The best podcasts for finding what movie or TV show to watch

share icon

Share

Who am I?

I love movies, tv shows, comedy specials, documentaries. There are many experts on pop culture, but I try to curate awesome lists. The question of "What should I watch tonight?" comes up all the time. Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, etc. all do a good job suggesting ideas, but nothing is better than a person.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Famous & Gravy is all about life lessons from dead celebrities. We tell the life story of famous people through an empathetic lens. Along the way, we revisit recent pop culture history.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My playlist is about great things to watch and great people to listen to. Sometimes you just need a sample to remember how great a show or movie was, and it's also good to be reminded of the artists who created the stuff we love.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Famous and Gravy

Why this podcast?

Our podcast is a reminder of great pop culture that may have been lost to time. The show also tells the stories of artists and why we enjoy their work.

On every episode we choose a celebrity who died between 1 and 10 years ago. We then go through a series of structured categories. We start by rating the first line of their NYT obituary on a scale of 1–10. We then look at their life stats, we speculate on their inner lives, and we ultimately answer the question "Would I want that life?" Each category helps weigh the desirability of a given life. Our approach is that of an empathetic biography. Our dead celebrities cross many categories of fame, including film, TV, sports, music, politics, literature, and more. Our goal is to make serious topics fun.
