In this weekly show, Frank Magree and Jenny Valentish explore wellness claims. With the help of experts and enthusiasts, the pair road-test disciplines and experiences such as cuddle clubs, facilitated breath repatterning, tantra, motivational techniques, extreme weight cutting, saunas, fasting, colonics, and radical couples therapy, to see if they can extract practical benefits from the more out-there concepts. Now meet your hosts.Journalist Jenny Valentish considers herself to have a healthy sense of scepticism. She’s a former amateur bodybuilder and amateur Muay Thai fighter (a professional amateur, if you will), with a tendency to treat her body mean to keep it keen. Her book Everything Harder Than Everyone Else delves into what drives athletes who push their bodies to extremes, while her Walkley-nominated memoir Woman of Substances examines a bigger picture about addictive behaviour and gender, crunching 300 studies and interviewing 30 experts in the process. She has the perfect foil in actor Frank Magree, a cold water therapy and breathwork devotee, keen to go deeper into new age and anti-ageing activities. The tennis player in him is fascinated by peptides and recovery hacks. The performer in him harbours a not-so-secret desire to become more guru-like. Frank is an award-winning filmmaker 12 times over and as an actor specialising in bad dudes has been murdered 10 times by his estimation. Hopefully his obsession with longevity books and biohackers will preserve him as a fighting-fit fella in real life. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Troubled Waters is a 10-part ground-breaking podcast exploring the untold story of Louisa Ioannidis' tragic and mysterious death in 2011. Louisa Ioannidis was only 24. Beautiful, courageous, and vulnerable, yet her untimely death barely received a two-line report in a small local newspaper. Her body was discovered by passers-by in a local creek, clad in a pink dressing gown. Despite being a strong swimmer, police quickly determined there were no suspicious circumstances. Yet no one has been able to explain how or why she came to enter the creek.Louisa’s brother Tass has always doubted the findings and is desperate for answers.Over a decade after Louisa’s death, Private Investigator Julia Robson embarks on a fresh investigation and explores the full story of Louisa’s short life and the events leading up to her tragic passing. Together with Producer Clare McGrath, they uncover a gripping narrative full of intrigue. From an international kidnapping, a daring escape and a family’s desperate bid to stay together, it all unravels into a downward spiral exacerbated by a toxic relationship, all the while revealing flaws in a family violence support system that desperately needs fixing. This podcast is only temporary

Latest episode 7 months ago

Belfast-born Melbourne-based songwriter and producer Andy White has a new podcast series based around the writing and recording of 'AT', the album he released with Tim Finn earlier this year. As in the first series, when he went track by track with latest solo album ‘This garden is only temporary’, Andy looks at a song a week to show how layers of lyrics and music work together, ideas appear, and surprises are welcomed. In both series, Andy plays excerpts from the master tapes and discusses process, influences and inspirations. Each episode ends with a different version of the song from the one you'll find on the released recording. If the underlying theme of Series 1 was "How to make an album", Series 2 is "How to co-write an album". There are even more ways to write songs or record when two people are involved. And if you are old friends and bandmates, you don't need to be in the same room together."If you want to express something but don't know how to express it—tell the truth. This is powerful."

Welcome to the Dancethropology podcast! Join us as we delve deep into the realms of dance culture. From dance music thru to the reasons why we dance, and the importance of dance across many cultures and how it effects us. Each season will be made up of 5 one on one long-form discussions, between selected authorities and myself. Tracing a chronological time-line, from the beginnings of that culture up until present day. I hope you’ll enjoy hearing from some often un-heard voices. For the debut season of Dancethropology, we will be taking an in-depth look at the minds behind some of Melbourne’s now extinct, iconic underground night spots. In some ways they are all akin to places of worship in their own right. These essential tombs of culture have faced an interesting change with the advent of technology. The venues left standing, face a whole new raft of challenges especially now with the current state of social distancing. Nightclubs have long been cultural & creative incubators, spaces free of judgement and filled with every type of person imaginable. A place where weirdness & self expression is encouraged and celebrated, allowing the curious minds the freedom to express themselves, without fear of discrimination. To be able to freely experiment & make new connections, that in some instances went on to launch entire careers & industries. I hope you enjoy! Dancethropology was recorded & produced on Wurundjeri country, we humbly pay our respects to elders past present & emerging.
