The best podcasts for Pop Culture Nostalgia if you're an 80s (or late 70s) baby/ 90s kid-teen

Share

Who am I?

Growing up in the 80s&90s there's a specific flavor of pop culture that is likely totally bodacious, and makes my adult-y heart happy to revisit. I don't always listen to pop culture podcasts but these are the ones I do listen to! The nostalgia brings about the fondest, usually, memories. I remember watching each scene as the hosts talk about them, taking me back to a time where generally I didn't have bills to pay, so it was a better time 😅 This is the pop culture from my youth through early 20s generally speaking, and makes for an entertaining escape from the current day reality.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I cohost Witches Talking Tarot (and other things...) which is a podcast about all things occult. The pop culture I absorbed growing up has helped shaped my views for life, and helped spurr my interest in the occult subjects which brought me to my path. We often talk about the pop culture that relates to our subject on the show, and my go to is usually 90s related content, so there is definitely a connection.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These are the movies and shows that shaped me as I grew, and continue to do so. The nostalgia that these podcasters evoke is a delightful dose of serotonin anytime I want some. These shows are comforting in the same way watching Futurama for the hundred-thousandth time is comforting. But they are a new and entertaining way of experiencing that comfort. iykyk so go listen, if you don't go listen.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Doom Generation

Why this podcast?

Ah, Nicole and Tessa covering the movies, and some of the shows, that doomed an entire generation. Doomed us to what? Well, that entirely depends on the flick, doesn't it? Every episode is a walk down memory lane with hilarious commentary and an awesome comraderie between the hosts. Truly a great movie podcast, and the show that caused me to give pop culture pods a chance.

2. The Rewatch Recap

Why this podcast?

Dustin does nostalgia could be the title of the show. I feel like I'm watching TV with my friend while he covers each episode. The commentary is witty and thought provoking, and he and his guest host discuss how well these things held up to the test of time. From full seasons, to tv movies, to specials like SNICK, I'm always excited to hear the latest episode! And, I'm on the Patreon for those awesome extras, as if you enjoy listening, you should be too.

Join host Dustin (Dustin Can Read & Watch podcast) and a special guest host every Monday as they recap a single season of a random television series, their favorite episodes of a show or a classic TV Movie.

The catch: they've already seen these before! Will the show still hold up? Will there inevitably be hilarious insights into what they used to watch?

Tune in every Monday to find out!

3. Death By DVD

Why this podcast?

Horror is my thing. Some weird is my thing. Obscure can be my thing. And Death By DVD truly lives up to its "advertisement" by watching it all so I don't have to. Keeping my eye holes and ear holes safe, until I choose to venture into the realms they introduce me to. And sometimes it's not an introduction, it's pure nostalgia listening to discussion around a much loved film. I love the depth at which Harry-Scott views and discusses the films discussed. Film making truly is an art, and that is how this host brings these films to you- artistically. From an artistic perspective. Not banaly missing the point of the art by the flash of cgi and current Era special effects. I truly appreciate that, so go listen and hopefully you will too.

Death By DVD: When watching is never enough. We here at Death By DVD sit painfully through hours and hours of movies so you, the public, can make an informed decision of what you put in your ear holes and eye holes. Some of these films are good, some bad, and some even unmentionable; but ALL have one thing in common : Watching all of these movies will one day melt our brains into a sloppy wet mush. No need to thank us, we were already methodically destroying ourselves with cinema. At least this way there is a permanent record of our demise. As the midnight hour approaches, the smoke sets heavy, and the booze begins to flow like blood; tune in and drop through hell with your host Harry Scott Sullivan featuring horror artist I.Alexander Nash as we take you on a journey through the worlds of horror, gore, cult, strange, slashers, psychotronic, trash, twisted, gornography, weird, drive-in, cheesy, lost, rare, and frightening films. Join us and listen as lives collapse upon themselves

4. I Hate It, Let’s Watch It

Why this podcast?

I love listening to Dawn and Lisa dissect... terrible... painful... awful... beloved movies. That's probably the best way to say it. They aren't always nostalgic, as they cover a wide span of both current films and much older ones, but they ARE ALWAYS entertaining! You'll love to hate what they're watching right along with them!

5. Playlist Wars

Why this podcast?

I absolutely love music, but I have only listened to a handful of podcasts about music, and this one by far is my favorite to continue listening to. I love listening to them discuss the playlist, the song usually playing in my head once it's brought up. I love the nostalgia this show brings from start to finish. And I love what I learn about the music as they discuss it.

One topic. Three playlists. YOU decide who’s best! Playlist Wars offers a fresh take on music commentary, pitting one mainstream music fan (co-host Alex Gomez) against one full-blown music fanatic (co-host Brian Colburn) along with one special guest. Every episode is focused on an artist, band or theme, with each person creating an individual 10-song playlist that they feel best represents the topic. Listeners then vote to decide which panel member “got it right.” Let the battle begin! 👊🏼
