Who am I?

My name is Dan, I'm 38 years old, from Philly, and in 2019 started a podcast called WTFamicom. At my age I live by two rules - don't compare yourself to others and always laugh at your own jokes even when they're not funny. You'll lead a way happier life that way, trust me. I was going through a lot in 2019 and started listening to podcasts to distract from that. I listened to a few gaming ones and thought "hey I can do this" but little did I know how long I'd be doing it. I didn't want to be a boring podcast, so I automatically wanted to take things I thought had never been done before and combine it with things I love. So for my very first ep I took my favorite band of all time, Guns N Roses and tried to find out how many times they showed up in a videogame (spoiler - it's a lot). I've been playing videogames obsessively since I was 5 years old so I figured there had to be somewhere I can talk about this thing that has outlasted anything else in my life.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I don't like boring things. It is not in my nature. I cannot watch a movie or listen to a song that does not try something bold, ambition or weird. I admire the hell out of anyone that makes something like that. For example, my favorite movie is Gremlins 2 and if you never seen it, it applies very much to what I'm talking about. Podcasts are no different. I don't want to listen to a videogame podcast where they just review a videogame and call it a day. Make it your own! So, this playlist includes some podcasts of all genres that make it their own.

What is my podcast playlist about?

This playlist is about other podcasts that take big swings and have their own identify. You do that and the rest will work out.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Retrograde: A Video Game Podcast

Why this podcast?

Two funny guys from Toronto (Mikey and Andrew) who review old videogames how they thought they would when they were kids, play them, then review them as adults. Each episode has its own identity, theme and wild ambition that folks would appreciate. I've been listening to a couple years now and is literally one of the few I check out first thing in the morning when it is released. I highly recommend their episode on the game "L.A. Noire" because they both go full 1940's detective method acting on it.

2. I have a Strange Story

Why this podcast?

Sisters from Texas (Lindsey and Rebecca) who read other people's paranormal encounters. They get the stories from reddit and other dark areas of the internet (I'm' too afraid to ask if they get them from hell!) and I think the idea of reading someone else's spooky real-life tale is a cool concept. Who knows if any of these ghosts or monsters listen, but they should! Who doesn't love a paranormal podcast???

3. Development Hell: The Unmade Horror Movie Podcast

Why this podcast?

The host, Josh Korngut, helps unearth the best horror movies that never made it to the silver screen. This fits perfectly in this playlist because I applaud wild ambition and some of these unmade horror movies (Hellraiser vs Halloween!) are just too awesome to not want to learn more about.

4. NOTHING LASTS FOREVER

Why this podcast?

I couldn't write a better summery so I will just steal theirs - "A podcast that explores the most important question; is NOVEMBER RAIN the greatest music video of all time?" Tara and Robin have watched this Guns N' Roses video every episode and find new things each time, interview people that were responsible for the making of it and even look back at important moments revolving around the band, video and song. Ambitious and weird? Hell yeah.

5. The Diesel System

Why this podcast?

What is a VIN DIESEL? He is more than an actor, he's a myth. And in 2023 I can't believe he's still one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. On this podcast the two hosts (Christian and Spencer) watch every movie of his and decide what IS the definitive Vin Diesel movie and do so using a scale called "The Diesel System". It is scientifically proven to work. That's a Vin guarantee.
