Who am I?

Hi! I'm Anna, and I host Teen People, a podcast where I track down real people who were in TEEN PEOPLE magazine as teens and young adults. I'm a British-Canadian librarian and visual artist in Canada. Like a good librarian, I also love cats and gardening. I've been a podcaster for three years, and I've discovered that I really like working with first-person narrative audio. My work is "serious cultural anthropology" (in the words of one guest). As a librarian, I'm obviously interested in history, so it helps that the '90s and 2000s-era cultural histories are big right now!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast, Teen People, features people who were in TEEN PEOPLE magazine as teens and young adults. TEEN PEOPLE was a spinoff of PEOPLE, and was published between 1998 and 2006. They featured real teens in every issue, and printed their full names, ages and locations; which makes them pretty Google-able today! I use my remaining collection of TEEN PEOPLEs to locate my guests, who share complex and fascinating stories about coming-of-age in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Where are TEEN PEOPLE's "real teens" now? Let's find out!

What is my podcast playlist about?

These podcasts (including my own) will remind you of the 90s and 2000s; when magazines were still a big deal, when we first started Being Online, and when we used to shop at the mall. Remember those days? Then you'll love these podcasts!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Celebrating TEEN PEOPLE magazine's 25th anniversary

Why this podcast?

I created this episode in 2023, to celebrate TEEN PEOPLE magazine's 25th anniversary. In the 2000s, content by and for "real people" took off. From Tavi Gevinson's Style Rookie, to reality TV, and Humans of New York, people were hungry for media in which they could see themselves. I believe that TEEN PEOPLE helped to popularize that trend with their own focus on real teens. This episode features clips from my first two seasons, including interviews with Caron Levis, Gennie Gorback, Robin Knudsen, Zena Burns, Dr. Ben Barry, and James Frankie Thomas. You can find their episodes in seasons one and two of Teen People!

I don’t think of my podcast as being about TEEN PEOPLE magazine: it’s about my guests, and why they were in TEEN PEOPLE, and what they’re up to now in their 30s and 40s. But January 2023 is the 25th anniversary of TEEN PEOPLE, so I thought I’d celebrate with an episode featuring a few of the guests I’ve interviewed since I started this podcast in the spring of 2020! TEEN PEOPLE was founded in 1998, and was published until 2006. While their bread and butter was celebrities, their heart and soul was “real teen content". Where are these "real teens" now? That's the premise of this podcast. (If you love this idea as much as I do, leave a rating or review!) In the 2000s, content by and for "real people" took off. From Tavi Gevinson's Style Rookie, to reality TV, and Humans of New York, people were hungry for media in which they could see themselves. TEEN PEOPLE helped popularize that trend with their own focus on real teens. (Remember: this was before social media made it possible to reach a global audience with the tap of a button!) This episode features clips from my first two seasons, including interviews with Caron Levis, Gennie Gorback, Robin Knudsen, Zena Burns, Dr. Ben Barry, and James Frankie Thomas. You can find their episodes in seasons one and two of Teen People! Notes: Intro music: RomanBelov on Pixabay Outro music (edited for length): Fog Lake, 'Roswell'. Teen People is recorded in Kingston/Katarokwi, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat.

3. Listen To Sassy: Life In The 90s

Why this podcast?

For elder Millennials and Gen Xers, this podcast digs into old issues of SASSY magazine. SASSY predated TEEN PEOPLE, but similarly tried to do something a little different than their peers in the teen magazine genre. And, like TEEN PEOPLE, some of today's A-listers were featured in SASSY at the very beginning of their careers.
