Who am I?

I began my love of film in high school, and it tied into my love of music. Over the years, I gradually started to think deeper about both, and that led me to writing about film. As I started to want to make my writing and musical compositions more prevalent, Sonic Cinema was born. I'm someone who loves digging deep into movies, whether it's an individual film, a series of films, a segment of film history or a particular filmmaker. This is what the Sonic Cinema Podcast does, and a lot of the podcasts I've sought out about movies do this in fascinating ways.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Sonic Cinema Podcast is about exploring film from a variety of perspectives, whether it's a film festival, the Oscars, a particular filmmaker or genre, or a film in particular. I also like learning about people through the films we discuss, and what inspires them about it. That's why I love these podcasts.

What is my podcast playlist about?

The podcasts I love most listening to when it comes to deep analysis of film. These podcasters have come up with great hooks through which to look at cinema, and I love them all.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Binge Movies: Rankings and Reviews

Why this podcast?

Binge Movies does not always look at films in a particularly logical way, but there's always a purpose for why Jason puts films together. Sometimes, the podcast looks at films with a specific topic in mind, but others, it's about exploring some films that might be forgotten. Nobody is looking at films quite like Binge Movies does.

2. Franchise Detours

Why this podcast?

Robert has two great shows, between this and Close Watch, but I think Franchise Detours might be my favorite, because hearing each episode go through one piece of a franchise, and then seeing how each guest brings their own perspective to the movie, and the series, and it's riveting.

At Franchise Detours, we believe no movie series travels in a straight line. And through both standalone episodes or ongoing "mega-series," we aim -- one movie franchise at a time -- to explore the wild paths they tread through cinematic history.

3. NostalgiaCast

Why this podcast?

When you bring a movie to NostalgiaCast, you should be sure to have a personal connection with it. Each episode, we get a deep dive into a film that looks at what the film was like at the time it came out vs. how the hosts and guests look at it now. It's a great experience.

4. The Movie Loot

Why this podcast?

Carlo wants to look at cinema history with each episode. Sometimes, the impetus can be from something as simple as a first letter. Other times, it can be a time period he wants to watch. And other times, it's fixing a blind spot. Each episode is its own adventure, and it's a wonderful treat to hear him go through his month of moviewatching.

5. Piecing It Together Podcast

Why this podcast?

David wants his guests to dissect films based on the pop culture they took in to the modern film. Some of the puzzle pieces you hear guests bring up may be fairly predictable, but others might surprise you. The combination of those two ideas is what makes this podcast a great one.

A podcast about movies and the movies that inspired them. A good movie is the result of a large number of people both in front of and behind the camera combining to create a piece of art... But what about the movies that came before that inspired those filmmakers to make the movie? On Piecing It Together we figure out what the clear (and not so clear) influences were that make up the movies we love.
