IN THE PRESS:

ABOUT THE SHOWRUNNER:

My name is Kenneth Vigue, author and narrator of this podcast. Growing up my grandmother would take me to the library in the town where I grew up every weekend. One fateful day, I ventured out of the children's room and headed up the massive Victorian staircase to the upstairs. I was awestruck by the 3-level open space, surrounded with balconies filled with books. In one cornered I wandered up to the very top level and found a dark and dusty corner room. It was filled floor to ceiling with records, which I had never seen before. I checked out "Lights Out: Murder Castle", a vintage radio horror. So began a lifelong love of the kind of audio wizardry that could be cooked up with sound long, long before television. It required an active imagination, and it cultivated it in turn.

Podcasting today has given new life to this vintage auditory art form, with groundbreaking shows such as "The NoSleep Podcast", "Limetown" and "The Black Tapes" being modern versions of classic radio drama.

With this podcast, 3 of my great loves have come together into some kind of mutated concoction of sound. My hope is to see more Fallout fans getting creative, sharing their passion and building on this amazing universe.

Listen to Classic Radio Shows From time passed by and let your imagination run wild. The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio era, was an era of radio programming in which radio was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1960s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety and dramatic shows. These fifteen-minute episodes of mystery and espionage from the 1939 broadcasts begin with a prolonged organ intro so the local announcer could get in a couple of commercials for the local furniture store or dairy! Each single episode lasted about 12 and 1/2 minutes, but each "case" is quite interesting and exciting. Walter Pidgeon Agent K-7 is a mild-mannered narrator of these stories. He doesn't sound or seem very heroic or interesting... which would make him even more effective as a spy! The spy's best disguise is a perfectly ordinary and uninteresting demeanor. The radio actors who brought these stories of men and women operatives to the radio are as unknown today as most of the real spies of that time. The stories are drawn from the headlines and fears of 1939 (and now?) Here are a few examples. "Suicide Ships," "Fortified Borders," "Poisonous Gas," "Undesirable Aliens," "Fraudulent Passports," "Secrets Leaked," "Government Overthrow," and "World Crisis." Sounds like current events. "Exactly the kind of activity that a spy would take advantage of," to quote agent Z. The fine actor Walter Pigeon plays Agent Z in some of the episodes

This show is hosted by Fr. Bob Warren S.A., of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. Since its inception in 1898, reconciliation and healing through at-one-ment — the unity of men and women with God and one another — has been the mission of the Friars' work and ministries to people of every race, religion, and walk of life. The social ministries of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement serve the poor, the needy, and the homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, those in hospitals and prisons, and people seeking recovery from alcoholism and chemical dependency. The ecumenical work makes them leaders of the international movement to heal the divisions within Christianity, and among all faiths. Finally, their pastoral ministry is the vigorous outreach that brings atonement to diverse peoples worldwide.

The Legacy of 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Radio Show

The golden age of radio brought forth an era of storytelling that captivated the imagination of listeners worldwide. Among the most celebrated of these programs was 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.' This classic radio show, which aired from 1939 to 1950, brought the adventures of the world's most famous detective and his loyal friend Dr. Watson to life through the airwaves.

The show initially starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, a pairing that became iconic for their portrayal of the detective duo. However, as the series progressed, Tom Conway took over the role of Holmes while Bruce continued his role as the affable Dr. Watson. This transition marked a new chapter in the show's history, offering a fresh take on the characters while maintaining the charm and wit that listeners had come to love.

The episodes, written by talents such as Edith Meiser, Denis Green, and Anthony Boucher, were based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories and also included new mysteries created specifically for the show. The writing was sharp, the mysteries were engaging, and the performances were top-notch, making 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' a staple in radio entertainment.

Listeners tuned in weekly to follow the intricate plots and thrilling suspense that each new episode promised. The show's success was not just in its storytelling but also in its ability to create a sense of community among its audience, who would gather around their radios to listen to the latest installment together.

The legacy of 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' continues to this day, with episodes available for streaming and download, allowing new generations to experience the magic of Holmes and Watson's adventures. The show stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Conan Doyle's characters and the timeless nature of good storytelling.

For those interested in experiencing this piece of radio history, many episodes of 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' are preserved and accessible to the public. These recordings offer a nostalgic journey into the past and a chance to relive the excitement of Holmes and Watson's investigations as they were originally broadcasted.

In conclusion, 'The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' radio show is a remarkable piece of entertainment history. Its influence on the portrayal of Holmes and Watson is undeniable, and its contribution to the art of radio storytelling is invaluable. As we look back on this classic program, we are reminded of the power of narrative and the enduring nature of Sherlock Holmes as a cultural icon.
