Who am I?

I'm founding editor of Meat for Tea: The Valley Review, my arts & literary journal that is now over 17 years old. With my husband, Mark, I also produce the Meat for Teacast, and run a book press. I'm passionate about keeping print media alive, creating diverse, vibrant arts communities, both virtually and IRL I taught myself to read when I was 3 and haven't looked back since. I edited my undergrad arts & literary journal, sat on the board of another literary journal when I was in grad. school, and when my colleague, Alex, turned to me in the adjunct faculty office, where we were both teaching college English, and suggested we start a literary zine, Meat for Tea was born.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is the audio companion to my arts & literary journal. My guests are people I've published or folks who've performed at our release parties. I talk with artists, musicians, writers, and perfumers, but the majority of my episodes feature a conversation with an author. Before starting my arts & literary journal, book press, and podcast, I spent long years in the study of writing and the teaching of writing.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My playlist includes a range of podcasts that discuss books and writing, including a podcast for comedians, because they are also writers.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Ratchet Book Club

Why this podcast?

Derik Jones invited me to be a guest on his Storytellers podcast, which is also part of Ratchet Book Club. His process is cool: using a Storymatic box he picks three elements that we guests have to work into our stories. We were given a couple of days to write 5-7 minute stories and send them to him. Each writer was responsible for a different part of what would end up being the larger story. In my case, I was responsible for the beginning. Using a technique like Exquisite Corpse, Derik only provided storytellers with the story fragment directly proceeding their own. Then he'd bring us all together and read the entire story. The results were wonderful and hilarious. I tagged the whole podcast, rather than just one episode, because all of the Ratchet Book Club episodes, Storytellers or otherwise, are wonderful.

2. F***bois of Literature Book Podcast

Why this podcast?

I adore this podcast and was delighted to hear Emily Edwards' guest spot on the Storytellers podcast. I'm a long time fan of this podcast, which offers a fresh, feminist take on literary analysis. It's a lively, humorous listen. I aspire to one day do a guest spot on this one.

•FBOL is now on Patreon! Subscribe: http://www.patreon.com/fuckboisoflit•The podcast about the most groan-worthy, enraging, and sh*t characters in lit. Join host Emily Edwards and a guest for a weekly "book club" discussion on every book you wanted to destroy in English class, but couldn't. Classic literature of Europe and the Americas– everything from mythology to Victorian epics to the modernists– is hard to get through, and each week, we take on a frequently assigned book to talk about all of its highs and lows. These are the Fuckbois of Literature.

4. Getting Down & Wordy

Why this podcast?

Russell and Hannah had me at etymology. The premise for this podcast is unique and you don't have to be an etymology buff to enjoy it. It's endlessly entertaining to hear them break down various pop songs through an etymological lens.

5. The Comedian's Comedian Podcast

Why this podcast?

This might seem like a surprising pick in a list devoted to books and all things literary, but comedians are, first and foremost, writers. I love Stuart Goldsmith's hosting style and the discussions of how each of his guests develops their craft.
