President Trump has called the sweeping domestic policy bill that recently passed in the House the most important piece of legislation in his second term — a single bill that would unlock his entire domestic agenda.
But as that bill heads to the Senate, it’s raising questions among Republicans about whom Trumpism is really for. Today, the New York Times congressional correspondent Catie Edmondson joins “The Daily” to talk about the big messy battle over what Republicans have named the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Guest: Catie Edmondson, a congressional correspondent for The New York Times.
Background reading:
President Trump is pressuring Republicans to back his policy bill, but the measure’s opponents have a powerful new ally: Elon Musk.
Mr. Trump’s policy bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt, the Congressional Budget Office said on Wednesday. That estimate was all but certain to inflame concerns over the fiscal consequences of the legislation.

This episode contains strong language.
Since 2021, nearly half the states in the U.S. have passed bans on medical treatments for transgender minors. The Trump administration is now targeting the care, and in the coming weeks, the Supreme Court is expected to weigh in.
Against that backdrop, “The Daily” is running the first episode of a six-part series from NYT Audio about the story of youth gender medicine — where it came from, whom it was meant to help, and what may come next in the legal and political fights over its future.
It starts in the Netherlands, with a clinical psychologist and a 16 year-old who was determined to go through life as the gender he had long felt he was.
Guests: Azeen Ghorayshi is a reporter for The New York Times covering the intersection of sex, gender and science. Austin Mitchell is a supervising audio producer for The New York Times.
You can find all six episodes of “The Protocol,” along with additional reading material, at nytimes.com/theprotocol.

Trump stokes chaos and incites violence in Los Angeles, deploying the Marines and the National Guard, against the request of the governor and mayor, to quell protests opposing ICE deportation raids in downtown LA and nearby Paramount. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man wrongly deported to an El Salvadoran megaprison, returns to the United States to face charges his lawyers claim are made up. And Elon and Trump attempt to mend their relationship, but we're not really buying it. Jon, Lovett, and Tommy talk about Lovett's experience at the protests, how ICE raids escalated over the weekend, and new drama brewing at Ken Martin's DNC. Then, Tommy asks Governor Gavin Newsom about Trump's threats to arrest him and how he's pushing back against the President's authoritarian playbook.

Mireille Silcoff recently wrote an article for The New York Times Magazine titled “Why Gen X Women Are Having the Best Sex.” At a time of life when many women describe feeling less visible and less desirable, Silcoff said, her life instead “exploded in a detonation of sex confetti.”
On this episode of Modern Love, Silcoff shares the juicy back story to her popular article, from her coming of age in Montreal to the surprising sexual resurgence she experienced after her divorce. Silcoff reflects on what it feels like to be a highly sexual person in her early 50s and tells us how being part of Gen X is central to her newfound freedom.

If you’re tired of picking apart your appearance, hiding your body, or never feeling good enough, this episode is for you.
Today, you’ll learn the 4 simple steps you can take to build lasting confidence and finally feel good in your body.
This powerful episode was inspired by a raw and emotional conversation Mel had with viral comedian Jake Shane.

So, Mel called in the experts. In this episode, you’ll hear from Mel and Jake and learn tools from two renowned psychiatrists:
-Dr. Judith Joseph, MD, double board-certified psychiatrist, professor at Columbia and NYU Medical Schools, and author of the bestselling book High Functioning.
-Dr. Ashwini Nadkarni, MD, Harvard Medical School professor and psychiatrist at Mass General Brigham who specializes in anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and depression.
Together, they break down the surprising psychology behind body shame and give you a practical, proven roadmap to feeling better, starting now.
You’ll learn how to:
- Break free from body shame, obsession, and constant comparison
- Rewire your brain for confidence and lasting self-acceptance
- Use 4 science-backed steps to heal how you see yourself
- Understand the hidden psychology behind body image and self-talk
- Unpack the shocking research on how screens and modern life are distorting your self-image (and how to fix it)
This isn’t just a conversation. It’s your roadmap to healing, backed by science.
After listening you will have the tools, the science, and the mindset shift you need to stop hiding—and start seeing yourself clearly.
Because when you change how you see yourself, you change everything.

On the evening of May 10, 1988, a passing driver on Howard Street in Brockton, MA, stopped to investigate something unusual on the side of the road. When the driver got closer to what they thought was a bag, they realized it was actually the body of twenty-four-year-old Anthony LoConte, bleeding badly from injuries to his face and head.
Initially, investigators believed LoConte was the victim of a hit-and-run accident; however, when the coroner examined the body, he discovered a bullet hole in the back of LoConte’s head, indicating that he’d been murdered.
It took twelve years for investigators to track down LoConte’s killer, but in the winter of 2000, California Highway Patrol arrested Robert Morganti on drug charges and a quick background check connected them to a 1988 warrant for Morganti for the murder of Anthony LoConte.
Robert Morganti was extradited back to Massachusetts, where he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for LoConte’s murder. However, due to a controversial 2024 law concerning life sentences for young offenders, Robert Morganti could be granted parole in the near future.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk's romance comes to a fiery end as the two erupt into an explosive feud, attacking each other across social media. Jon and Dan comb through the insults, including Elon calling for Trump's impeachment, Trump threatening to end all of Elon's government contracts, and, our personal favorite, Elon tweeting that Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. Fun day! The guys also discuss Trump's recent slate of executive orders: another round of attacks on Harvard University, a 2025 version of Trump 1.0’s infamous Muslim ban, and an investigation into the alleged coverup of President Biden's mental and physical health. Then, Jon and Lovett sit down with Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson for an extended interview about their New York Times bestselling book, Original Sin, which reckons with Biden's decision to run for reelection.

This week, we're exploring the fine line between neighborly and nefarious. Because sure, community is important—but not all of them are worth joining.
Trevin is feeling the heat of summer, or as he calls it, Body Dysmorphia Season. In a rare moment of vulnerability, he opens up about the struggle of connecting to his body in a world that won’t stop looking.
Meanwhile, Amanda returns with a major life update, packed with dilemmas. New house? New job? New levels of chaos? Check, check, and check.
In Killer Facts, Trevin dives into the Bayeux Tapestry—a medieval embroidery depicting the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. That leads to the latest game round of Dong or Dagger?, because of course it does. Amanda shares a jaw-dropping fact from Ripley's Believe It or Not involving authentic vampire-killing kits—and maybe discovers a new merch opportunity for the show.
For stories, Trevin travels to the unincorporated neighborhood of Silverthorne, Colorado, where one resident is being repeatedly targeted... with bags of dog poop. A petty crime? Yes. A whodunit? Absolutely. Call it a turder mystery.
Then Amanda takes us to Joliet, Illinois, where a man named Clifton Williams gets himself into trouble over one unfortunate courtroom sound. Is Judge Daniel Rozak dishing out justice—or just making people afraid to breathe? This case is not a yawn-fest.
Take a break from the heavy and get petty—because this week, we’re placing you right in the middle of some truly criminal communities.

Trump has been making some foreign policy moves I didn’t entirely expect. He seems determined to get a nuclear deal with Iran. He’s been public about his disagreements with Benjamin Netanyahu. He called Vladimir Putin “crazy.” And he keeps talking about wanting his legacy to be that of a peacemaker.
So what, at this point, can we say about Trump’s foreign policy? What is he trying to do, and how well is it working? If he succeeds, what might his legacy be?
Emma Ashford is a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, a foreign policy think tank, and the author of the forthcoming book “First Among Equals.” She comes from a school of thought that’s more sympathetic to the “America First” agenda than I typically am. But she’s also cleareyed about what is and isn’t working and the ways that Trump is an idiosyncratic foreign policy maker who isn’t always following an “America First” agenda himself.

🎧 Was justice truly out of reach for nearly 50 years? Dive into this heartbreaking true crime story!
Welcome to Yore Town, where we delve into the shadows of history's most compelling and often tragic unsolved cases. In this deeply unsettling episode, we confront the chilling disappearance of Gretchen Harrington, an innocent eight-year-old girl who vanished in 1975 while simply walking to Bible camp in her quiet Pennsylvania community. This is a story of shattered innocence, decades of agonizing uncertainty, and the ultimate betrayal by someone in a position of ultimate trust.
Imagine the profound fear that gripped a close-knit town when Gretchen didn't return home. We discuss the desperate community response, the immediate search efforts, and the agonizing discovery of her remains two months later, turning a missing child case into a haunting cold case. For nearly five decades, the question lingered: Who took Gretchen Harrington? The answers seemed perpetually out of reach, leaving a wound that refused to heal.
Our hosts meticulously trace the agonizing journey of this unsolved murder, detailing how the years turned into decades without a breakthrough. The hope for justice dwindled, yet the memory of Gretchen never faded for those who loved her and the community that desperately sought answers.
Then, in a stunning turn of events in 2023, a crucial witness finally came forward, igniting a dormant investigation. What followed sent shockwaves through the very foundation of the community: the chilling confession of a seemingly benevolent and trusted pastor who had been a familiar face in Gretchen's life. How could someone in such a position of spiritual authority commit such a heinous act? The revelation of this shocking confession underscores the insidious nature of predators in positions of trust and forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about evil lurking in plain sight.
This isn't just a retelling of a crime; it's a profound reflection on the enduring themes of lost innocence, the crushing weight of betrayal, and the critical importance of listening to survivors – sometimes, even from a childhood diary. The Gretchen Harrington case serves as a powerful testament that justice can take time, even decades, but it's truly never too late for the truth to emerge. Join the Yore Town Podcast as we navigate this emotionally charged narrative, honoring Gretchen's memory and exploring the complex path to long-awaited justice.

On a cold winter night in 1999, a man drove down a dark street towards his house in a small Iowa town. Suddenly, he saw something glowing in his headlights, and he slammed on the brakes. He got out of his car. And there, in the lights, he saw a dog standing all by herself. And she was making this soft squeaking sound like she was scared. The man slowly approached, talking to the dog as he walked. He knew everyone who lived in his neighborhood, and he’d never seen this dog before. He knelt down and kept trying to calm the dog. She didn’t look hurt and she didn’t have any tags. Slowly, the man coaxed her to follow him into his house. And over the next few weeks, he would try to locate her owner. But the man had no idea that this dog hadn’t just wandered off... and that she was the key police desperately needed to solve a gruesome murder.

African Grey Parrot expert Irene Pepperberg helps us understand how this could work, and shares some insights from her work with a parrot named Alex.
And one quick note from our producer Pat Walters: Jim considers Sadie to be a “service animal,” a designation under the Americans with Disabilities Act that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities to bring certain animals into public places. The term service animal sometimes is legally limited to include only dogs and miniature horses.
Jim disagrees with those limitations, but the local bus company, regardless of definitions, said they’ll make an exception for Sadie.

Doctor and special correspondent, Avir Mitra takes Lulu on an epic journey live on stage at a little basement club called Caveat, here in New York. Starting with an ingredient in breastmilk that babies can’t digest, a global hunt that takes us from Bangladesh to the Mennonite communities here in the US, we discover an ancient symbiotic relationship that might be on the verge of disappearing. So sip a vicarious cocktail, settle in, and explore the surprising ways our bodies forge deep, invisible connections that shape our lives.
This live show is part of a series we are doing with Avir that we are calling “Viscera.” Each event is conversation that takes the audience on journey into a quirk or question or mystery inside of us, and gives them a visceral experience with the viscera of us. The previous installment of the series, was called “How to Save a Life.”

President Donald Trump has made it his mission to single-handedly reverse basically every accomplishment of the Biden administration. That’s especially true when it comes to the former president’s climate agenda. Trump doesn’t want to just deemphasize the fight against climate change, his policy proposals would give climate change a helping hand. But states are stepping into the void left by the federal government. Longtime climate reporter Bill McKibben tells us how.
And in headlines: Elon Musk came out swinging hard against Republicans’ Big Beautiful Bill, Gazans saw another day of violence near an aid distribution site, and Education Secretary Linda McMahon faced a grilling in the Senate.

The history you think you know wasn't just written in books--it was curated, shaped, and edited by people with their own self interests. But before that, it was lived. And the people whose lives we study weren't usually the ones who got to tell their own stories. Some voices were amplified, while others were diminished--or erased altogether.
In this episode, Sojourner Truth's famous speech at the 1851 Akron Women's Rights Convention is the starting point for unraveling hundreds of years of lost and manipulated history, reminding us why the truth must never be allowed to be forgotten.
To read the speeches for yourself, find both versions here, as well as a video demonstrating the accent Sojourner would have had:

We got a tip about a meat plant selling pig intestines as fake calamari, wondered if it could be true, and decided to investigate. Doppelgängers, doubles, evil twins and not-so-evil twins, this week. Fred Armisen co-hosts with Ira Glass.
Visit thisamericanlife.org/lifepartners to sign up for our premium subscription.
- Prologue: Fred Armisen worked up an imitation of Ira and put it into a sketch on Saturday Night Live a couple of years ago. But when they rehearsed it with an audience, there was not a roar of recognition; it seemed like Ira might not be famous enough to be mocked on network TV. Armisen finally gets a go as Ira’s doppelgänger in our studios by co-hosting this episode. (4 minutes)
- Act One: Ben Calhoun tells a story of physical resemblance — not of a person, but of food. A while ago, a farmer walked through a pork processing plant in Oklahoma with a friend who managed it. He came across boxes stacked on the floor with labels that said "artificial calamari." So he asked his friend "What’s artificial calamari?" "Bung," his friend replied. "Hog rectum." Have you or I eaten bung dressed up as seafood? Ben investigated. (26 minutes)
- Act Two: For decades, the writer Alex Kotlowitz has been writing about the inner cities and the toll of violence on young people. So when he heard about a program at Drexel University where guys from the inner city get counseling for PTSD, he wondered if the effect of urban violence was comparable to the trauma that a person experiences from war. Kotlowitz talks to a military vet from Afghanistan and a guy from Philadelphia who’s lived in some pretty bad neighborhoods to find out if they are doubles of some sort. (23 minutes)

Elon Musk is back in the news, with a New York Times investigation detailing his rampant drug use right as he hightails it out of Washington. Lovett and Dan compare notes on their own White House drug tests, then dig into Trump’s most recent comments on his Big Beautiful Bill, the legislation’s fate in the Senate, and Sen. Joni Ernst’s psychopathic consolation for people being kicked off Medicaid. Then Lovett sits down with author and history professor Erik Loomis to talk about whether the U.S. is still capable of mass mobilization—do liberals actually care about workers? How do we meet people where they’re at? And are we all too individualistic to show true solidarity?

In this episode, we sit down with Steph T. and Steph L. from Becoming Human AF Podcast for a thought-provoking conversation about empathy—what it is, how it shows up in our lives, and where it sometimes runs thin.
Together, we unpack:
🔹 How our own empathy influences how we perceive others’ empathy
🔹 The unfair societal expectations that ask women to over-empathize and assume men don’t at all
🔹 The tension between being a listener and being a fixer
🔹 The role of empathy in connecting us to our shared humanity
🔹 What happens when empathy runs dry—aka, empathy burnout
This isn’t just a trending topic—it’s a deeply human one. And this episode will challenge the way you think about emotional connection in a noisy, reactive world.

“ I marvel at every little freedom that we have. Because for three years and two months, it was all brutally taken away from me,” says Australian journalist Lei Cheng. In 2020, Lei was wrongfully detained in China after being falsely accused of leaking state secrets. Several years after her release, she took the stage at TED2025 to share her perspective on the meaning and value of freedom. Following her talk, Lei sat down for a special conversation with TED Talks Daily host Elise Hu to discuss her experience and how it’s shaped her vision for a freer future.
