The best podcasts for how art and creativity help us flourish.

Who am I?

I am a podcaster, documentary filmmaker, and instructor. The podcast I produce and host is called Art Heals All Wounds. The role of art as a necessary part of well-being for us as individuals, communities, and societies is something that I'm passionate about. Art and creative practices have been a way through so many negative experiences. While going through a decidedly NOT amicable divorce where I experienced out of control rage from my departing husband, I survived by playing the piano. For hours. But really I did more than survive, I actually felt great after those long sessions of play. I should say that I'm not a very good piano player, which didn't seem to matter at all. I had the epiphany that art didn't just help me to cope, it helped me to heal. And that it was something that anyone could do when they needed it. I didn't have to be a good piano player to reap the benefits of regular sessions of creativity. I thought about the artists I knew who were doing work that not only healed themselves, but transformed the participants who made that art with them, or the people who later engaged with that art. I realized that I knew a fair number of artists who were doing significant work. I created Art Heals All Wounds to tell their stories, not realizing that hearing these stories and sharing them was going to become a significant tool in my own ability to flourish.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The premise of my podcast is that if we want to creative beneficial change in the world, art is going to be fundamental to that. I highlight artists who are doing work for public engagement that has profound effects on those who engage with it. What I hope the take away of the show is, though, that art is for everyone. Not just as a frivolous side activity, but something that is necessary for all of us to flourish. I also have a really expansive idea of what art is. I believe that if someone practices an activity that engages them creatively, they are practicing art. The great thing is, all of these ideas are not my original thoughts or unique to my experience. There is a world of people who also believe this.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast playlist is about how art and creativity can help us flourish. There are so many great podcasts out there that exemplify this. Not every podcast on my list is strictly about art, but they all at the very least incorporate storytelling, one of the most profound creative practices that exist, as a way to heal.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Wild Precious Life

Why this podcast?

In Wild Precious Life, host Annmarie Kelly interviews writers and other creative thinkers about their work. She really digs in deep, in a way that flows like effortless conversation. 2. Art Heals All Wounds

Why this podcast?

This is my own podcast and I really love the guests and their range of work. I look for guests who are engaging with issues that keep me up at night--environmental, social, and racial justice, gender equity, ways to build community and bridge divisions. My guests have incredible vision on how to use creative means to communicate and come together over thorny questions. I feel like I go on a journey with each person's story and come through the other side completely transformed. I'm especially recommending Season 4.

3. Introducing: The Reframeables Podcast

Why this podcast?

I love the quest that hosts Natalie and Rebecca Davey take on this podcast. How can we reframe issues, large and small, through talking them through? As sisters, they bounce through conversations about the places they are stuck, sometimes just the two of them and sometimes with a guest. What I love about this show is how Natalie and Rebecca exemplify how the art of conversation has the power to enlarge your perspective and 'reframe' how you think about something.

Dear Reframeables,
Welcome to our podcast. We are Nat and Bec, two very different sisters who like to use art and conversations to reframe more than ourselves — one might say we practice socially conscious self-help. Sometimes we do it through conversations with the two of us, sometimes we bring in artists, thinkers and creators to help us along. Always we like to leave you with some new reframeable to chew as we work through life’s big and small stuff together.
Love,
Nat and Bec

4. The Art Career

Why this podcast?

I really love the take on art that host Emily McElwreath has as the premise of her show. Should the artworld be an exclusive place beyond the grasp of most people? No! Her conversations with artists are full of surprises around how they got started, what motivates and inspires them, and, quite often, how their work is a way to heal, maybe with themselves at first, but then rippling out to those who engage with it.
