The best podcasts for Video Games, Pop Culture & Comedy

Who am I?

Hi! My name is Jason. I am a mid-forties podcaster who lives in the UK. I have a loving family with two teenage boys and a pain in the backside dog called Gizmo (he's lovely really!) I work in Catering but I'm trying everything i can to get out of that trade and do something more interesting and fulfilling (creating content would be a dream!) Pop culture and, especially, video games have always been important parts of my life. Films, TV, and video games always gave me the chance to jump into these realities that I would never experience in real life, and my imagination would grow through seeing these worlds being created through these mediums. Being an only child, these kept me from being lonely but also helped me to have the confidence to try and make friends in the real world.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Obviously, my podcast is about these topics from the past. When I met one of my co-hosts (Rich), who shares the same passions, it made me believe we could have a platform to reminisce and discuss the films, TV shows, and video games that were important to us when we were growing up, and it's been great reliving these and discovering some that we missed along the way. When we started, we went through each year of the 1990's, as that was a special decade for all of us, but that journey is finished. We now concentrate on one film, TV show, or game per episode and break it down into two to three segments. We also discuss modern-day films, TV, and games through our "Prepare to Fast Forward" podcast, and this also gives me the excuse to write game reviews on up-and-coming indie games for our website.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These podcasts featured in this list are ones that inspire me to be a better podcaster. these have all influenced me in one way or another, not only in there presentation but in their professionalism too. It helps that all of these are based on similar topics to my own podcast, and all of them bring top-level content from their respective fields.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. UCP: The GamesMaster Retrospective

Why this podcast?

This podcast covered the UK games show GamesMaster from episode one all the way through to its last episode in series seven. Not only is this podcast well written and interesting, but the hosts carry out their research well, and the influence it had on me was exceptional. there conversations on retro pop culture are always top-notch, bringing some things to my attention that I knew nothing about. This show is also well edited, which also influenced me in many ways. It made me realize how to host a podcast properly through the way the hosts speak, and it made me realize some mistakes I was making in the way I edited my show. This show also inspired me to create our "Ghostwatch" episode through their "Independence Day" episode.

2. Gaming In The Wild - Video Game Reviews

Why this podcast?

The host, John, is an extremely thorough and engaging host here. His opinions on video games are interesting and thoughtful. He carries out reviews on indie and sometimes AAA video games in a way that most other podcasts wouldn't. What John does here in his shows is integrate music from the games he is talking about into the show, and this in turn inspired me to try and do something similar for my own show. I feel it really themes the episode, and as John's show does, it makes me feel a part of the game through its music.

3. Script Apart with Al Horner

Why this podcast?

Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner, and he talks to screenwriters about their first drafts of major films. It ends up being a fascinating listen to how some of our favorite films, from past to present, change from that first draft to the finished script. Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Groundhog Day are just some of the highlights from this podcast. Al himself is an engaging host who has a way of talking that just puts you at ease, and you feel yourself relaxing as he speaks, really settling you in for the conversation that lies ahead.

4. CheapShow

Why this podcast?

Cheapshow is a comedy podcast featuring Paul Gannon and Eli Silverman. The main hook is that they go to local charity shops and try to find bargains, which they will feature on the show. Along the way, they have created a barrage of characters that appear from time to time. It's loud; it's very crude; but most importantly, it's funny. Paul and Eli have tremendous chemistry between them that really shines through each episode, especially when they pretend to fight, as it can sometimes come across as serious, but you know it's just them being silly, and at the end of each show I always have the biggest smile. Although mostly it's just juvenile, fun humor, sometimes they can go serious and be very informative. I have actually learned some interesting things from listening to the show, from local information when they go on walks to what the best instant noodle is, which I now eat every time!

CheapShow is a comedy podcast all about getting the very best out of the worst! Be it Poundlands, Charity Shops, Car Boot Sales or Bargain Bins, hosts Paul Gannon & Eli Silverman poke around in the corners of the high streets and internet to find treasure in the trash. One week it could be a studio based show, the next, a live comedy event. It could even be a location report or a scripted adventure! A few things it is, however, is rude, crude, silly and drizzled in pop culture, nostalgia and plenty of verbal violence! It has guests, videos, songs, reviews, games and dares. 5. All N: a Nintendo podcast

Why this podcast?

Seth and Eric host this Nintendo-themed podcast. Nintendo turned into an important company growing up, and I have always had a passion for their games. All N is my go-to Nintendo podcast, where I go to hear the latest news but also hear interesting features and interviews about Nintendo and indie games. Seth and Eric are very knowledgeable, not only about Nintendo but also about video games in general. The creativity they share also shines through the podcast and makes it a pleasure to listen to each week. The episodes can go quite long but it's certainly worth the commitment
