The Postpartum Revolution

The Postpartum Revolution

Annie Hopkins, PT, RYT

Welcome to The Postpartum Revolution! This podcast was born because, as a pelvic health physical therapist, I’ve heard and seen the ways our system has failed postpartum people in America. Newly postpartum people have repeated the same questions to me, with fear in their eyes and fatigue written all over their bodies, and I’ve grown tired of soothing them with the reassurance that it’s “all a part of the process, it’s normal to feel like this”. I began to wonder - what the hell kind of “normal process” is this, that produces tired and scared mothers? While not everyone has a negative experience with childbirth and postpartum, many people do. A lot of factors influence our postpartum experience: understanding how your body recovers, how much community and financial support you have, and how well our society helps to support a new family. My goal is to provide education about the postpartum recovery process, so you can set yourself up for a successful return to the things that bring you joy. I also want to bring awareness to the larger, systemic challenges that pregnant and postpartum people face, so that collectively we can start to turn the tide of our culture, and our children won't be trapped in an unhealthy and unsupported birth and postpartum culture. We have lost our power in the birth and postpartum world, and our loss is directly linked to other people's gain. It's time to take back the power over our bodies, our births, and our postpartum health. We are the change we have been waiting for. Let's go.

Alright, my Revolutionaries, grab your partner and give this episode a listen together. After you birth a child, you realize that your body needs to heal and get stronger to keep up with your kiddo, but what we don’t mention is that the non-birthing parent needs to get strong too!

The typical “prepare for baby” talk involves car seats and changing diapers. But, were you ever asked, “Are you physically strong enough to carry a 20 lb kettlebell around all the dang time?”

Probably not… the physical demands of children are hard. And nobody warns soon-to-be parents of what their body is about to endure.

The lifting, the pulling and tugging, the jumping, and more, our body is in the frontline of injury.

You wouldn’t put your body through a marathon without training, so why is parenting treated any differently?

Today, I chatted with Jason Levine, an orthopedic physical therapist and a father of two girls. PT to PT, we discussed the physical demands of children, how you can prevent these child-induced injuries by getting creative with your daily movement and finding the right care based on your individual needs.

Here are the links to Jason’s amazing resources. (Seriously, join his FB Group for inspiring ways to bring exercise into you and your child’s life!)

Wait, I thought this wasn't a parenting podcast?? (It's not.) Think back to the sex education you received as a kid... chances are, it wasn't all that informative or empowering. And we all muddled through our lives, probably ashamed of our bodies in some way, scared of sex (but also intrigued), figuring out our boundaries as we went. Hopefully we made it to adulthood unscathed (sadly, this is unlikely - 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, according to RAINN).
Ok, now here we are, entering our own parenting journey... will we let the cycle continue? The shame, inadequate knowledge, fear... I guess we made it through ok, so let's just hope for the best? I wouldn't judge you if you did... how can we teach what we don't know, or model behaviors we've never seen, all while possibly facing some major demons from our own past? It's overwhelming. But I have great news...
Caiti Courtier saw these struggles and created a solution. She saw how the kids in her Health classes were asking the same basic questions about sex, about their bodies, about love, about relationships... how they were hungry for knowledge and just begging for someone to give them the honest truth, no frills, no judgement. And she did the best she could in the classroom, but public education systems are so diverse, it's not possible to "get it right" when talking about anything other than human anatomy and function. So, who is left to teach these kids? PARENTS. And so The Parent Sex Ed Blueprint was born.
This episode is a goldmine of information: practical methods, pro tips, fun facts, and why changing the way we understand our bodies can change the world. Seriously.

As a pelvic PT, I get asked the same questions a lot, so I thought I'd record an episode talking about the most common things postpartum people ask me.
So, here's what I want you to know about your pelvic floor:
- It needs time and rest to heal during the first 6 weeks postpartum
- A happy pelvic floor lives in a calm and rested body, so why are we so resistant to rest?
- Leaking pee is not normal (and while I'm at it, a word about the word "normal)
- Painful sex is not normal
- Constipation is not normal
- Prolapse happens, and it doesn't have to be scary
We don't know our pelvis very well, due to lack of information and proper education... and unfortunately we humans tend to fear what we don't know. The purpose of my career, and this podcast, is to educate people. Because education is the antidote to fear and anxiety. Sure, we can be in a crappy place, but if we understand why and how to get ourselves out of it, we're ok. I want you to feel confident and empowered to take your postpartum healing into your own hands, ask for what you need, and find the team to support you, so you can ride off into the sunset like the badass mother that you are.

The first 3 months after childbirth are a tricky time (understatement of the year, I know). You want to feel fit and strong again, but are also immensely tired. Your body is sore, squishy, stinky, sweaty... you feel anything but sexy. You hear conflicting advice - should I rest? Exercise more? What's the best, fastest, safest way to feel at home in my body again? Who can I trust to guide me?
Enter Lindsay McCoy.

Lindsay is a busy mom of 4, dog owner, wife, birth doula, personal trainer, and co-founder of One Strong Mama, an online pre and post-natal exercise program.

Lindsay has a classic story of having her first child only to realize there is so much wrong with the way women are prepared and set up for the birth of a child.

She knew that the system was broken and she knew that she needed to change that.

By her second child, she was able to prepare herself better for a much better experience.

Lindsay understood that it wasn’t realistic for a postpartum mom to go back to running 5+ miles a day, or back to CrossFit training just 6 weeks after birth.

Between not knowing whether to rest or to exercise, our system sets us up for failure. Thus, Lindsay and her co-founder Lauren Ohayon created One Strong Mama.

OSM is a very educational-based program that helps pre and postnatal women start small movements that will gradually lead them to their fitness goals, all in due time.

She focuses on avoiding fear-based language and setting up the foundation of knowledge, so every woman can make the choice that fits their body and lifestyle needs.

First trimester: nausea

Second trimester: eat all the things! (but don’t gain “too much” weight)

Third trimester: heartburn, still eating all the things and watching the scale

Fourth trimester: time to go on a diet to lose the baby weight!

This old familiar pattern is so engrained in our lives.. it’s in movies, diet culture, blogs, memes... so this all must be normal right? Nothing we can do about it, it’s all just part of the sacrifice birthing people sign up for when they decide to become parents.

Right?

Wrong.

I talked with registered dietitian and perinatal nutrition specialist Shelby Guptill about how we can nourish ourselves throughout our pregnancy and postpartum journeys. And guess what? Nausea, cravings, heartburn, bloating... they’re common, but not normal! AND there’s a way to combat these ailments through food.

No fad diets. No miracle products. Just a food first, supplements second approach to nourishing the birthing person along their journey. And the best part? Shelby is here to teach you how to do it! (aka no more google rabbit holes, judgey mom blogs, and wasted money on supplements your neighbor “heard were helpful”). Our postpartum bodies need to be nourished with whole foods, not deprived of calories. In fact, Shelby argues that we need MORE nutrients, food variety, and calories so that we can heal our bodies and feed our infants.

We also talk about weight gain and weight loss, the BS that is BMI, and how to start listening for that deep inner wisdom that we all possess (it's still there, despite all the doubts that we have been taught to fear!). Nourishing ourselves is a lifelong pursuit, and pregnancy is the perfect time to start.

Female hormones are finally getting their time in the sun - and everyone wants to talk about "how to balance our hormones"... but is anyone asking WHY our hormones are out of balance?
During early postpartum, a period of hormonal imbalance is just a part of the deal - childbirth changes our bodies and our hormones are no exception. Our systems are designed to find balance again, but the conditions must be right... this is why ancient wisdom teaches that rest and restoration during the 4th trimester is so vital. But here in modern day America, motherhood is anything but rest... we are overworked, underfed, and overtraining all in the name of "health".
Enter Erin Holt.

Erin is a functional medicine nutritionist who takes the term "nutrition" to a whole new level... it's not just what we eat, it also includes how we are (or aren't) nourishing ourselves holistically, and her "unique" approach to hormone health addresses the whole picture.
We talk about how...
- Hormones are not the chief problem - hormones are RESPONDING to the chief problem
- No one has cured anybody by correcting a lab value: lived experience first, labs second.
- Thyroid meds without a life that supports your thyroid doesn't cut it.
- Our culture has no idea how to handle postpartum depression and grief (the grief associated with loss of self), so we easily fill the hole with trying to "fix" - dieting, etc.
- We’ve been taught that our bodies are something to fear, to not trust, and we’ve divorced ourselves from our bodies.
So, lab values and supplements aside, how do we heal hormones? (hint: it's not exercise and calorie restriction like we've been told). In order to reclaim our female bodies, to understand that we are not broken, flawed, crazy, etc. we need to:
- Set boundaries - we cannot continually give to others
- Feed ourselves completely with adequate calories and nourishing foods
- Manage our stress response
- Learn how to quiet down to listen to our body's natural rhythms - tracking how our energies cycle with our menstrual cycle/the moon.
- Let our intuition guide us out of the chaos that is modern day America
