The best podcasts for Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day Combined

share icon

Share

Who am I?

I love narrative nonfiction and well-researched stories about the past. When I'm not diving into rabbit holes or debunking myths about John Quincy Adams for my own podcast, I'm spending time with my family, working as a project manager, and watching horror movies. I chose this subject because I've always enjoyed how Presidents' Day and Valentine's Day are so close to each other. I've even made my own naughty presidential Valentines featuring rhymes like this one from George Washington: "I shall be bold / And not dillydally / The weather is cold / May I forge your valley?"

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Plodding Through The Presidents revels in the lesser-known stories of the early presidents, founders, and their families. That includes scandal and romance! (Our favorite episode on this topic has to be S3 E9 - "The Sauciest Presidential Love Letters.")

What is my podcast playlist about?

Presidents' Day itself is like a weird attempt to merge both Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays into one holiday, and I'm thinking why should we stop there? Let's also absorb the nearby holiday of Valentine's Day and have one holiday that celebrates the intimate sides of the American presidents. Listening to these podcasts is the perfect way to celebrate both your Presidents' Day and Valentine's Day.

3. Explosive Love: The USS Princeton & Julia Gardiner Tyler

Why this podcast?

A favorite topic of mine, the romance of tenth President John Tyler and Julia Gardiner was already strange enough. Add in a deadly disaster on the Potomac and you've got one hell of a story.

Widowed while in office, John Tyler remarried just a few short years after his wife passed at the age of 51.
Though he'd been courting Julia Gardiner for several months, it was a catastrophic accident aboard the warship the USS Princeton that prompted Julia to reconsider.
So just what happened on board the USS Princeton? And how did it lead to marital bliss? Tune in to find out.

Politicians having affairs is nothing new in the history of the world. But what happens when they're sleeping with an enemy spy?
Join me as I talk to author and lawyer James Robenalt, author of The Harding Affair: Love and Espionage During the Great War, about Warren Harding's 15-year affair with Carrie Fulton Phillips, who became an Imperial German spy during World War I; whether we should be concerned about politicians having affairs; and whether Harding deserves a better shake than history has given him.

“If I don’t have a woman for three days, I get terrible headaches.”

That is what JFK allegedly told the UK prime minister, Harold MacMillan, after a meeting on nuclear arms. An interesting alternative to pain killers, right?

Despite being in a high-profile marriage, JFK has been linked with many women. From Hollywood stars and White House interns, to potential Soviet Spies and Mafia wives.

Kate is joined Betwixt the Sheets with Eleanor Herman to discuss the many alleged affairs and scandals, for the third instalment in our Kennedy Women series.

You can find out more about Eleanor Herman’s book, ’Sex with Presidents’ here.
