The best podcasts for Learning All About Heavy Metal!

Who am I?

Eric is a college music professor and a lifelong metalhead with a passion for both metal music and metal podcasts. John is a classical conductor with absolutely no prior background in heavy metal. There are very few things that give me (Eric) as much joy as exploring the history and repertoire of heavy metal music. My academic training as a musical scholar and my experience teaching music theory and history in the classroom have provided me with a particularly apt set of skills with which to dig ever deeper into this fascinating genre, and to convey that information with great clarity and a whole lot of fun. John, of course, doesn't know anything about anything, and we love him for it!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Heavy Metal 101 is your favorite podcast, wherein Eric, an expert, and John, a novice, explore, discuss, and argue about the history of heavy metal music. New episodes are available on the 3rd Monday of each month!

What is my podcast playlist about?

I (Eric) always love to learn more about heavy metal. These are a few of my favorite podcasts that help me to do this very thing! John, meanwhile, can use all the help he can get...

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Phil's Breakfast Metal

Why this podcast?

Heavy metal may not be a particularly tranquil, relaxing musical genre, but learning about heavy metal certainly can be. Phil is always exploring esoteric, fascinating, heavy music in just about the most pleasant manner possible. Always an enjoyable, educational listen!

2. Heavy Metal Philosophy

Why this podcast?

I, Eric, am old and busy. Keeping up to date with the latest and greatest metal music, bands, ideas, etc. isn't always easy. This weekly podcast is brief, to the point, insightful, and an excellent way to keep one's thumb on the pulse.

3. REQUIEM METAL PODCAST

Why this podcast?

Sometimes I want quick and breezy, but there are also times when I want a 20 hour deep dive into the early career and discography of Venom. Requiem is a great place for the latter. It has been around forever, and there is a deep catalogue of really rich, in-depth topic explorations.

4. History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff

Why this podcast?

Author Popoff is the patron saint for musicologist metalheads of a certain age. This particular podcast often goes fairly far afield from strictly heavy metal, but subjects are generally quirky and very interesting, and there is much to learn here.

History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff is the show that aims to make grand and often oddball hard rock and heavy metal points through a narrative built upon the tiny idea of a quintet of songs. Buttressed with illustrative clips, Martin argues quickly and succinctly why these songs - and the specific sections of these tracks - support his mad professor premise, from the wobbly invention of an “American” heavy metal, to the influence of Led Zeppelin in hair metal or to more succinct topics like tapping and twin leads. The songs serve as bricks, but Martin slathers plenty of mortar. At the end, hopefully he has a sturdy house in which this week’s theory can reside unbothered by the elements. At approximately 7000, Martin has had published in books more record reviews than anybody in the history of music writing across all genres. Additionally, Martin has penned approximately 85 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock and record collecting. Proud part of Pantheon - the podcast network for music lovers.
