The best podcasts to learn about the experiences of others

Who am I?

I am co-founder of Bosla Arts, an arts platform based in the UK sharing the work of and supporting artists and activists worldwide. Our podcast, Art Persists, interviews incredible people around the world who use art to voice their activism and as a result often face threats to their freedom. These are some of the podcasts I love to listen to that taught me about the experiences of others in the world and have also personally helped me develop my interviewing skills.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Art Persists Podcast is a new series offering a glimpse into the life of artists and activists bridging the arts, activism, and human rights around the world. Brought to you by Bosla Arts. Each episode features interviews with artists who share their first-hand experience of using art to stand up to some of the world's most feared dictators and regimes, and individuals working day and night to support and protect them. The podcasts here vary on subjects but have all influenced me as I developed my podcasting skills. More importantly, they all focus on looking sharing the life and experience of their guests - whether an incarcerated person at San Quentin prison, or a famous writer.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My list focuses predominantly on podcasts that interview incredible people from around the world. Each one has in one way or the other opened my understanding of the lives and experiences of others.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Ear Hustle

Why this podcast?

Ear Hustle is one of my favourite podcasts of all time. It really impacted the way that I see the prison system and I generally find it incredibly moving.

Ear Hustle is prison slang for eavesdropping, and that’s what listening to the show feels like: a raw, often funny, and always surprising peek into the reality of life inside prison.

Hosts Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods co-created the show that launched in 2017 while Earlonne was incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, where Nigel was a volunteer teaching photography. Since Earlonne’s release in 2018, the show has expanded to include stories from prisons across the state, including the California Institution for Women, as well as stories about getting out of prison and starting over, post-incarceration.

From finding romance, to grappling with a life sentence, to trying to parent via 15-minute phone calls, Ear Hustle stories deliver what This American Life host Ira Glass calls a “"very real” and “untragic” take on prison life.

Ear Hustle is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX, a network of independent listener-supported podcasts. Discover audio with vision at radiotopia.fm and learn more about Ear Hustle at earhustlesq.com.
