The best podcasts for Art Lovers

Who am I?

I have been teaching art for 16 years. When I was younger and earning my BFA, I was really focused on creating but as an adult I have been discovering so many great stories I never knew that just make art history far more odd and interesting than I ever realized. When we were kids, most of us loved art class. We would look at beautiful works of art, experiment with different tools and materials and watching projects take shape was like magic. Somehow as we got older, most of us lost the joy in art. It became a subject that was strange and confusing. Art museums are full of works could easily be mistaken for garbage (and some custodians have accidentally thrown away artworks lol). I started my podcasts trying to bring gather the stories that make art and art history fun and understandable for everyone.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These are podcasts that cut through the art world jargon that doesn’t make sense to anyone and share the odd and interesting stories that make learning about art more fun for everyone.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Who Arted: Weekly Art History for All Ages

Why this podcast?

This podcast takes an expansive view of art to capture a little something for everyone. Learn some of the fun facts that were probably left out of the boring lecture halls like did you know Michelangelo had exceptionally poor hygiene even by Renaissance standards? Learn about the librarian who stole artworks and replaced them with his own paintings only to discover that others had stolen his forgeries and replaced them with their own fakes. In addition to the standard paintings or sculptures, Who ARTed covers fashion, dance and new media like video games. It’s fun for the whole family.

Who Arted is art history and art education for everyone. While most art history podcasts focus on the traditional "fine art" we see in museums around the world, Who ARTed celebrates art in all of its forms and in terms anyone can understand. Each episode tells the story of a different artist and artwork including the traditional big names like Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol along with lesser-known artists working in such diverse media as video game design, dance, the culinary arts, and more. Who Arted is written and produced by an art teacher with the goal of creating a classroom resource that makes art history fun and accessible to everyone. Whether you are cramming for your AP Art History exam, trying to learn a few facts so you can sound smart at fashionable dinner parties, or just looking to hear something with a more positive tone, we’ve got you covered with episodes every Monday and Friday.

The Art of Crime is a history podcast about the unlikely collisions between true crime and the arts. We take painstaking research and craft it into compelling stories that teach you about society and culture.
Each new season covers a different theme. Season 3 is titled "Queen of Crime: Madame Tussaud and the Chamber of Horrors." Just in time for Women's History Month, this season chronicles the long and distinguished career of Madame Tussaud, one of the most celebrated show-women of her day, kicking off in pre-revolutionary France and wrapping up in Victorian London. At the same time, "Queen of Crime" tracks the evolution of the Chamber of Horrors, a special showroom in Tussaud's wax museum that exhibited macabre curiosities, including effigies of notorious murderers.
Season 2 is titled "Assassins." It profiles artists who have committed, attempted, or at least been implicated in an assassination. Also check out Season 1, "The Unusual Suspects: Artists Accused of Being Jack the Ripper."

5. Art Smart

Why this podcast?

Different people look at art in different ways. All of my artist friends tend to look at a piece first considering the material and how it is constructed. If you want to look at art like an artist and understand the elements or art, the principles of design or how different materials are made/used, check out Art Smart.

Art is for everyone, but sometimes, the way we talk about art doesn't make sense to anyone. Art Smart breaks through the confusing artspeak to help everyone understand and enjoy art a little bit more. Every episode is short and to the point giving you a quick overview of the topic in just a few minutes. In Season 1, Art Smart focused on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. The elements of art are the building blocks of art and the principles of design focus on how artists arrange those building blocks. Understanding the Elements and Principles can help you become a better creator whether you aspire to be the next Leonardo da Vinci, or you just want your family photos to look good on social media. For Season 2, Art Smart is focusing on different eras and movements in art. What is the difference between modern and post-modern? How were the Post-Impressionists and Impressionists similar and different? Learn all about these and other movements in season 2. Each episode will cover a movement or era in broad strokes, then give you five specific artists/works to look at for a better understanding.
