Who am I?

We are husband and wife, both born in 1972, living in Yorkshire, England who have been together since the early 2000's. We have two kids and a shared passion for music. We enjoy some similarities in music taste, but both have artists we adore that the other isn't so keen on! We'd lived together for a couple of years when we got married and so asked for money towards a classic dometop jukebox for our wedding present. It's been a wonderful accompanyment to our lives and been a real focal point for some wonderful parties and get-togethers throughout the years. We've had gigs in our house and love the fact that our passion for music has rubbed off onto our teenage children. We started our podcast in 2021 with the aim of learning something new and enjoying the process of putting together episodes and sharing our experiences and opinions on music in general, but specifically about records that we own. We are two seasons in, with season one concentrating on our vinyl collections, season two our CD collections. There have been albums from the 60's - 2010's but the main decades covered have been the 80's and 90's. We like to find some nuggets of info that you may not know about, but don't take things too seriously and are thoroughly enjoying the podcast experieince. It's particularly rewarding when we get feedback from listeners and will reply to every comment received. The name 'Memorabilia podcast' is a nod to the Soft Cell single 'Memorabilia', with Kate being a Marc Almond devotee. If you are kind enough to lend your ears to an episode, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Enjoy! Our shared passion for live and recorded music was the catalyst for our podcast. The feelings it evokes and the experience of enjoying something so visceral and magical is a pastime we embrace as often as we can. Kate sings in a local drama group that put on musicals every year, and Rick is a self taught guitarist who likes to annoy the neighbours every now and then with his strumming and bedroom vocals. However, watching professional musicians performing is really where it's at for us. We have been to different gigs all over the country, although these days, the smaller intimate venues are more appealing than big arenas and festivals. Rick is the one that does the research about each of the albums, Kate adding in her own thoughts, feelings and differing perspectives, plus she likes to poke fun at her husband's geeky obsessive nature at every opportunity she gets!

What is my podcast playlist about?

It's all about the podcasts that focus on talking about great music - could be specific genres, artists, records, or periods of time. We don't care. If we find them entertaining and interesting, then we'll pretty much listen to everything that's released. We greatly admire all the hosts who generally have far more connections and knowledge in the music industry, and find their insights and stories fascinating. Hats off to every single one of them. On average, for our own Memorabilia Podcast we've managed to put out one episode per month, but releases are sporadic to fit in with our busy lives and so we tend to create long episodes of around 90 mins, with a couple of episodes featuring very special guests, pushing out to two hours. The guests to date have been former guitarist with Indie legends 'The Loft' Andy Strickland, talking about The Caretaker Race's 1990 beauty of an album, 'Hangover Square', and current Leveller and former Wonderstuff guitarist Dan Donnelly, running us through his 2011 cracking solo album 'Country & Northern'. As well as the fantastic records that we cover from the likes of The Cure, Madness, Ben Folds Five, Soft Cell, Blondie, Hue & Cry, Blur, The The, Marc Almond, R.E.M., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and The Stone Roses, we talk about what was going on in the UK at the time of each album release. Single and album charts, movie box office, television, news and what was happening in our own lives are all the subject of much discussion and often hilarity. Each featured album gets a mark out of 10 from us both, giving an aggregate score out of 20, and we provide periodic updates on the Memorabilia score charts for the featured albums.

Season 2 is here!! Husband and wife, Rick and Kate, are dedicating each episode to an album from their CD collections, chatting about the bands, songs, what the records mean to us, and what was happening around release time in the news, charts, movies, TV, and our own lives. The podcast title is a nod to the track ‘Memorabilia’ by Soft Cell, with Kate being a big Marc Almond fan. Series one focused on our vinyl albums, mainly from the 70's and 80's; season 2 will be 90's onwards, covering britpop, indie, pop, grunge, and everything in-between, with a new 'Top 3's' section.
