Twohundredpercent - This is our Christmas Everest, Part Six: Big Break
play

12/06/20 • 32 min

Day 6 (yes, it is really only day 6) of the This Is Our Everest Advent calendar sees Edward and Ian watching the 1992 Big Break Christmas Special, regardless of where they'd rather be or what they'd rather be doing. Listen as your heroes deal with the conflict of watching one of their favourite people and one of their least favourite people simultaneously for half an hour, as all the while what Edward seemingly believes to be a ranking tournament on the professional snooker tour takes place.

There's also talk of Ian's likely whereabouts when this programme was first broadcast, a considered view of whether or not television hosts really doubled up charitable donations out of their own pocket and a discussion about the impact the Covid-19 pandemic may have had on the British dogging community. Snooker fans can watch the episode for themselves here.

Join us tomorrow morning for the oldest show that we've featured so far, and probably the oldest show that we'll ever feature in this series: The Appleyards, from 1956.

On the first of 24 daily Advent Calendar editions of This Is Our Everest, Edward and Ian ease themselves in slowly by watching an edition of Saint and Greavsie from the 22nd December 1990. With the exception of a ratty tinsel Christmas tree you'd be forgiven for forgetting this was a festive edition at all, in fact, which is pretty much OK by us.

There are philosophical discussions about exactly how much like Jimmy Greaves something needs to be before it essentially becomes Jimmy Greaves, Peter Shilton's testimonial achieves fleeting prominence and we do our level best to check golfers off our list of people to alienate forever. If you'd like to watch the episode, you can do so here.

Things are going to go downhill from here on, though, and tomorrow we're off to 1991 for an episode of the Des O'Connor Christmas Special. You can see that here.

Twohundredpercent - This is our Everest, Part Twenty-Six - Crown Court
play

11/30/20 • 39 min

On today's valedictory episode of This Is Our Everest, Edward and Ian give themselves a little treat and watch Crown Court, a programme they both love. They explore the origins of this stupid podcast, whether or not there should be degrees of treason and why they're looking forward to Brexit. The main virtue afforded by Crown Protection is assessed and Ian doesn't believe who is playing the prosecution counsel. If you'd like to watch Crown Court too and see whether or not you believe it, you can find the episodes here: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3.

This is the last episode of this podcast series, but that doesn't mean we're going to leave you alone any time soon. Tomorrow morning we start This is Our Christmas Everest, in which we watch 24 Christmas Specials in 24 days, like an Advent calendar filled with televisual diarrhea. First up, tomorrow, it's Saint & Greavsie. Spoiler alert: it turned out not to be very Christmassy.

Twohundredpercent - Podcast 322: Olga (Deceased)
play

12/23/21 • 67 min

On this week's festive extravaganza Twohundredpercent Podcast, Edward and Ian are joined by podcasting stalwart and renowned Metal fan Chris Nee to look ahead to another scintillating year of football.

Your heroes explore Chris's turbulent relationship with the beautiful game over the past year, before going on to touch on any number of hot topics. These include: the vital role the pornography industry must surely play in the normalisation and regulation of NFTs; the reason Edward's own Cryptocurrency never got off the ground; and weighing the thorny moral issues of the 2022 Qatar World Cup against the almost inevitable English success that would result from their boycott of it.

Along the way, we successfully solve football transfer culture (although unfortunately too late to save Jack Grealish's soul) and almost inevitably damage the podcast's diplomatic relations with any number of countries. Luckily, none of us were planning on going anywhere for the forseeable anyway, thanks to the great gift of Omicron, which our experts also carefully unwrap and examine.

Additionally, there's a white Bovril update and news from Carlisle United, where a dead fox nailed to a plank still mercifully has a major part to play in pre-match ceremonies.

If you'd like to hear more from Chris, you can find him on Twitter (@ChrisMNee), where you can also find us (@twoht/@200percentpod). You can also email us if you wish: twohundredpercentpodcast at gmail dot com.

In an ironic twist, today's episode of This Is Our Everest (not sponsored by Just Juice) is both the first to feature any basketball at all and also the episode least likely to appeal to basketball fans. However, Edward has a perfectly reasonable defence and Ian has been watching the 1985 NBA finals instead so couldn't care less either way. There's good news for Canada, bad news for Telford and a chiding for Leicester's lack of ambition.

How believable is Tom Cruise as an American Football player? And why has this question even arisen, in a programme ostensibly about basketball in the developing world? Your intrepid sports correspondents do their best to separate the wheat and chaff from the juice. If you'd like to watch the action, you can do so here.

Tomorrow's episode of this this podcast features an episode of That's Life from 1986. Enter at your own peril.

Twohundredpercent - This is our Everest, Part Nine - Nationwide
play

11/13/20 • 48 min

On today's This Is Our Everest, Edward and a lurgy-riddled Ian tackle the 8th June 1981 edition of the BBC's venerable flagship current affairs magazine programme, Nationwide. There are some particularly strident views about the BBC's archival policies and how well Frank Bough is aging; a terrifyingly up close and personal encounter with a tennis professional and a tour of London with Fred Housego.

Our heroes also run the rule over the political prospects of Roy Jenkins and Ian fondly recalls the good old days of scamming, before it all gets too much and the plight of - variously - fraud victims, marching bands, small business owners, the one-legged and a helpless gambling addict are met with gales of childish laughter. If you'd like to see what all the fuss is about, you can watch it here.

For those of you who like to keep up to speed with such things, tomorrow we'll be covering the 1980s Japanese-French cartoon Ulysses 31.

Twohundredpercent - This is our Everest, Part Seven - Oh Happy Band!
play

11/11/20 • 33 min

On today's This Is Our Everest, the laughter and joviality of the last few editions is brought to a grinding halt as Edward and Ian watch Oh Happy Band!, a comedy series from 1980 that is so relentlessly boring and unfunny it hasn't seen the light of day since. Until now!

There's much wistful reminiscence about how every other Croft and Lloyd sitcom is far better than this one, an explanation of how twitching an birdwatching are not quite the same thing and some thoughtful consideration of the likelihood that a home-stuffed rare bird with an electric arsehole could deceive a government keen to build a new airport. It's a special This Is Our Everest after dark edition, so if nothing else you can bask in how tired we sound, in addition to how sick and tired of programmes like this we are. You can watch it too, if you like.

Twohundredpercent - Podcast 204: Scorchio, Part 1 - Football Manager (1982)
play

04/03/20 • 73 min

Hello everybody, and welcome to the first episode of Scorchio, our new series revisiting the football video games of the past. Every week, we'll be tearing down a different game and delivering the results to you. Apologies for the slightly rough and ready nature of this first episode, but it'll be improving over the coming weeks.

In this first episode, Edward and Ian relive Ian's childhood with the classic, pioneering football management simulator, Kevin Toms' Football Manager for the ZX Spectrum. How does the granddaddy of them all stack up against the competition, 38 years after it was first released? There's also a blow-by-blow account of a genuine Football Manager malaise as it happened, some heroic feats of memory and some complete failures: the Leeds United player was, it turns out, Peter Barnes. All this plus, the most underwhelming piece of trivia ever committed to record. We hope you enjoy it. You can support more stuff like this via Patreon.

Should you wish to play the game yourselves, you can do so right here.

And if you’re wondering about any other ways in which you can prevent us from wasting away and ultimately starving to death, we also still have our Redbubble shop, for the sartorially minded amongst you, and you can get more 200% podcasts on a variety of different subjects by joining us on Patreon. We even now have a Kofi button, so do feel free to feed me stimulants in order to keep me cracking on in a caffeine-fuelled state of delirium until four o’clock every morning, and many thanks to those of you who have already been generous enough to donate.

Twohundredpercent - Podcast 325: Any more Andrew Smy?
play

02/10/22 • 55 min

The Twohundredpercent Podcast emerges from its hidey hole this week with a lime and a coconut, just in time to discuss the fizzing excitement of the 4th round of the FA Cup. Unhappiness is the order of the day at Manchester United, where only drastic measures now seem likely to be able to save their season. Your regular correspondents are on hand to pontificate on just how radical these need to be.

There's also a distinct side of aggro as Edward and Ian look back at the 200% Derby between Spurs and Brighton, from which only one of your heroes could emerge with a light heart.

In what is a surprisingly concise edition by our rambling standards, we nevertheless also disavow anyone who is still holding onto the notion that Boreham Wood being FA Cup heroes is a Good Thing, come down hard on football's growing problem with tribalism and partisanship, and helpfully decide once and for all the identity of the biggest fish in the East Midlands football pond.

Comments and complaints as ever to @twoht or @200percentpod on Twitter, or you can email us: twohundredpercentpodcast at gmail dot com.

Twohundredpercent - Podcast 312: Big Mick Energy
play

10/06/21 • 74 min

This week's Twohundredpercent Podcast is a Listeners' Questions special, with the entire agenda set by a bumper crop of queries sent in by you. Naturally, these ended up with Edward and Ian learning more about themselves and each other than ever before, but in between the discoveries there is also plenty of football chat.

Ian holds forth on the efficacy of the Pozzo brothers' approach to running Watford FC, as well as the prospect of a populist fan-led uprising changing British football forever and for the better.

Edward, meanwhile, is very keen that no-one notices how good a job Graham Potter is doing at Brighton & Hove Albion, having seen this movie before and knowing what inevitably happens next.

There's also significant consideration of onions, high winds and post-apocalyptic survivalism, all of which time and again brought us back to a similar conclusion about our current favourite Premier League football manager.

If you'd like to submit a question for us to percolate on for the next edition, you can find us on Twitter @twoht or @200percentpod, or email us: twohundredpercentpodcast at gmail dot com.
