Who am I?
I'm the host of The Movie Wire, Justin Henson. I have 2 wonderful kids and a very lovely and supportive wife, that when we first met, told me she wasn't really into movies that much or going to the theater. I met that with as a challenge of making her love the movies. Then, Movie trip after movie trip, introducing her to numerous movies to get a reaction out of her. I was comping up empty. Come to find out, she would attend/watch these movies with me just so I would keep asking her out. Now 12 years later she is still putting up with me and my movies. My love of film and film criticism started when I was around 10 years old, I was sick and in bed when a couple of guys appeared on tv that everybody would know as the great and late Siskel and Ebert. I was captivated by listening to these two gentlemen. I would actively seek out not only watching and listening but even reading both of their full reviews. I could feel a concern of my parents during birthdays when most kids would ask for toys, I would ask for a subscription of the Chicago Sun Times or Chicago Tribune to read Siskel and Ebert's review columns but being a kid that struggled with reading at a young age, I think my parents would have tried anything. I would read reviews over and over again. I thank these reviews for giving me motivation to read, which lead a drastic improvement of reading and writing when I was younger. My family I can describe growing up as a sports obsessed one, I never felt the appeal of entertainment sitting and watching a game that didn't entertain me, let alone leave me with no feeling after it was done. I was 13 years old when I finally got brave enough to do something that was not like me at all, when my family was distracted by whatever game was on tv, I would sneak out and walk to a local movie theater with my weekly allowance and view whatever film I could. First being Ace Ventura When Nature Calls, followed by in the next couple of weeks buying a ticket to Toy Story but instead sneaking into Casino. Each week I would write a review in my review journal and await to see what Siskel and Ebert had to say about. For years this escalated to comparing my reviews with a lot of the great critics such as John Hartle, Peter Travers, Gene Shalit, etc. This progressed into film growing along with me not only as entertainment but progression of knowledge and film literacy. I have a love of not just film but the creativity and how media, content, and words have impacted our evolution of society in terms of cultural growth. But the adaptions, visions, and ideas of words on paper to the translation on screen, have always fascinated me. I have been part film festivals, film competitions, film production, script revisions and countless movie discussions. With specialized personal focus in Film criticism. It all has been a part of my life for many years. One of my favorite things to do is to study screen adaptions and the art of the spoken word on stage and screen. Along with teaching youth film literacy whenever I can. One of the most important things about the art of stage and screen is not just that it can be contrived as just pure entertainment for a couple hours but unlocks the brain to something much deeper whether you realize it or not. This is not just the birth of creatively in youth but the continued evolution in society. What film criticism does is attempt to exercise that creative muscle to understand the creators behind what you see and what's so special about it, is the fact nobody will see it exactly the same as you. Film is the last great debate that ends with understanding different points of view....most of the time.
