Today we chat to, Sally Carr MBE. A Lesbian woman, intersectional feminist, proud Romany Gypsy, tireless campaigner and advocate for LGBT+ young people for over 30 years.

From LGBT+ advocacy against a backdrop of Section 28 in the 80's, to saving and enhancing the lives of countless young people, Sally Carr MBE has dedicated her life to improving outcomes for LGBT+ young people. Born, bred and buttered in Greater Manchester, she has dedicated her life to bettering the lives of young people, particularly marginalised LGBT+ people and women. This remarkable individual escaped a hostile homophobic home life to flourish as a national leader in LGBT+ youth provision.

In 1996, she set up and supported the Peer Support Project, a charity for intensive support of LGBT+ young people, and in 2005 she co-founded The Proud Trust. Alongside her support of young people, Sally has also co-developed community initiatives and networks to support staff and influence policy. Her dedication to young people's rights and voices over a staggering career in youth work has been unrelenting.

Sally was awarded a MBE in 2012 for services supporting vulnerable and isolated LGBT+ young people across the UK. She is currently shortlisted for a Life Time Achievement Awards at the National Diversity Awards 2021 and nominated in the 2021 Inspirational Women Awards, and previously in the top ten for the British LGBT Awards 2020 Outstanding Contribution to LGBT+ life.

She is a Director at Pride Sports, Pride 365 Champion, Patron of The Pankhurst Trust, Role Model for The Traveller Movement, Ambassador for Manchester Met University and active member of Soroptimists International. She is a also non-executive board member at the National Youth Agency, an advisor to LGBT Consortium and sits on the LGBT Advisory Group for the Mayor of Greater Manchester (Andy Burnham) in her role as a Director at Pride Sports
