The best podcasts for finding out about language

Who am I?

I'm a linguist and a co-host of the Because Language podcast. I like our show, but there are a lot of other great linguistic shows out there. I always enjoyed learning languages in high school and university. I minored in Spanish and Russian. But halfway through a class on Spanish phonology, I realised I really loved linguistics. The regular patterns of sound change! Seeing language as it moves through time! How people use it to convey, navigate, and perform their identity. I was hooked. One linguistics degree later, here I am, still trying to get to the bottom of this incredibly complicated thing that we do so automatically.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Because Language is a show about linguistics, the science of language. We take on the big topics of how language works, and why it is the way it is, but we also bring news, games, and the dreaded Words of the Week.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These are the lingopods that I go to most often. I know these folks pretty well. We've done crossover episodes, we've had deep chats. But you'll love the shows even without knowing them personally, because they're just THAT DARN ENGAGING.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Vocal Fries

Why this podcast?

Carrie and Megan tackle the vast and important area of language discrimination. It's just never-ending, and it's one of the areas where linguists can do the most good.

2. Lexitecture

Why this podcast?

I love etymology, and Ryan and Amy tackle it with a disarmingly joyous zest. The fun they're having is palpable.

A Canadian (Ryan) and a Scot (Amy) talking about the words in the English language that fascinate them most at the moment, looking at their histories and origins and trying to piece together just how they got to where they are today. This is a podcast for anyone interested in etymology (the study of words and their origins/history). If you've ever found yourself happier after discovering some bizarre bit of trivia about a word that you hadn't even given a second thought to (such as how the word 'trivia' relates to its Latin components meaning "three roads"), this might just be the podcast for you.

5. Accentricity

Why this podcast?

Our accents tell a lot about our history and our community. It's something about yourself that we can't help but reveal whenever we speak. I like the way that Sadie approaches these very personal stories.

Why do we love some accents and hate others? Why do we talk differently in different situations? Does learning a new language really teach you to think differently? In this linguistics podcast, I examine how the way we talk connects to who we are.
