#00035 Alida Miranda Wolff and the Infinite Journey of Vision
The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show
08/20/22 • 63 min
Welcome back to The 10,000 Heroes Show with your host Ankur Shah Delight.
The goal of this podcast is nothing short of the total evolution of society, so get settled, it’ll take a while.
Our best guess at how to do that is through individuals. Specifically, helping each one of us align our external actions with our internal sense of mission and purpose, so we gain energy every moment from that which we used to call “work”.
And that, of course, is our definition of a hero. Or, to put it another way, A Hero is someone for whom just being their best selves is the biggest contribution they can make to the world.
In this episode, I interview Alida Miranda Wolff. There’s a lot that’s impressive about Alida, from her career trajectory to her recent book to her art. But what I really love about her, and this interview, is her transparency about her own journey, and her relationship with vision.
Alida interacts daily and intentionally with her sense of vision and purpose. It wasn’t until this conversation that I realized the degree of entitlement many of us (including myself) have around vision, as if we just Deserved to know our purpose in intimate detail, or a divine figure would reveal it to us fully formed.
So here’s the challenge: take her advice and run the experiment.
Of course, we do something pretty similar in Momentum Lab, our coaching program.
The important thing to me is not the specific actions or methodology, but rather the practice of keeping that vision alive and at the forefront of our consciousness. Every month, every week, every day.

#00022 Robert MacNaughton and the Integral Perspective
The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show
02/19/22 • 103 min
Hello and welcome to episode 00022 of the Ten Thousand Heroes Podcast.
I recorded today’s interview with Robert MacNaughton.
Robert MacNaughton is an executive coach and facilitator who specializes in balancing interpersonal development alongside individual performance.
Robert founded the Integral Center in Boulder, Colorado in association with renowned philosopher Ken Wilber, which hosted an international community of thought leaders, practitioners, and "evolutionaries."
He now hosts a podcast and works as an executive coach, supports leaders in resolving the gaps between their vision, roadmap, team alignment, and sustainable execution.
I got Robert to give me a watered-down digestible overview of integral philosophy, complete with a simple color coding system, and then to present some of the best and worst features of each level of development.
The invitation to the listener is not to try to categroize yourself or the people you dislike, but rather to widen your perspective to the point where you realize every perspective has beauties and flaws, or, as Robert’s own podcast is called, “disasters and dignities”.
What are the negative consequences of my own worldview? How can I address them by integrating aspects of worldviews that I have heretofore despised. That’s the point, as far as I’m concerned...
Thanks again for listening to today’s show. Stay tuned after the interview for the debrief with my co-host Nathan Ramos. And remember to email us at [email protected] or follow us on twitter at @10khshow.

Eric Grace is a kind of an angel. And he means that more literally than can you possibly imagine. He also estimates that 40% of us are in the same boat as him.
This provenance is not always a blessing. It comes with challenges in adapting to life on Earth and mixing with the more Terran souls.
Is that a challenging cosmology for you? It was for me. But Eric is also a pragmatist and grounds all his angelic talk in working with people to help them feel comfortable and use their gifts for the greater good.
We also talk about his many adventures through the wilderness of isolation, community, and drama on the fringes of society.
It’s thoroughly deep, thoroughly entertaining, and addresses head-on the questions every human has about meaning, purpose, and belonging.

Why are you here?
What is this short and fragile life about?
These questions have easy answers in traditional cultures. You listen to the myths and stories of your elders and nod along.
But once we’re exposed to the chaos and diversity of the larger world (#thanksglobalization), the simple narratives of our ancestors suddenly seem silly and unattractive.
Rationality leads us into a desert of meaning.
But it turns out that we left something important behind: Purpose.
The Ten Thousand Heroes Show aims to restore our collective sense of meaning and fulfillment through demystifying purpose.
We present empirical techniques and rational arguments for taking Purpose seriously, while leaving room for fun and mystery.
And we interview inspiring humans along the way, each of whom has a clear sense of Purpose, and whose sense of Purpose has allowed their success.

The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show

In this episode I present what I learned from William Ury's The Third Side.
The basic idea is that our communities and societies are the most important element in developing an effective conflict management system, and that the essence of being effect is to exert peer pressure on resolving the conflict instead of taking the "side" of any of the parties.
Hence, the 3rd side...

#00047 It’s time to Be Who You Are with Noah Rasheta
The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show
01/07/23 • 62 min
The first interview of Season 5! The first interview of 2023! I am so excited!
I’m also delighted to have had some really beautiful moments with my guest, Noah Rasheta.
Noah’s probably best known as the host of the Secular Buddhism podcast, and an author, and a paragliding instructor. I was really moved by his story – from Dan Greening, a previous guest – and I really benefited from his story, and his Vibe.
The “Vibe” is a hard concept to define. For me, it’s something about what a person has really integrated into themself, versus just what we say or claim to have learned.
There’s a lot of people who talk about Buddhism. Who are interested in Enlightenment. Who have spent years (or decades) studying it. And I’ve met quite a few of those in my travels and my studies.
And then there’s the sense I get when I’m around someone who feels “different”. And that’s the Vibe. That there’s more than an intellectual understanding, but a lived experience behind the words.
It’s what Uncle Jamal would call “Knowledge of the Heart” as opposed to “Knowledge of the Tongue”. And Noah has it.
And when someone has it, it almost doesn’t matter what’s being communicated out loud. Because the real communication is a bass note, almost inaudible, below the words, and more impactful than the words could ever hope to be.
Cherished listeners: Noah Rasheta.

What did this episode awaken in you? Don’t be shy.

This is Ten Thousand Heroes and I’m Ankur Shah Delight.
This episode is about the role of conflict and transition in our lives. I also try to define purpose empirically and make a pragmatic argument for why the way you tell your life story really matters (because it determines what you allow in your future).
This show, Ten Thousand Heroes, is about aligning our life with our purpose.
Most of the time that requires:
- Confusion
- Hard work
- Addressing conflict, and
- Unconditional love
How would we treat each other if we assumed every person we met was a hero in disguise (just like we are)?
How would our society and culture change if we did that?
We’re here to support you and challenge you during that journey.

#00091 How to turn Uncertainty into a superpower? April Rinne: Flux, Uncertainty, and Decision Making

What did this episode awaken in you?

April Rinne’s whole message is about Flux. Flow, change, flexibility, rolling with the punches, and paying attention.
That’s how I capture it, at least. Her actual 8 flux superpowers are here: https://fluxmindset.com/8-superpowers
In keeping with the theme, this interview is long and flowing. I did minimal editing to show how the conversation naturally progressed, as a demonstration (in one realm) of what April is bringing to the world.
There is a ton of wisdom about dealing with change and how to see our own story as part of the episode, as well as some really beautiful reflection and storytelling from April on what led her to who she is today.
Enjoy!

#00118 A Sober Roadmap to Nuclear Disarmament (with Ward Hayes Wilson)
The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show
04/06/24 • 63 min
As Lao Tzu used to say:
"Do the hard thing while it is still easy."
According to my guest, Ward Hayes Wilson, it's a pretty good time to work on nuclear disarmament.
This is precisely the opposite of all my reflections on the issues, which usually end in hopeless shrugging and attempts to resign myself towards guaranteed nuclear annihilation.
(Much harder when you have kids!)
Ward has a very different take, which is rooted in 30 years of obsessive study of the issue and the fundamental premise -- which he has confirmed will military leaders around the world -- that nuclear weapons are simply not useful for warfare.
Bonus: He's also smart, hilarious, and does great accents.

#00104 We’re writing “The Book” on Purpose
The Ten Thousand (10,000) Heroes Show
09/02/23 • 14 min
If I were to write a book about purpose today (I have another ~3 hours before I need to pick up Jasmine), what would it be about?
Which is maybe the same question as: What are the most important questions for me to address on this show?
In the audio/video version of the episode (links below!) I’ll explain these things a bit more, but here’s the rough outline version:
Part I: Introducing Purpose Preface: A cocktail party in 2045My goal for this book is to catalyze a fundamental change in how we relate to ourselves and each other.
Chapter 1: What is Purpose? We begin by surveying various definitions of purpose and constructing our own, shared, understanding of purpose.
Chapter 2: Purpose is Dead. Long Live Purpose? We look at how our definition of Purpose is related to definitions in our past, and what it means to “rescue” Purpose from religion.
Part II: Why Purpose Matters Chapter 3: Why My Purpose Matters To Me: Happiness, Sexual Potency, and Infinite Wealth ***Some pragmatic motivators to help us understand how having a sense of Purpose could change your life.
Chapter 4: Why My Purpose Matters To Us: World Peace and Human PotentialSome ideological motivations for purpose. How human evolution is related to individual purpose.
Part III: Finding Your Purpose Chapter 5: What Purpose Feels LikeHow do you know you are actually living your purpose and not just kidding yourself in order to be cool?
Chapter 6: How To Find Your PurposeAn incredibly simple and practical method that requires honest observation and introspection.
Chapter 7: Purpose and TimeHow your Purpose may change over time and what that implies.
Chapter 8: How To Use PurposeHow you can use Knowing Your Purpose to change your state of mind, make better decisions, and build community,
Chapter 9: Purpose and HeroismHow living your Purpose is related to Heroism, and what is really going on (internally) when we investigate our purpose.
Part IV: Purpose Traps Chapter 10: The Generality TrapMy purpose is to be myself / My purpose is to help people
Chapter 11: The Specificity TrapMy purpose is to be an extra-innings pitcher for the Oakland A’s
Chapter 12: The Enlightenment TrapMy purpose is to Be Here Now
Chapter 13: The Midas TrapMy purpose is to make money
Part V: After Purpose Chapter 14: Momentum Lab: How to do AnythingAn overview of Compound Momentum and using Purpose iteratively
Chapter 15: Downscaling Purpose into VisionHow to draft a supernaturally-sharp Vision rooted in your Purpose
Chapter 16: Uncommon ConsistencyOnce you have a detailed plan connected to your Purpose, the main challenge is doing it.
