The best podcasts for the dynamics of duos

Who am I?

I'm a Gen Xer who's a fan of music and retro video games (that is, classic arcade and pre-NES). I'm also a record collector, software engineer, and grammar snob. It occurred to me that many of my favorite podcasts are hosted by two people, and one of the things that makes them all fun is the chemistry the hosts have between the two. As a cohost of podcasts that also have two hosts, people have said the same to me.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is about those strange records you might happen upon when browsing through vinyl at estate sales, thrift shops, and the "Miscellaneous" section of a used record store. These records can be strange, quirky, unintentionally funny at times, and oftentimes just plain fun. Many people would see these oddities, laugh, and wonder, "Who buys this stuff?" Well, *I* buy this stuff! (It helps that they're usually cheap!) I do some research and dig up whatever history I can behind those records -- and believe me, that often proves to be quite a challenge! But on the way, I learn some fascinating stuff about not only the artists and companies behind the records, but also about local history and forgotten pockets of pop culture. Interestingly, this has absolutely nothing to do with the playlist topic I chose!

What is my podcast playlist about?

This podcast playlist is about shows that have two hosts and whose chemistry certainly enhances the listening experience.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Into The Vertical Blank

Why this podcast?

As a fan of old video games, I love this Atari podcast hosted by twin brothers who grew up as Atari fanboys and became software engineers as a result of their mutual love of the products from that historic Sunnyvale, California company. Hearing them tell their life stories as framed by their love for Atari brings back my own memories as a kid growing up in the '80s. So enjoyable.

A Podcast about growing with a twin brother up In the 70s and 80s, at the dawn of video games, navigating family strife, punk rock, Star Wars obsessions, and trying to understand the world while developing an inexplicable love for everything “Atari”. -- In this podcast we discuss Atari computers and systems, new and old, review new games we collect, talk about all the systems, and the significance they had in our lives and the lives of others, and even talk about them in an historical context with the backdrop the times they were released, and how they are being used now. We do all this in an effort to finally understand the answer to this existential question: what does it mean to have grown up in the generation of "the Vertical blank." 2. Office Ladies

Why this podcast?

Probably every fan of the US version of the TV show The Office listens to this podcast, or at least is aware of this. Ang and Jenna are best friends, and certainly their chemistry does nothing but make this podcast so enjoyable, even when they discuss topics I have absolutely no interest in.

3. Ten Pence Arcade

Why this podcast?

I think what I love most about this podcast is the silly interplay between Vic and Shaun - playfully cutting each other down, making fun of their intercontinental podcast rivals (who are in real life friends), and blaming each other if they don't like the game they're talking about in a given episode. As an American, I find it quite fun to get insight into the games I played growing up from two blokes from the UK.

4. The Real Brady Bros

Why this podcast?

Chris Knight and Barry Williams reminisce about episodes of The Brady Bunch and share their memories of filming. Their rapport is quite entertaining, and they have no qualms talking about their insecurities as kids filming the show and often the lame plot holes in some episodes! You'd swear they were brothers in real life and not just on the show.

5. The Amber & Lacey, Lacey & Amber Show!

Why this podcast?

I've been a big fan of Amber Ruffin since I saw her in Second City shows such as Between Barack and a Hard Place and No Country for Old White Men in Chicago -- I've seen many Second City revues, and she's by far my favorite of all the performers I've seen over the years. She and her sister Lacey Lamar wrote two hilarious (and, honestly, seriously concerning) books about their history of racist microagressions (and macroagressions) that they've experienced, and they often share some of that in this podcast. But for the most part, it's just two sisters having fun with their sibling rivalries, and they usually have a special guest to shoot the breeze with. This is such a fun podcast.

When late night talk show host Amber Ruffin teamed up with her sister Lacey Lamar they became New York Times Best Selling Authors. But their new podcast pits them against each other! They invite a new, exciting guest on every week! It's quizzes, it's games, it's sibling rivalry. It's fun, it's weekly, it's cute, it's silly. It's a lot of things but mostly it's what you'll be listening to! Lucky you!
