The Wrong 'Un - #16 - Curtis Campher, TWU Talks
play

09/21/20 • 30 min

🍀At 28-5 and 78-5 in their first two ODIs against England last month, Ireland found themselves looking at the prospect of heavy defeats even before they could come out to have a bowl. Batting at seven, out walks Curtis Campher. In his first two internationals for the side, the allrounder dragged his side back into the games with two fluent half centuries before contributing vital wickets to give Ireland decent prospects of victory. If we impose the stringent cutoff of a minimum of one game played, he possesses one of the highest One Day International batting averages of all time at 127.

However, Curtis didn't grow up in the verdant surroundings of Galway or Cork like his teammates. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he came through the ranks at Gauteng and South Africa U19s. Qualifying for Ireland through his grandmother, he's taken a leap of faith which, as it stands, appears to be paying off.

Bertie and Max sat down with him to chat about his breakthrough series, coming into the Irish team, and he offers more of an outsider's perspective as to how Irish cricket appears to be building a charge into world cricket. We find out why he left South Africa for a relative cricket backwater, being part of the dawn of Irish Test cricketers, how he finds the famous Irish craic, and whether he does in fact have a ball with Tom Banton's name on it.

Oh baby, cricket's returned and it's back with the intensity of dropped Stuart Broad. 3 weeks, 3 Tests. Boom, boom, boom. In the immortal words of the great Peter Kay we are the cricket marines, the Hobnobs being dunked into the Test match tea every week, desperately shouting 'Again' as we're biologically set for constant 5 day a week cricketing immersion. "I'm going nowhere son dip me again," as another 3 Tests against Pakistan appears close on the horizon.

England wrapped up their series victory over the West Indies the other day, and with Max Parry making a long awaited return to the official roster the boys congregate to assess England's performance and more importantly how we can get Stuart Broad more angry. Chris Silverwood's side appear to be making progress and Bertie issues his key takeaways from what has been a good showing all in all. But a 2-1 defeat is the best the West Indies can realistically hope for nowadays away from home as Max bemoans how the game is failing to serve cricket in the Caribbean. Elsewhere, Ollie bemoans Sibley's lack of 'busyness' and Max destroys hopes of obtaining an international cricketing friend of the show.

And cheers to the West Indies for travelling during a global pandemic for the financial wellbeing of the English game. A trip which they didn't have to make and will have mainly helped English cricket keep its head above water.

🧹 An England clean sweep against the World Test Champions? Don't mind if I do. It may or may not have been a flash in the pan but at least it flashed bright and true as BMac appears to have Queer Eyed a previously sad, poorly dressed and unkempt England side low on confidence. All it needed was a kiwi to show them what's best about themselves.

So there's a lot to review there but Max, Sach and Bertie also have much to get into as India return with the literal unfinished business of their 2021 Test series whilst white ball king Eoin Morgan retires from his role of chief strategy merchant for England's big bashers. Elsewhere Sach can't answer a question he was primed for and Max goes into his cupboard to root around for all the latest fits.

🇳🇱 Canals, 25 degrees, the prospect of a slightly funky night out, there's a new contender for cricket's greatest away day in Amsterdam. England return to ODI cricket for the first time in almost a year bombing into a swimming pool of Dutch amateurs as Buttler and co. flayed their way to a new World Record total against an understrength Netherlands side.

Elsewhere we offer a belated assessment of England's unassailable 2-0 lead in their opening Tests of the Summer against the Kiwis. Is this a blip? Have the jigsaw pieces just fortunately fallen into place? Are England flattering to deceive? Or can we not just bask in a Formula 1 no holds barred England Test team? Who knows, but Bertie and Ollie try to unpick it all and also offer up some chat on the steaming hot ball of messy fun which is the Blast.

The Wrong 'Un - BONUS - A Day At The Oval, Surrey vs Somerset
play

04/26/22 • 19 min

🥓 The usual show is replace due to much needed holidays as Max is off travelling to Wrexham from London (yes why indeed?). BUT we couldn't leave your Tuesday feeds uncricketed and in one of the great last minute decisions Max Parry MP & Bertie headed to the Oval to soak in some County Championship. One of the *all time great days* as the two of them joined some radio friends and made their way through just the right and appropriate amount of cans and a metric tonne of food in 20 degree sunshine. Simply unbeatable. Intermittent voice memos followed and treat yourself to bitesize a slice of the Great British summer from the Oval. There is little of actual substance covered.

A big week of moving and shaking within the England men's setup. Out goes Joe Root as captain and in comes big daddy Rob Key in his top down Porsche and real ale in hand as the side's new director of cricket. What that means and what he'll be able to do is open to interpretation. Ollie has decided that since he can do nothing about who will be England's new skipper he doesn't care about it, an opinion he hasn't held regarding all of his other cricket analysis. Max Parry also opens up his wardrobe to assess the new season's IPL clobber and Bertie tries his best to keep everything on a fairly even keel. Elsewhere Ollie digs into the Women's Hundred squads and Max has a Parky Pivot.

🏃 Astonishingly we're back with regularity on your Tuesday podcast feeds and the cricket is serving up some lovely entertaining pies for us to dance down the track to. The IPL churns out top class matches like a mid-afternoon entertainment machine whilst the County Championship offers us up early season run fests / bore draws.

Bertie and Ollie in the seat this week so if you prefer Max and Sach this isn't your week. Bonus episode to come on the Men's Hundred Draft later in the week so keep your eyes peeled.

The Wrong 'Un - IPL Tees Off & The English Summer Begins
play

04/05/22 • 56 min

🍕 The English cricket season returns after a winter which has been no means devoid of cricket. So we dust off our mics to return every week with cricket takes galore from Manchester, Nottingham and cricket hub Switzerland. The IPL is underway so Sach takes a cursory look under the bonnet at some changes for this edition, whilst Ollie casts his eye across a red ball season which could hold real significance for potential England recruits. We also take some time to chat personnel for England after their latest series defeat and reflect upon the passing of the great Shane Warne.

*We think Bertie forgot to select his quality mic for this one when recording so apologise if his Boltonian tones are less crisp than usual.

The Wrong 'Un - The Collapse-along Live - 5th Ashes Test
play

01/17/22 • 84 min

🇦🇺4️⃣-0️⃣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England have engaged in their final and perhaps biggest collapse yet. Halfway through the 3rd day in Hobart things were looking rosy for England. 68-0 in a chase of 271. Two wickets fell and then in the 74 minutes of actual play after tea the remaining 8 crumbled in a manner so swift that in many ways it was the crowning and most emblematic glory of a miserable series for the Poms.

So welcome to the Collapse-along (TM) where in real time we go through England's collapse as it happened. Along with our as-live English crumble there's so much to get into: The Ashes as a whole, Australia's imperious performance, South Africa's impressive victory of India and Lord Virat stepping aside as Test captain. Enjoy!

The Wrong 'Un - The Belter at Edgbaston - Ashes 1st Test
play

06/21/23 • 44 min

😲 The Wrong 'Un returns for a bumper summer and boy have we been treated to an epic opening salvo. Australia squeeze through with two wickets to spare on a phenomenal final day as Captain Cummins and Lyon show their mettle to bring them home. Declarations, intent, flat pitches, Khawaja, keepers and send offs - so many threads to unpick as Bazball gets the sternest test of its principles and decisions yet. This series has promised so much, and if the first blows are anything to go by it certainly looks like it'll deliver. Max is sad, Bertie's here for the ride, Sach promises to be analytical over gloating and Ollie's watching Notts.
