Denise Aquino and Patricia Destine are two women of color who are dedicated to promoting diversity within the sport of rowing. Both are former rowers turned coxswains turned coaches in the sport. Together they have almost 25 years of experience on the erg, at regattas, in the launch, or at the boathouse. No stranger to navigation or microphones, these former coxswains amplify what it’s like to navigate the topic of race within the white-dominated sport of rowing. Like most bodies of water, the tide is changing; there are more American rowers of color than there has ever been. You’ll hear from people who represented the U.S. in international races to folks who just started to row this year. Tune in to listen to a mix of interviews, special co-hosts, and tag-team shows from hosts, Denise and Patricia. Whether a rower or not, you’re not going to want to miss. Hit subscribe and enjoy.

But this requires transformative change. Why Tree Planters Podcast you ask? Each month we look at problems and solutions relating to how we live in modern society, including those of sprawl and associated consumption patterns and behaviour, climate change, habitat degradation and species loss, community development and empowerment, knowledge of and connection to place, leadership and accountable governance, among others. We welcome you to join us on our journey. Earth Reflections is a new podcast series by the Network of African Women Environmentalists (NAWE), to promote inter-generational and cross-sectoral dialogue, between the young Landscape Guardians and the environmental experts who have agreed to act as Landscape Mentors, supporting on the ground activities for landscape restoration during this UN Decade on Ecosystems Restoration 2021-2030. NAWE is hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), working in partnership with UNDP, The Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN), The Netherlands Red Cross/Partners for Resilience Programme, UN Women, FAO and The Wangari Maathai Foundation.
Is it possible to eradicate poverty? What steps should be taken to ensure an environmentally sustainable future for our planet? Rio+20 is a United Nations conference that draws in participation from all over the world attracting members of governments, the private sector as well as NGO’s amongst the thousands of guests who attend. The primary reason being to develop strategies to reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection as we look to the future. In this collection Open University academics reflect on its progress and prospects, and demonstrate that international gatherings of political leaders are not (fortunately?) the only game in town.
