The best podcasts for people who like to bullshit about movies

Who am I?

We're a couple of producers, filmmakers and pop culture nerds who love talking movies. There are a million horror or action podcasts but we noticed that the teen movie genre was seriously underserved, if served at all. So, now we have an excuse to revisit a genre that we love and nerd out every week as we try to explain a generation one teen movie at a time. We grew up on these movies, have worked in the industry and have spent entirely too many hours discussing and listening to others discuss the formative movies that shaped us.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Save the Last Pod is the definitive teen movie podcast that rehashes the formative films that molded our generation – for better and for worse. From John Hughes to Wes Craven, from Laney Boggs to Regina George, we discuss the iconic fights, football games, proms, parties and pies we love, one nostalgia trip at a time.

What is my podcast playlist about?

This is probably our favorite genre of podcast. We've listened to 1000s of episodes and want to share some favorites and start a conversation. What are your top 5? Hopefully sometime soon you'll add STLP to your list.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. ActionBoyz

Why this podcast?

For 80's and 90's action/thriller nerds, ActionBoyz is the only podcast you need. Its Patreon catalogue has over 300 episodes on just about every Arnold, Sly, Dolf, JCVD or Bronson film as well as some lesser-known jewels. It's funny, it's nostalgic and occasionally informative. Give one of the free episodes a shot and subscribe to the Patreon when you need more.

2. Pop Culture Happy Hour

Why this podcast?

Pop Culture Happy Hour is weekly show that mostly covers current TV and film. It is very NPR. It features myriad different voices and viewpoints and it covers all genres. We don't always love the opinions, but that's part of what makes it interesting and kind of refreshing. Most episodes are in the 20-30 minute range, which makes it much more accessible than most podcasts in this genre.

3. The Flop House

Why this podcast?

A couple of former Daily Show writers and a horror nerd/bar owner in Brooklyn cover critical and commercial flops. The three hosts have a really fun rapport that makes you feel like you're hanging with old friends, and occasionally they'll toss in a guest who fits seamlessly into the show. It's fun, it's pretty light and full episodes drop every other week so it's not too taxing to add it to your weekly subscriptions.

The Flop House is a comedy podcast devoted to the worst in recent film. Your hosts (Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy, and Stuart Wellington) watch a questionable film, then engage in an unscripted discussion about the movie's shortcomings and occasional delights, while never being afraid of a pointless, silly digression or two hundred.

4. Blank Check with Griffin & David

Why this podcast?

This is more of a film school nerd podcast that covers directors' filmographies. It's more information packed than the others on this list but that's not to say it's dull. It is, in fact, really funny and very engaging. There's a huge backlog of episodes, including a miniseries on your favorite director - whoever that may be.

Not just another bad movie podcast, Blank Check reviews directors' complete filmographies episode to episode. Specifically, the auteurs whose early successes afforded them the rare ‘blank check’ from Hollywood to produce passion projects. Each new miniseries, hosts Griffin Newman and David Sims delve into the works of film’s most outsized personalities in painstakingly hilarious detail. Produced by Ben Hosley.

5. Subtitles ON with Sean Clements

Why this podcast?

Subtitles On is the newest podcast on this list and it's got potential to be one of the best. Started during the WGA strike, Sean Clements, from Hollywood Handbook and The Flagrant Ones, watches movies with the subtitles on and discusses scripts with other writers. It's a refreshing and interesting perspective and is definitely worth a listen.
