The best podcasts for Christmas in Europe

share icon

Share

Who am I?

I'm a podcast producer and presenter based in Cologne, Germany working on shows for DW, the BBC and other outlets. Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday. The whole festive season warms my heart (or maybe that's just from the Glühwein at the Christmas markets). With so many different Christmas traditions across Europe, I thought it'd be fun to put together a list to get listeners into the yuletide mood, whether you're traveling to see family or finding a cozy moment by the fire.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I'm the senior producer of Don't Drink the Milk, a podcast that follows familiar things on their journeys through time and around the world – by force, by chance or by choice. We also had the joy of putting together an episode called 'Christmas: Piñatas & pavlovas', which was really a lot of fun exploring Christmas traditions around the world!

What is my podcast playlist about?

This list takes a look at different traditions and histories of this holiday in Europe. Some are funny, some are problematic, some need rethinking, and some might inspire you to adopt a new tradition.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Rough Translation

Why this podcast?

This Rough Translation episode grapples with a problematic figure in Dutch Christmas tradition and asks how we can rethink and replace traditions steeped in racism. Episode: So Long, Black Pete

Each week we trawl the continent of Europe for the most interesting stories to cover and the most fascinating people to interview. This semi-serious, semi-silly, Brexit-free show, from a reporter in Paris and an opera singer in Amsterdam, will make you seem clever to friends and make you feel like you've got two NEW friends in Katy and Dominic. You probably didn't realise you needed a European podcast in your life, but this will fill the gap that you didn't even know was there.

3. Passport

Why this podcast?

Careful when listening to this one, it might just make you spit out your hot chocolate with laughter. The episode 'Barcelona: The Magical Pooping Log of Xmas' explores the cheekiness of Catalan humor and this truly special tradition. Episode: Barcelona: The Magical Pooping Log of Xmas
