The best podcasts about religion for people who aren't religious

Who am I?

I'm a religious studies teacher and researcher and the co-host Pod Only Knows alongside Dr. Kelly J. Baker, historian of American religion. My degree is in religious studies and I have been writing about and teaching religion for more than two decades, as has Kelly. We both feel that the there are not enough podcasts about religion for people who aren't themselves religious but interested in how religion works and operates in the world.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

On Pod Only Knows, Dr. Kelly J. Baker and John Brooks invite other people from the wide and wild world of religious studies to talk to them about why and how they do what they do and why their work matters to us all. They also talk to each other about the ideas, stories, and histories that fascinate them and that they think you should know about, too.

What is my podcast playlist about?

These are the shows I listen to that also cover religion in a way that is accessible to outsiders and not interested in evangelizing. They are informative, engaging, and entertaining.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Weird Religion

Why this podcast?

Weird Religion is exactly what it sounds like - how weird religion is. The hosts both love religion as an are of academic inquiry, both come with different areas of expertise, and both have a lot of fun with topic.

Weird Religion is a podcast for people who think religion is weird but love it anyway. Your hosts, Leah Payne and Brian Doak, are both professors, authors, and pop culture aficionados, whose interests range from archaeology and history and linguistics to LARPing and The Walking Dead. Episodes tackle some piece of media highlighting the wonderful weirdness of religious experience—a documentary, a television show, a Twitter scandal—and use that as a "thread" on which to hang reflections on a wide variety of topics. Cults. The perils of fame within the evangelical world. Church attendance. Atheism. Gamer communities. Millennials and avocado toast. It's all here.

3. Keeping It 101: A Killjoy's Introduction to Religion Podcast

Why this podcast?

Ilyse and Megan have great chemistry and are very fun together, and their show really goes out of its way to bring in listeners who have no real background in religious studies. It's a great way to be introduced to a lot of ideas that can seem intimidating and to learn how to speak the language of RS.

Keeping it 101 is the podcast that helps our nerdy listeners make sense of religion. Why religion? Well, if you read the news, have a body, exist in public, or think about race, gender, class, ability, or sexuality, you likely also think about religion — even if you don’t know it yet. Let us show you why religion is both a lot more important and a little easier to understand than you might think. Put us in your earholes and let us show you why religion isn’t done with you — even if you’re done with religion.

4. The Classical Ideas Podcast

Simply stated, religion matters. Religion matters not only for personal reasons, but also for social, economic, political, and military purposes. Unfortunately, studies suggest that religious knowledge and cultural literacy for any religious tradition is either in decline or is non-existent in the United States, despite being one of the most religiously diverse nation on earth. Today, religion is implicated in nearly every major national and international issue. The public arena is awash in religious explanations and arguments for nearly every issue. The goal of The Classical Ideas Podcast is to empower students with the core knowledge of major world religions to improve citizenship and agency in a diverse society. Welcome to the show!

5. History in the Bible

Why this podcast?

Lastly, if you're looking for a better understanding of the Bible from someone without any skin in the game, you can't go wrong with Garry Stevens' excellent, thorough, multi-year analysis of the intersection the Bible and history. Engaging, warm, funny, and incredibly well-organized, it's a great listen.

A guide to the history presented in the Bible, for people of all faiths and backgrounds, presented by an independent podcaster, and biblical studies buff. I explore the religion of ancient Israel, the beginnings of Christianity, then finally the evolution of the heirs of Abraham to the year 200. I discuss every single book in every Bible (there are more than you think!). Lightly garnished with a dash of drollery, a soupçon of scrutiny, and not one ounce of objectivity. Not one ounce! The main narrative concluded in January 2024. But I continue to publish Afterlife shows.
