The best podcasts for enjoying and laughing about movies.

Who am I?

I'm a longtime movie fan and film/television professional who's been working in podcasts in recent years. I run Stereoactive Media, which produces a few different podcasts. I went to school for film (sorry!) and think about movies almost constantly. I previously hosted a weekly arts and culture podcast that, among other things, featured regular segments on new releases and movies playing at film festivals.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Stereoactive Movie Club features 5 film fan friends discussing movies that have, at one time or another, been ranked in the top 10 of Sight and Sound magazine's decennial polling of critics and directors to determine the "greatest films of all time." We range from film buffs and entertainment professionals to more casual film fans, which brings a multilayered dynamic to our discussion that makes them both informative and accessible. Each of the podcasts I chose are about movies and are also hugely entertaining besides that. The way the hosts and guests casually discuss film in an accessible way while also dropping tons of knowledge, is something we strive for on our show.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Podcasts about movies that are both informative and entertaining – and which each influenced the creation of Stereoactive Movie Club.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Blank Check with Griffin & David

Why this podcast?

I came to this show after it was already a few years in, but I immediately listened to their entire archive (including, of course, the original Star Wars prequel-themed run of episodes) over the course of my commutes, walks, etc. What the show became after it's early days, with its focus on director filmographies, made me want to start a podcast that similarly featured mini-series within the larger show. Our "rounds" of episodes each feature movies picked in a draft by our co-hosts and essentially function as mini-series.

Not just another bad movie podcast, Blank Check reviews directors' complete filmographies episode to episode. Specifically, the auteurs whose early successes afforded them the rare ‘blank check’ from Hollywood to produce passion projects. Each new miniseries, hosts Griffin Newman and David Sims delve into the works of film’s most outsized personalities in painstakingly hilarious detail. Produced by Ben Hosley.

2. Unspooled

Why this podcast?

I listened to Nicholson's previous show, and was excited when she came back to podcasting with Paul Scheer (who I knew from his acting and How Did This Get Made?). The original run of shows covered each film on the AFI 100 Years... 100 Movies list. And since I'd always been intrigued by the decennial Sight and Sound lists, I thought a show that similarly covered movies from those would be fun to make, so this is probably one of the biggest inspirations for Stereoactive Movie Club.

Each week actor & comedian Paul Scheer (Black Monday, The League) and film critic Amy Nicholson (LA Times Chief Film Critic ) watch and discuss the best movies out there. From the classics to new releases and every indie film in-between. Along the way, they’ll dissect iconic scenes, spotlight their favorite characters, and decide if these movies still stand the test of time.

3. We Hate Movies

Why this podcast?

This or Filmspotting was probably the first movie podcast I listened to regularly. But the hangout vibe of WHM is what makes it so remarkable and it's something I hoped to emulate when I was thinking about launching Stereoactive Movie Club.

Since 2010, the We Hate Movies podcast has been loudly celebrating and tearing apart movies from across the spectrum: from forgotten '80s actioners and insane romantic comedies of the '90s, to the early CGI blockbusters of the aughts and the hyper-nostalgic franchises of the 2010s and today. Every week, comedians Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Eric Szyszka, and Chris Cabin pick a movie from the near-past to discuss and joke around about in all its positive and negative glory.

4. The Rewatchables

Why this podcast?

I didn't get into this show until long after we'd launched Stereoactive Movie Club, but once I heard it, I could tell that I'd probably been influenced by it through other shows I listened to that were clearly, in turn, inspired by it. And since I started listening to it myself, some of their lingo has definitely entered my own vocabulary here and there.

5. 70mm

Why this podcast?

I only recently got turned onto this show, so it hasn't really influenced Stereoactive Movie Club, yet. But I'm loving it so far and I think the active and engaged community of film lovers they've managed to build is itself something to be inspired by going forward.
