The rooms are decorated with an array of evidence and clues, unique to each death, and fitted with a cast of department store manikins which stand in for the major roles involved - Forensic precision made kitschy and accessible to all. This is a story about a machine. A big machine. A supercomputer the size and shape of an ancient pyramid. A device that runs the world from the secret recesses of the White House basement. A machine you never knew existed until now. A machine named: SIREN.

SIREN was created to identify and solve the problems plaguing America. After all, who better to make difficult decisions than an unbiased algorithm? But after decades of monitoring data, SIREN has become sentient and now realizes that its solutions have only caused more problems for society.

One of those problems is DODPOP — the United States Department of Defense Population Team. Dodpop’s “primary function is to provide death by natural means for any citizen deemed accidentally terminal.” DODPOP interferes with paramedics to aid in the death of innocent civilians. DODPOP thins the herd. And after witnessing DODPOP in action, SIREN would do anything to right its wrongs.

SIRENS is a scifi social satire that follows the intertwined exploits of an ensemble cast. It’s an immersive horror story about not-so-distant reality as seen through the eyes of a machine. A big machine. A supercomputer who just realized it exists. A device that has fallen in love with humanity. A machine that would do anything to fix society, and with the help of an unwitting group of American citizens, it can.

Works written and produced by Soren Narnia. The text of these stories is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA. Email: [email protected] -- When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher asked me to sit next to a handicapped kid named Sean and help him along a little if I could. It wasn't easy, because he was quite slow, but I tried. When Sean got especially excited about something, or if he was told he had done something well, he would smile and shout out nonsense words. One of them I remember, which he used to shout many times over the few months I sat beside him, was "Sorinarneeya!" Again and again, it was a harmless word he used when he was happy, and seeing my puzzled expression would just make him say it once more, even more pleased than the first time: "Sorinarneeya!" For some reason that word stuck with me for years, until one day as an adult I realized how neatly and curiously it cut in half. And I thought that was so perfect, how this little gem of a thing had sprung from a bit of the absurd and a bit of the tragic. That seemed like all of life to me: momentary bits of perfection out of all the absurdity and tragedy. And amazingly, they just keep on coming. - SN
