Who am I?

I am a historian and podcaster who loves working with creative teams and talented historians to make the past accessible to the present. I am a Historian and Senior Producer at R2 Studios, part of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. At R2 Studios, I produce, create, and host narrative history podcasts for general audiences. I am the executive producer of "The Green Tunnel Podcast" and "Your Most Obedient & Humble Servant," and I am the host and writer of "Worlds Turned Upside Down," a history of the American Revolution. Learn more about our work at www.r2studios.org. History is my profession and my passion. I'm a formerly trained historian in American history with a background in digital humanities, and my research explores Scotland and the American Revolution. I never imagined I would end up as a podcaster as well. Although I've been an avid podcast listener for a long time, I never got behind the mic until I worked at George Washington's Mount Vernon, where I became the host of the interview series "Conversations at the Washington Library." I went on to co-create and co-write the narrative documentary series "Intertwined: The Enslaved Community at George Washington's Mount Vernon" with my colleague, Jeanette Patrick. While I enjoyed working at Mount Vernon and running its Center for Digital History, my experience producing podcasts convinced me that I could have a bigger impact as a historian if making history podcasts was my full-time job. I was fortunate to join R2 Studios at George Mason University, where I now partner with professional historians and graduate students to make the best history podcasts we can for the public.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Worlds Turned Upside Down tells the story of the American Revolution as a transatlantic crisis and imperial civil war through the lives of people who experienced it. The revolutionary era upended their lives in ways they could have never imagined. The crisis that engulfed the Atlantic world in the late eighteenth century inspired British Americans, Indigenous nations, enslaved Africans and African Americans, Europeans, and other peoples to question their loyalties, challenge authority, seek freedom, and resist revolutionary change. This is my second major narrative podcast project and my first as the narrator. I hope the stories we tell will turn our audiences' worlds upside down as we offer them a new history of the American Revolution.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Listeners will find in this playlist captivating stories about the past told with empathy, humor, and wit. They will also get the chance to learn how historians know what we know about the past and the many and varied ways we write about moments of joy, sadness, loss, and triumph. It's a collection of history podcasts based on the latest historical research and featuring some of the best historians in the business.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Your Most Obedient & Humble Servant: A Women's History

Why this podcast?

Your Most Obedient & Humble Servant is a podcast about 18th and 19th century women and their letters who don't often get as much attention as they should. In each episode, host Kathryn Gehred and her guests discuss the private and largely unknown letters from women such as English aristocrat Jemima Grey, Martha Washington granddaughter Eleanor Parke Custis, American Loyalist Elizabeth Lichtenstein, and many more. Kathryn was very kind to have me on her show early in my podcasting career to talk about Scottish emigrant Flora MacDonald. I am happy to say that my studio recently has begun partnering with Kathryn to produce her show because we believe it is one of the best women's history podcasts out there.

Your Most Obedient & Humble Servant is a podcast that showcases 18th and early 19th-century women’s letters that don’t always make it into the history books. Join historian Kathryn Gehred and her guests as they explore the lives of women and the world around them through their letters.

3. Stories of Scotland

Why this podcast?

Stories of Scotland is one of my favorite shows. Hosted by Annie MacDonald and Jenny Johnstone, they offer a warm and often hilarious look at Scottish history and culture. Their episodes are based on literature, oral tradition, and archival research, and they allow me to "visit" Scotland more often than I am actually able to travel there. Slàinte mhath!

4. In Our Time

Why this podcast?

I regularly listen to In Our Time. It features host Melvyn Bragg and a group of experts discussing major topics in history, literature, philosophy, and science. For me, one of the most important things the series does well is that it trusts its audience to handle sometimes complex material. Yet, Bragg and his guests discuss their topics in such a way that it is accessible to the general listener.
