footsteps of Adrian Mole, I wrote to the BBC to explain on my social experiment called Ukraine Peace Talks. The only issue I would take with this programme is that it is rarely published. Started as daily, it then switched to three times a week, and now it has only two episodes per week. Notable names: Victoria Derbyshire, Vitaly Shevchenko.

The BBC’s only English language programme entirely dedicated to the war in Ukraine and its fallout, Ukrainecast, is your go-to podcast which investigates the biggest issues around the conflict. Could Putin push the nuclear button? How could Donald Trump end the war in 24 hours? What is the price for peace?

The podcast is hosted by Newsnight presenter Victoria Derbyshire and BBC Monitoring’s Vitaly Shevchenko.

Ukrainecast covers the most important topics around the conflict and speaks to the real people who’ve lived through several years of war. It also brings you agenda-setting interviews with special guests each week such as UK foreign secretary David Cameron, former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and pre-eminent Russia expert Fiona Hill.

You can now listen to Ukrainecast on a smart speaker. If you want to listen, just say "Ask BBC Sounds to play Ukrainecast”. It works on most smart speakers.

If you want to be notified every time we publish a new episode, please subscribe to us on BBC Sounds by hitting the subscribe button on the app.

If you enjoy Ukrainecast (and if you’re reading this then you hopefully do), then we think that you will enjoy some of our other pods too. See links below:

2. Ukraine: The Latest

Why this podcast?

The greatest of them all, because it arguably has the biggest audience and it is still published daily. A comprehensive one-hour or less review of what is happening on Ukraine’s front lines with military, humanitarian and diplomatic aspects all nicely covered. My issue with this programme is that it is somewhat skewed to the Ukrainian point of view, disregarding the Russian one, understandably so though. But I believe we can compensate through other podcasts. And sometimes they do have very strange guests out of nowhere without a context. Notable names: David Knowles, Dominic Nicholls, Francis Dearnley, Nataliya Vasilieva.
