The best podcasts for talking TTRPGS!

Share

Who am I?

Grant is the titular game master for "Game Master Monday", a podcast that plays a different one shot in a different system with a different cast every episode! Grant is an award-winning writer, actor, and director who loves all things TTRPGs and performance. On our show, we play A LOT of TTRPGs so naturally I have to be constantly educating myself on how to be a better GM, a better player, and keep my hand on the pulse of what's happening in the TTRPG scene. I'm an expert in this feel cause I HAVE to be to be the best host possible!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Game Master Monday is the short story collection of the TTRPG space. Game Master Monday plays a new one-shot every episode that features a different (usually indie) system and a rotating cast of talented performers and actual play veterans. The goal of the show is to showcase how any system can be used to tell a funny, gripping, and wholly original story. If you're not into long-form shows and just want self-contained quick bites to get an idea for how to play a game you've been curious about or just want a good old-fashioned "guffaw" in your life, check us out!

What is my podcast playlist about?

This is a playlist for those who are just DYING to talk about TTRPGs. Who want to hear OTHER people talk about TTRPGs. Who want tips on how to be a great game master. Who want to hear from masters of the craft share their advice and stories. For people who love charismatic hosts and high-quality interviews.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Tabletopped

Why this podcast?

Tabletopped's host, Nick Perron, is one of the best in the biz baby. There's no limit to what they'll discuss. Do you want the low down on a new TTRPG? Nick's got it. Do you want a fun and engaging interview with game makers? Nick's got it. Do you want to hear a shockingly well-thought-out breakdown of how you could turn Captain America: Civil War into a full-scale RPG with some of the best players of DND in the world? You better BELIEVE Nick's got that! Tabletopped has become one of my go-to shows for great breakdowns and a wide range of topics.

2. The RPG Goblin

Why this podcast?

The RPG Goblin truly lives up to its name. Host Willow hordes loads of RPGs and invites some of those games' most outstanding players to discuss them on the show. And when I say discuss them, I mean dissect them. You wanna chat about Pathfinder for 2 hours? Of course you do, who doesn't, Willow has that hot and ready for you. Each episode is a treat, exploring what makes different systems fun, how to find new and exciting things to do in those systems, and Willow has an effortless charm that really brings out the best in her guests.

3. DoubleDM

Why this podcast?

DoubleDM should be your new Bible (or equivalent holy book, not here to judge) if you're looking to really expand your horizons as a Dungeon or Game Master. The hosts are master craftsmen and have graciously stepped from their seats on Mount Olympus (or equivalent god-bearing mountain, not here to judge) to share their knowledge with us. This is a podcast for DMs BY DMs with a wealth of knowledge on how to make your game better. True story; I notoriously SUCK at combat and hate running it, but this show had a *chefs kiss* marvelous episode on how to keep it exciting without getting bogged down by mechanics and hoo boy did that help.

4. How Not to Dungeon Master

Why this podcast?

HN2DM should be in your orbit already and if it isn't holy smokes you gotta get it in there. This is THE DND interview show. A rotating door of some of the best DMs in the business, industry members, game designers, teachers, podcast hosts, I could go on. And this show is able to land these fantastic interviewees because showrunner Derrick is a genuine talent. Incredible voice, incredible questions, engaging conversations, Derrick might just be a genius and should probably be hosting something on NPR. The show is about to kick off its 4th season, so now is the PERFECT time to get into it!

5. The DM‘s Book Club

Why this podcast?

Sometimes it's all in the title. Hosts Fiona and Hamilton read various DND books and report on how you could start utilizing them in your home games. It's a great way to bite into the quite frankly mountains of content that both the company at large puts out as well as talented indie designers. If that weren't enough for you, they also graciously give you full episodes with helpful tips to make your game better, host fun interviews, give travelogs, the works! It literally feels like joining a book club except nobody is gonna give you weird looks if you didn't finish the book for that week. So, really it's BETTER than a book club.
