The best podcasts for female hosted film thoughts

Who am I?

I'm passionate about film history, and the modus operandi of Verbal Diorama is simple: movies are tough to make! The coming together of a team of people from all walks of life to make something to entertain, delight and educate us for 90+ mins is not an easy task, and yet so many succeed at it. That must be something to celebrate. I'm not only a podcaster (although it is my primary love), I'm also a writer, and this year I co-created the Independent Podcast Awards, the first truly indie awards show for UK & Irish indie podcasts. I love indie podcasts, and I want to highlight them as often as possible. Ever since I first saw Jurassic Park at the cinema, my film history fire was lit. How did they make dinosaurs real? Jurassic Park holds up so well because of the fundamental basics of filmmaking - great story, cast, characters, script, cinematography, direction and visual effects. Ever since, I've been fascinated with how each movie is made, and bringing that story to people's ears with Verbal Diorama. It's here to celebrate movies; their unique histories and legacies, and why they remain so special to so many of us.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Verbal Diorama is one of very few female-fronted movie podcasts. I wanted to highlight some other incredible female-hosted (or predominantly female hosted) film podcasts, who are bringing their unique experiences as women to both film review and criticism, as well as film history and film recommendations.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Different movie podcasts, all from a female (or primarily female) perspective, that teach you new things, recommend alternatives to the norm or just celebrate the movies no one else does! #womensupportingwomen

The podcasts I picked and why

1. You Must Remember This

Why this podcast?

Karina Longworth is one of the best female film podcasters around, and while 'You Must Remember This' is a big show, the research and production is top-notch. I've learned so much about Hollywood during the early 20th century; stories that would have mostly faded away if not for Karina's podcast. It's a huge inspiration for Verbal Diorama.

You Must Remember This is a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. It’s the brainchild and passion project of Karina Longworth (founder of Cinematical.com, former film critic for LA Weekly), who writes, narrates, records and edits each episode. It is a heavily-researched work of creative nonfiction: navigating through conflicting reports, mythology, and institutionalized spin, Karina tries to sort out what really happened behind the films, stars and scandals of the 20th century.

2. Tasteless

Why this podcast?

As someone who always roots for the underdog, I love Tasteless. Emily takes one wildly popular/critically acclaimed movie and proposes a better alternative, usually one that flopped at the box office or got bad reviews. It's great for alternative recommendations to popular movies, and Emily is a terrific host.

Tasteless is a movie podcast that pays tribute to the films not enough people are talking about, from the underrated to the absurd. In each episode, Emily Higgins takes a highly regarded film and compares it to a similar but overlooked movie she recommends instead. The bonus series called Strong Female Leads features interviews with the actresses and creators who have inspired this podcast with their work, both on-screen and off.

3. Popcorn Psychology

Why this podcast?

This is a majority female-hosted podcast (Brittney, Hannah and Ben) but they're all licensed therapists breaking down and analysing movies from their individual perspectives as a child, individual, and marriage and family therapist. They blend movies and mental health in a fascinating way, and I learn something from every episode.

4. W-Rated

Why this podcast?

Everyone loves terrible movies. You know, the ones at the bottom of the IMDb list. But no one loves them more than Clare and Daisy, and I love that they love them enough to make their podcast all about the worst rated movies in existence! They're hilariously funny, brilliant women, and this is a great podcast to just enjoy at any time, day or night.

5. Movies & Us

Why this podcast?

I honestly just started listening to this (after one of the hosts created a Goodpods list with Verbal Diorama on it!), but I started listening, and I'm hooked! Jen and Sarah are engaging and fun, and their reviews are engaging and interesting. They mostly cover new movies, but occasionally some classics too. Their episode on Promising Young Woman (a movie I love) also helped me see it from a different perspective. I love podcasts that make me think!
