The best podcasts for Irish History

Who am I?

I am from Roscommon. My family are half from Ulster, half from Mayo. I am a retiree. I live in Perth Scotland. I like history and irish heritage. I love Irish folk tales, music and of course history. Our small island has an incredible and tumultuous history and my brother in Westport introduced me to the idea of podcasting as a way to explore these topics.

What is my podcast playlist about?

All my favorites and every one of them is about Ireland the home of all my known ancestors. I am sure we may have had the odd interloper but I think we are all irish.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Fascinating People Fascinating Places

Why this podcast?

This one isn't exclusively about Ireland but they have covered Ireland several times. The 1798 rising is still a divisive issue but they had a professor emeritus from Dublin on to talk about that. They also talked about Grace O'Malley the pirate and one of my kinfolk. Additionally, the episode about the Orange Order was very well-balanced without taking sides.

2. Irish History Podcast

Why this podcast?

This one goes into much greater depth and Fin Dwyer has a lovely voice as the narrator. It might be too much information for some folk but I love hearing all the wonderful stories.

From the Norman Invasion to the War of Independence, the Great Famine to the Troubles, the Irish History Podcast takes you on a journey through the most fascinating stories in Ireland's past. Whether it’s the siege of Dublin in 1171 or gun battles in the 1920s, the podcast vividly recreates a sense of time and place. Each episode is meticulously researched, creating character-driven narratives that are engaging and accessible for all.

Since the first episode was released back in 2010, the podcast has covered scores of captivating stories. Major multi-part series have explored the Great Famine, the Norman Invasion, and Irish involvement in the Spanish Civil War. If you are looking for standalone episodes, there are lots of great interviews with leading Irish historians covering topics from medieval sex magic to Irish connections in the Jack the Ripper murders!

Why not start with 'Three Days in July', an acclaimed mini-series from the summer of 2024. It explores the early years of the Troubles and the forgotten story of a young Londoner who was shot dead by the British Army in Belfast in 1970.

3. Shite Talk: An Irish History Podcast

Why this podcast?

I wasn't too sure about this one due to the bad language in the title and it has some rather colorful content that could be toned down without harming the show. But overall the gentlemen and quick-witted and know an awful lot about the subject.

A somewhat accurate retelling of Irish history stories.
Join Irish stand up comedians Jason Brennan and Kevin Larney as they take turns giving their best accounts of some of Ireland's silly, strange, and downright stupid tales from the past.

4. The Irish Revolution

Why this podcast?

This is an older one and not so much a podcast as a college lecture. It is very intellectual and precise but if you can pay attention like a good student it has a wealth of information.

The Irish Revolution was a module taught by renowned historian Professor Michael Laffan in the School of History and Archives, UCD from the mid-1970's until his retirement in 2010. The course covers a tumultuous period in Irish history and examines the interaction of different groups (in particular unionists, moderate and radical nationalists, and the British), the causes and impact of events (such as the Home Rule Crisis, the Easter Rising, and the Treaty), and patterns of continuity and discontinuity in the period spanning the First World War. In association with the UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies and historyhub.ie all 10 of the lectures were recorded.
