The best podcasts about tricksters and swindlers

Who am I?

I am an artist and podcaster who has a day job as a marketing professional. I'm passionate about creativity, generosity, and caring for my fellow human beings. I started listening to true crime podcasts when politics got too scary. I listen to a lot of wrongfully convicted and unsolved crime podcasts, but when they got too heavy, I discovered tricksters and swindlers.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is about local events, entertainment, and happenings. The content is hyper-local, but the banter and jokes are for everyone. It doesn't relate to my list, really, but people need balance, right?

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast playlist is all about people who aren't exactly who they say they are and got away with a whole heck of a lot of nonsense, and, in some cases, some pretty serious crimes. I need other people to listen to these podcasts so I have people to talk to about them because my friends are sick of hearing me go on and on about them all.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Sweet Bobby

Why this podcast?

I binged this series in about a couple of days and I still can't stop thinking about it. What the actual heck? So many questions.

2. S1201: The Stalker part 1

Why this podcast?

Wow, what a roller coaster this season of Pretend was. I'm still not over it. I'm not sure how the host navigated all of this insanity so expertly. As a bonus, Javier Leiva has one of the absolute best podcasting voices out there.

Couple terrorized by a sadistic cyber stalker for years

For more than three years, Claudia and David Rodriguez (not their real names) have been the targets of a sadistic cyber stalker. Despite their attempts to involve the police and stop the stalking, it has continued to this day. In fact, the couple has faced accusations from the very detectives assigned to their case. One detective suggests that Claudia may have a split personality and is causing the stalking herself.

3. Swindled

Why this podcast?

This may be the only single-host-telling-a-story podcast I really love. A Concerned Citizen is a gifted and witty storyteller who digs deep to tell multi-faceted stories. The orca episode particularly stuck with me, but the host's whole brand is just engaging and fabulous.

4. The Girlfriends: Our Lost Sister

Why this podcast?

Ok, this one gets a little darker because it covers domestic violence and abuse, and it's a bit of an intense ride, but the story of these women coming together to take this guy down is just amazing.

In Season 1, The Girlfriends told the story of how a group of incredible women came together to bring down one bad ex-boyfriend and seek justice for the murder of Gail Katz.

But there’s one part of that story that’s still a mystery.

During the investigation into Gail’s case, a torso washed up on Staten Island and was misidentified as Gail. Nobody knows her name or what happened to her after she was ruled out from the case.

In Season 2, the amateur ladies detective club are back with a new mission: to uncover the identity of this woman and finally find Our Lost Sister.

We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. But what happens when we can’t trust them? Dr. Death is the award-winning series hosted by Laura Beil, now in its fourth season: Bad Magic.

Need more Dr. Death? With Wondery+, you can listen to all episodes, unlock exclusive content, get early access to upcoming episodes, and enjoy an always ad-free experience. Start your free trial in the Wondery App or visit wondery.com/links/dr-death/ now.

When a charismatic young doctor announces revolutionary treatments for cancer and HIV, patients from around the world turn to him for their last chance. As medical experts praise Serhat Gumrukcu’s genius, the company he co-founded rockets in value to over half a billion dollars. But when a team of researchers makes a startling discovery, they begin to suspect the brilliant doctor is hiding a secret.

Season 3: Paolo is a smart and handsome surgeon, renowned for his ability to perform surgeries that transform his patients’ lives. When television producer Benita covers him for a story, he’ll transform her life too, but not in the ways she expects. As Benita crosses professional lines to be with him, she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets. And halfway around the world, four doctors at a prestigious medical institute make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything into question.

Season 2: If someone you love is diagnosed with cancer you want them to get the best treatment from the best doctors. In 2013, patients in Michigan thought Farid Fata was that doctor. Between his prestigious education, years of experience and pleasant bedside manner, Fata was everything you could want in a doctor. But he was not who he appeared to be. From Wondery, this is the story of hundreds of patients in Michigan, a doctor, and a poisonous secret.

Season 1: We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away. But soon his patients started to experience complications, and the system failed to protect them. Which begs the question: who - or what - is that system meant to protect? From Wondery, the network behind the hit podcast Dirty John, Dr. Death is a story about a charming surgeon, 33 patients and a spineless system.
