How to Put Together an Effective Digital Marketing Budget (with Rich Brooks)
The Profitable Website: Digital Marketing Secrets For Small Business Success
03/08/21 • 47 min
I don’t know what it was like when you were a kid, but when I was growing up, I’d usually get a bit of money for my birthday.
Now I’m not talking “crazy money” here—I mean the kind of “10 dollars taped into a card from Great-Aunt Edna” that you probably got too.
For me, that was the best—both because it meant I had to be intentional about what I bought, but also because I knew I was going to buy SOMETHING...
Sure enough, that money always got spent on one awesome toy or another—and I rarely borrowed more than I had from my parents.
Why does all this matter?
Well, as today’s podcast guest would tell you, having a budget when it comes to your marketing can be just as liberating.
Rich Brooks has been the founder and president of Flight New Media, a digital agency in Portland, Maine, for nearly a quarter-century.
And as Rich explains, a marketing budget can be just as fun to spend as Edna’s ten-spot was back in the day.
First, because it directs your thinking toward results—and consequently helps you get them. If you only have so much to spend, you’re going to spend it wisely.
And second, knowing you have money to spend on marketing means that money is ABSOLUTELY getting spent on marketing...
Which is going to lead to the kind of business success you just don’t see without investing in growth.
I had a great time talking to Rich, and it turned out to be a really fascinating episode, and I think you’re really going to enjoy this one too.
You’ll never look at your marketing the same way again.

Story-Selling: How to Use Stories to Write Better Copy (with Jules Dan)
The Profitable Website: Digital Marketing Secrets For Small Business Success
07/06/20 • 43 min
The other day I was watching a rerun of Seinfeld.
It was one of my favorite episodes where George was getting changed after swimming in the pool and Jerry's girlfriend walked in on his ‘shrinkage’.
I was laughing my head off.
And it got me thinking...
Why do we even watch re-runs in the first place?
Well, it turns out humans love predictability and get hooked on nostalgia (and of course a great storyline).
But not every story is created equally.
Some are entertaining, others are more inspiring.
For example...
Have you ever read an ad or watched a video and been completely entranced by the story?
It almost feels like you forget you’re being sold to, right?
That’s one of the many reasons why I love to strategically use stories all over my clients’ websites.
Whenever I review a website, I’m always paying attention to how well the business owner positions the customer as the hero and themselves as the guide.
(That’s the secret sauce to selling without selling by the way).
But a common mistake I see with my students' websites...
Is that their stories lack meaning and emotional connection to the intended person (that’s your customers).
That’s where my guest Jules Dan can help you.
On today’s podcast, we’ll help you fill those story gaps. (LINK)
I recently did a podcast with him on his show, Storytelling Secrets.
I was curious when he mentioned you can easily write great copy by using stories from past customers...
Using an interview.
So I invited him on today to teach you...
How to suck the stories out of your ideal client/customers and use them in your marketing.
So, if the hardest part for you is knowing what to actually say in your stories...
Jules and I discuss a simple 4 step strategy you can implement today.

Troubleshooting Facebook & Google Ads: Live Coaching Call
The Profitable Website: Digital Marketing Secrets For Small Business Success
08/10/20 • 30 min
One of my favorite things to do is to hop on coaching calls with up and coming small businesses. I love seeing my students walk away smiling with an action plan.
Coaching calls that trigger lightbulb moment for my students, really light me up (see what I did there?).
Okay, but seriously!
That’s because just one simple tweak can change a new business owner's life.
And today I’m excited to share with you one of those coaching calls on the podcast today.
I’m chatting with Jessie and she’s been running a lot of FB and Google ads to her subscription box website.
She’s getting people to her site, but they’re not converting.
Now, normally I don’t talk about e-commerce stores (I’m much more geared towards service-based businesses).
That being said, there were so many great lessons in here I know you’d find extremely valuable for YOUR business (especially if you have trouble getting your FB or Google ads to convert!).
This episode is packed with tips, so bring your notepad.
Here’s a little sample of today's podcast.
**The biggest red flag I see most new Facebook advertisers make. Fixing this one simple thing could mean thousands to your bottom line.
**The critical question to ask yourself that clicks ‘reset’ on your ads when nothing seems to work. When nobody is buying it always comes down to answering this question
**How to ramp up the conversions of your ads. Most business owners have these little nuggets hidden in their office clutter (and no, it’s not a testimonial).
**Close more sales on your Google AdWords. Quickly diagnose why your people are clicking but not converting. This one tweak saves you hours of needless testing and puts money back in your pocket.
**The TRUTH about bad product images and why they scare away fresh clicks to your website. You’ll be shocked to hear how easy it is to turn a crappy product photo into an irresistible offer.
This week's podcast is dedicated to helping you demystify why your FB & Google ads might not be converting the way you want them to.
And by the way I LOVED doing this, so keep an eye out for these in the future.
