The best podcasts to Listen to if you like mine!

Who am I?

I'm just a guy who loves Giant Monster Movies and knows a lot about them, so I'd like to share that love and knowledge with as many people as I can. Before I knew what I wanted my show to look like, I had to listen to other shows so I could at least pretend I knew what I was doing long enough to learn. Aside from being inspirations and guide-stones for me as I developed the show, they're just fun to listen to.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is about the history of Giant Monster Movies, which you would think was pretty straightforward, and it is in some ways. You'd be surprised how often the skeleton of the thing is just "guy saw King Kong and decided to try to do his own". But when you sit down and look at the skeleton, you see where the bones were linked by muscle, tendons, and ligaments, and before you know it, you're building a fully fleshed being around "guy saw King Kong and decided to try to do his own". These shows helped my learn how to look at the scars and get the information I needed to flesh out my Frankenstein and explain how it works to others.

What is my podcast playlist about?

It's about what inspired Record All Monsters, why it looks the way it looks, and the landscape it lives in.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Wits ® – APM Podcasts

Why this podcast?

This was one of the very first podcasts I ever listened to. It's smart, funny, and also extremely silly. The host, John Moe is dry and, well, witty as he presents musical performances, sketches, short monologues, and The Wits Game Show, which was the template for the Record All Monsters Game Show.

Wits was a weekly national public radio broadcast produced and distributed by American Public Media. As of September 2015, the broadcast ended. The stage shows that provided material for the broadcast are on hiatus, as is the podcast version of Wits. It is our intention to take a little time away from Wits and then look for ways to bring it back on stage and in podcast in a different form. On Wits, some of the top names in comedy and music have joined host John Moe for sketch comedy, improv, conversation, songs and genuine beauty in a program praised as "one of the rare public radio comedy shows that's actually funny" (Huffington Post) and "one of the most unique, entertaining and diverse shows on radio" (The Growler). You can listen to all of our archives online and follow host John Moe on Twitter (@johnmoe) for more information on Wits and other projects.

2. Monster Kid Radio

Why this podcast?

First of all, Derek is the Man. Second of all, even aside from the absolutely ace content of the show, its peripheries also sparkle like diamonds. Old commercials and trailers for movies that are mentioned, extra segments from guest contributors, and a library of new surf rock lead you into the discussion, sometimes with minor celebrities of the Monster Kid World, and sometimes with schlubs like me who just can't shut up.

Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, John Agar . . . these are the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio, the Rondo Award-winning podcast celebrating the classic, and sometimes not-co-classic, genre cinema of yesteryear. Your host Derek M. Koch is joined by a special guest each episode to talk about a favorite monster movie; favorite classic actor, actress, or director; or a topic relevant to monster kids of all ages. Framed by mostly-spooky surf music, every episode of Monster Kid Radio is your weekly escape to the monster kid playground.

3. The Weekly Planet

Why this podcast?

The Weekly Planet began 10 years ago when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was announced. Since then they have gone over every inch of The Comic Book Movie as a pop-cultural institution from every angle imaginable without turning into pretentious blowhards. Just two blokes talking about movies. I'm sure there's lots of places you can get that, but I think this is the best possible version of it.

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
