The best podcasts for Edutainment

Who am I?

I am a podcast producer, writer, musician and co-host. I have a passion for parody and comedy, but I also love things in a "non-boring" way. I always have a hard time with fiction podcasts. Although my favorite movies are fiction, there's just something about consuming entertainment through this intimate medium that I need some real facts and information. There's so much interesting and strange in the world that I want to learn about. However, I also don't want a monotone podcast that gives a ton of facts, like reading a school text book. When not consuming straight-up comedy podcasts, I'm always listening to informative/educational podcasts WITH comedy and high entertainment value. I feel that I'm more able to retain the knowledge when a good host is able to give personal examples of how the subject relates to me, or just hear an interesting viewpoint different than mine.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is a comedy variety show that is split into three categories. 1. Personal dilemmas 2. Edutainment/facts 3. Story. Our 2nd segment is designed to give a bit of what my favorite podcasts give. We make learning something fun, funny and interesting. Whether it be presented as a fast fact, a 2 Truths and a Lie game, trivia question or Top 5, we are dedicated to leave you with something to make you more interesting in conversation. Our 3rd segment (stories) is what we call our "movie versions" of dumb criminal stories. Leaning more into the comedy side of things, we take petty crime stories and present them in a similar fashion to how Hollywood takes a true story and makes it more exciting for film. Our comedic goal is to take true silly, bizarre petty crime stories and give them the same overly-dramatic spin that Hollywood or a Dateline-esque crime documentary would put towards a heavy subject. This gives me a chance to use all of my audio skills, parody all of my favorite movie tropes and also leave people learning all the information about a dumb crime. The end of every story breaks down what's true in our sensationalized version, leaving people feeling like part of the creative process and also knowing all of the facts, so they aren't spreading misinformation after. This show is a dense, wild amalgamation of all my favorite kinds of entertainment. It fulfills me creatively and every episode is written by my cohost and I, with all sound design done by me. Each story is a handcrafted audio experience like you've never heard before.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast Playlist is for the people who love learning new things, but also have high standards for quality in entertainment and comedy. I spent 13 years in school and it took me well into my adult years to realize learning can be fun. These podcasts are for the people wanting to expand their mind and have fun doing it!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Behind the Bastards

Why this podcast?

Behind the Bastards tells you everything you didn't know about the world's worst people. Robert does a great job diving deep into different grifters in history that have shaped the way we live today; from the companies that purposely still make diabetes medication too expensive, to praised business leaders' lesser known shady practices. I always enjoy learning more about the world through Robert's slightly-scripted, conversational format.

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

2. 10ish Podcast

Why this podcast?

Nick and his rogues gallery of sidekick hosts have fun presenting a random top 10 list, guessing what's on them and then giving facts about each one. Nick's fun sense of humor, bringing butts and cats into everything, makes learning new facts an enjoyable time while making him feel like a close friend. I hardly ever travel and have no real connection to airports, but Nick's episode on Top 10 Airlines was entertaining and interesting all the way through. Any subject is worth a listen wheh 10ish is presenting it.

3. No Such Thing As A Fish

Why this podcast?

These facts are some of the most interesting facts I've ever heard. Each episode takes a fun round-table approach to all of the most interesting facts each member has learned over the past week. Each person adds little side-facts to the main facts, leaving you amazed at how many things you didn't know. And of course, each member of the crew is hilarious with their reactions to the fun information.

4. Well... That’s Interesting

Why this podcast?

Jill brings it! This is the only single-host podcast that I have on this list and that's because I don't always find a single speaker to be that funny. Generally, I prefer a conversational style so there can be disagreements and different points of view. However, WTI is in a league of its own, delivering great facts and funny responses. When Jill is behind the mic, I don't feel like a second person is missing at all. Get it, business goose!

Welcome to Well... That’s Interesting, a comedy sciencey podcast for weird people who like learning about weird sh*t, like can hair grow between your teeth or could we ever lose our moon? (Sadly, yes to both.) WTI tells the story behind the facts and, turns out, those stories are funny. Join Jill ChaCha every week as they take The Flock on a journalistic, storytelling adventure into new, bizarre, often unexpected findings. The tales are epic and the laughter is plentiful. -- WTI is a part of the Airwave Media podcast network! Visit AirwaveMedia.com to listen and subscribe to other incredible shows.
