The best podcasts for people who love indie TTRPG shows

Who am I?

I host a sci-fi actual play podcast using my own rules-lite system but I also play in a bunch of games, livestreamed, recorded and offline and when I'm not playing I'm usually listening to other people playing all sorts of games. I LOVE TTRPG podcasts! I've not been doing this for a long time - I didn't play D&D until I was a grown adult but I have always been a nerd of sorts. The fact that I found this hobby and then this whole medium of consuming it is an odd mystery of rabbit holes and incidental friendships that grew out of all control and reason. I now have listened to hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of people playing these games or talking about these games and how they're made or played or really just anything about them. Almost my entire podcast list is TTRPG related and it's constantly overflowing.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is an actual play of my own game system, Cybertopia. It's a near future setting with sci-fi cyberpunky themes but differently to most actual play podcasts we have a rolling cast of 16 wonderful players taking part in small loosely connected one-shot missions, mixing up the teams each time with various objectives and scenarios to overcome.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I love TTRPGs and this list is just a sampling of some of my favourite actual play podcasts out there (I'm really sorry if I've forgotten some friends!) that might be amazing shows you've not heard of.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Planet Arcana

Why this podcast?

Everything about this show is amazing; from the players, the characters, the stories, the setting, the sound design, the music... oh my gosh the music! It's using D&D5e but you'd hardly notice because it's such a different world to any D&D game I've ever played in or listened to. They also make all their own tunes and original songs for the show and damn, do they slap!

2. Cyberpunk: Tales from the Oasis

Why this podcast?

There are surprisingly few Cyberpunk Red shows out there but the energy and production values of this one are top notch. Episodes are a lovely bitesize length but every single one packs a heck of a punch, with tight editing and sound design that consistently blows me away. The characters are hilarious and the way the players bounce off of each other never ceases to amaze me!

3. Snyder’s Return

Why this podcast?

This show is split between actual plays and interviews with people from the TTRPG scene and Adam has had some phenomenal guests on (including myself and several of the Cybertopia cast!). He's a brilliant interviewer with a great way for words and hypnotic voice and has managed to get some amazing legends on from the real upper echelons of the industry! The show also intersperses actual plays amongst the interviews, currently running through City of Mist.

4. Merely Roleplayers

Why this podcast?

Merely Roleplayers was one of the first AP shows I started listening to a ways back and I will listen as long as they keep coming. They've got a large ensemble cast like Cybertopia but they cycle through different systems and themes every few months. There's currently an ongoing Monster of the Week campaign set in rural England, which is a breath of fresh air from the usual American-ness of those stories. The thing that sets the Merely lot apart is their theatricalness, in that they are all actors/voice-actors and work in theatre as their day-jobs and this really enhances their improv and the understanding of flow and narrative in the games they play... and oh the drama!

5. $2 Creature Feature

Why this podcast?

I'm a sucker for Monster of the Week podcast and this is absolutely one of the best! Season 2 is an amazing rollercoaster journey with character development out the wazoo! The cast is a wonderful diverse mix even if just a small group but you can really get how strong their vibes are through the RP and narrative driving everyone gets involved in. Mr Ray is a fantastic keeper and the stories and plot points he puts down are superbly tantalising; I'm always on the edge of my seat at the end of each episode!
