The episode opens on an archeological dig in the Ecuadorian highlands, indicating it will be a doozy of cultural appropriation.
In fact, Production Note: After the episode aired, the network found out that 'bichos' also means 'balls' in Colombia and Venezuela. Apparently, John Shiban, nor anyone else, knew that when he wrote the episode. Google translate says it means “bugs” but further research proves bichos is vulgar in many countries. Amazing.
Some of the excavators unearth an urn, called an Amaru, with the skeleton inside. They alert the Drs to the discovery and Dr. Bilac (bee-lack) (bee-lack) explains why they cannot take it with them. It’s sacred and Dr. Roosevelt actually says “I thought you understood and could handle these people.” I, for one, am looking forward to his death here in the open.

Chester's fries have vanished but that's not the only magic we get this episode.
Apology: Late in the episode Kristen says "regular religion" which she 100% apologizes for and acknowledges as an ignorant thing to say. She won't make this a non-apology by explaining it away and is sorry to have said it and failed to catch it in the moment.

After several murders occur within a Haitian refugee camp, Mulder and Scully are caught in the middle of a secret battle involving a Voodoo priest and the camp commander.
TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE
In Folkstone, North Carolina, we open on the happiest of homes. Jack is vomiting in the bathroom, his wife is scared of him, and the baby is crying. He just wants to eat his breakfast in peace! But the mealworms didn’t get the message.
Jack McAlpin, an agitated Marine Corps private, drives his car into a tree after several hallucinatory episodes and is apparently killed. On the tree is a veve, a drawn voodoo religious symbol.
Wikipedia: A veve is a religious symbol commonly used in different branches of Vodun throughout the African diaspora, such as Haitian Vodou. Veves should not be confused with the patipembas used in Palo, nor the pontos riscados used in Umbanda and Quimbanda since these are separate African religions.
McAlpin is the second purported suicide among troops stationed at an INS compound processing refugees from Haiti. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully visit the compound to investigate McAlpin's death.

In fictional Milford Haven, New Hampshire, a 4-person high school parent-teacher committee meets to discuss various social events.
The adults initially appear to be socially conservative, debating whether students should perform the musical Grease or Jesus Christ Superstar because the former uses the "F" word and the latter is not "appropriate for this high school."
However, when the group ends the meeting in prayer, they light a candle and recite a black magic chant to the "lords of darkness."
PRODUCTION: The high school where much of this episode takes place is named Crowley High School, presumably after Aleister Crowley, whose theories on "magick" shocked his contemporaries and heavily influenced modern Wicca.
Later, a group of students goes out into the woods at night to play with black magic at a "witches' altar," an attempt of the two boys to "score" with the two girls in the group. Which, honestly, good move for the 90s. I was super into (what I later understood to be) white-washed Wicca in my teens.
Their reading from a black magic book causes unexplainable things to happen, causing all but one of the teenagers to flee. Andrea recites the Lord’s Prayer as she runs away.
The remaining teen, Jerry Stevens, is choked to death by an unseen force. His mutilated body is discovered the next day, leading Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to investigate.
Body desecration doesn’t phase Scully in this episode.

The Hills took a last-minute, multi-day road trip from their home to Niagra Falls, up through Montreal, and back home. Most of what they recall, or what they recalled prior to hypnosis, is pretty typical stuff. Long drives, worrying about where to stay that would allow the dog, stopping at diners, getting directions you can’t understand, getting off track then back on track. Standard stuff.
----
Kristen's take: Late one night, the Hills were traveling home to get ahead of the hurricane. During one of their stops, some assholes took note of the Hills and got ahead of them on the road. Later in the night, on an unfamiliar road, the assholes created a roadblock and harassed, or worse, the Hills. (Probably worse, with the torn dress and dragged dress shoes). But that's not an interesting story, or one easy to recon with because no one would've been on their side in that instance. But, aliens? YES!
