In this episode, we are talking about how many parents are struggling with the changes we are seeing in our children’s education.

Whilst there is still a “preferred path” proposed by our education system ... more and more parents are finding that this model might not be best supporting their child’s temperaments, interests, and needs.

Is the educations system fit for purpose?

And if not - how can our parents support our children better?

We talk about modeling the “right” behavior - because let’s face it - our kids learn through observation rather than being preached at! And we discuss the importance of values and helping our kids understand what makes them tick.

How do parents guide their children through the technology minefield?

We know the pitfalls after all! Whilst our kids (who have grown up with technology,) cannot recognize the problems involved.

Andrea is all about using technology for Creating - Communicating & Connecting rather than just Consuming.

We discuss the importance of frank and open conversations with our kids.

There is so much to discuss:

What a year 2020 has been already! Our children have so much to navigate at the minute, that it can be really daunting for parents to learn how to relinquish control.

It’s our responsibility to guide our children through all the challenges and obstacles that they are facing.

If you can relate to this, you’ll love this episode with Tia Fagan, who encourages us beautifully to parent from a place of curiosity rather than fear.

When we learn to let go and parent from the heart - it somehow takes the pressure away from us parents to be perfect and frees our children also from having to measure up all the time - it can be truly liberating.

Tia explains that when we release control and open up space for our children to learn, they begin to trust their own inner guidance. Our children are then better equipped to navigate the challenges they face, safe in the knowledge that they will weather their storms -with is by their sides. ~~~~~

Tia Fagan is a Certified Conscious Parent Coach, certified with Dr. Shefali Tsabary in the Conscious Parenting MethodTM and with the Jai Institute for Parenting.

As a mother of twin daughters, now in college, she has experienced each developmental stage of parenting children. Tia's passion is helping parents strengthen relationships, increase connection, and improve communication within their family.

Tia helps parents understand why their child is behaving the way they are and how-to guide, connect, and support them to create thriving relationships.

Tia has a gift for showing up without judgment and guiding with support and compassion.

Masks Off Podcast : Who are you behind the masks you wear? Begin undoing patterns. Stop living for others. Start healing. Shift your mindset.

Tia Fagan and Kim Gross talk about the masks we have worn and those we continue to work on removing.

Tune in for a raw and real talk about awakening ourselves, life questions we ponder, wisdom teachings, and how we peel back the masks we wear while supporting and guiding others to do the same.

Remove your masks, live your life.

Throughout this episode, I came from a place of learning - and Elena kindly fielded my clunky questions with kindness and compassion.

We dived right in, discussing the dangers of conversion therapy (there is a 57% suicide rate with this treatment); and how this comes from wanting the ‘best for our kids’ whilst parenting from fear.

75% of women (yes - us Mums) have had a negative experience in sexuality and as a result, we are parenting from a place of deep protection and trauma.

“When fear leads the show, that's when we make decisions that are regrettable.”

LGBTQ is the only marginalized communities who are not born into families who are of the same marginalized communities. The parents do not ‘get it’ and as a result need to be intentional in getting a greater understanding.

Elena suggests how parents might field these conversations; and how with greater understanding and knowledge - we will be best serving ourselves and future generations by parenting and grand-parenting better in the future. ~~~

Elena Joy Thurston is an inspirational speaker and founder of the Pride and Joy Foundation.

She grew up in a turbulent home, joined a conservative church as a teenager, put herself through college, married and birthed 4 beautiful children, and then.... Life 2.0 brought a divorce, leaving/getting kicked out of her church, a beautiful love story, and a successful new career!

Her viral TEDx talk regarding her experience with Conversion Therapy has paved the way for speaking engagements around the country.

2020 has been an incredible year - and for many ( it is late October at the time of recording ) it is beginning to take its toll. We are heading into a winter of uncertainty and this is creating a huge amount of stress for many families. So how can parents parent from such a place of unreliability and confusion? In this solo episode I discuss what parents can do :

Ditch the Guilt Practice Self Care - which involved Self-Compassion and Setting Boundaries Being more Deliberate and Intentional

Because, when the stress levels rise - so must the levels of support. ~~~~~

How many times a day are our brains bombarded with negativity and rubbish? It affects our behavior and mood.

My guest on this episode calls these intrusions, “brain hacks”; and Doreen has recently certified as an Unhackable Coach!

In this episode, we discuss the importance for us parents to be aware of what we are being exposed to and how, by monitoring these brain hacks, we can adopt a less reactionary approach to parenting. In turn, this awareness helps us to calmly guide our children through the myriad of daily challenges that they face throughout the adolescent years.

We talk about how our kids can take ownership of their feelings and their thoughts - thus equipping them with the emotional resilience to become more responsible in their decision making. All that, and a smattering of neuroscience, this action-packed episode will help you ‘walk the talk’ and become that shining example for your children!!

BIO: Doreen Steenland, Certified Professional Christian Life Coach:

“I empower Christian Moms to launch emotionally competent world-changers who love well. My goal is for parents to become unhackable Moms who empower unhackable teens.

The Moms I work with empower their teens to block unauthorized access (brain hack) to their thoughts and emotions! They raise teens that know what they believe, who are comfortable in their skin, and have amazing social skills that will impact influence, and lead others so they can change the world! I believe growing the next generation in emotional intelligence will be the key to making lasting changes worldwide.”

Doreen lives in the United States with her husband Richard and is the owner of Living Full Life Coaching. She’s Mom to three amazing young adults, one who has launched at 23 and she truly gets that parenting is messy! When she is not coaching parents, she is golf, walking, biking, or hiking!

There is a great deal of uncertainty in the world at the minute; and our kids are bearing the brunt of this. They have been away from school for many months - and now they are entering an environment that should feel familiar - and yet it’s not; because the education system has been given a bit of an overhaul because of COVID.

Taking it one step further, our students are struggling to adjust to university & college life that doesn’t even compare to that of last year.

In this episode, we are discussing how our teenagers are adjusting - and how we can support them through this process. JoBeth suggests trying thoughts on for size.

It’s important to acknowledge that we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future - and we need to be OK with that. To accept that outside circumstances aren’t going to make us happy and she encourages us to find joy - through a more positive mindset. It’s not necessarily the big things - it’s the little things that bring us joy ... a soft blanket and the first drink of coffee in the morning. It’s so important for parents to watch our words. We need to give them thoughts that serve them better.

~~

JoBeth is a college instructor, life coach, wife, mother of two, and foster care advocate. JoBeth has been teaching Public Speaking at the University of Arkansas for 5 years. Previous to that, she was a high school teacher. JoBeth has always felt a pull towards helping others and as a high school senior all she knew is that she wanted to help others.

Today she is doing just that, helping others. JoBeth works diligently to provide quality education and coaching to her clients. From her experience as a college instructor and her personal experience as a college student, JoBeth has created a coaching platform that gives college girls everything they need to do all the things in college and still enjoy life.

In this episode we are talking about some of the difficulties our children are experiencing whilst transitioning back to school/university after a prolonged period away from education due to the Coronavirus.

We talk about how we can help our children to redefine what education means to them - and rebuilding expectations; because things are changing so rapidly at the minute.

We also talk about the importance of LEARNING rather than education just being the grades that can be achieved at school & universities. Tertiary education is not necessarily a path that suits every child - and that’s OK. There are other options available - and equally important. ~~ Sonja Montiel has served more than 20 years in the college admissions profession, having extensive experience in the areas of freshman, transfer, and international admissions.

Sonja founded College Confidence in 2002 with a philosophy that college planning must be driven by the teen through reflection, transparency, and accountability, which can only be done with parents who are empathetic, knowledgeable, and patient. She believes that teens are empowered when they understand all of their options after high school through conversations that being between parents and their teens.

"Our children come through us, not for us, but for the lessons they reflect to us, during their journey, in an effort to grow us up along the way."

When we were young we were told that children should be seen and not heard. Now - as parents ourselves, we are told that our children’s needs are paramount. Somewhere along the line we have missed out! We are often told to trust our gut, our intuition. But how can we trust it (or even hear it) if we have not yet discovered who we truly are ourselves? Through having years of putting other’s needs first, and not having a voice, many of us struggle to follow our own instincts; and yet Kim and I are in agreement that it is on our instinct that we must rely as parents - because we know our family’s needs the best.

In this episode Kim and I explore the importance of hearing that inner voice and sometimes, relinquishing control. As parents, it’s scary to drop the reins - but by allowing our children to lead the way in their own lives, we set ourselves up for more connection and less confrontation.

Whilst listening to our own heart we must teach our children to do the same; and with that comes the likelihood of things not always going according to plan - and that’s totally OK!

In this episode we are talking about the developmental stages that our children go through on their path towards adulthood; and why the teenage years can often be so turbulent.

Invariably when we are dealing with teenagers we find ourselves being ‘triggered’ by their behavior - and Jacci explains why this is more to do with the parent rather than the child!

Jacci discusses - what she calls - “Middle of the Road Parenting” and why it’s necessary to not expect too much from ourselves or our children. ~~~~~

Jacci is a psychotherapist and coach who specializes in helping families, parents, and individuals better understand how their thoughts impact their reality. She has over 30 years of experience in working with children and families, her career started as a nursery nurse working in both mainstream and EBD schools. In 2004 Jacci began a fostering career that lasted 13 years. Fostering mainly teenagers with complex needs prompted her to go on to train in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy. More recently Jacci has included coaching using ‘The 3 Principles’ in her private practice based in Coppull, Lancashire.

Jacci offers support through her Parent-Plus page on Facebook as well as having a podcast all-around mental health called Living Life Being Human.

Jacci is a mum of three, her eldest son is now 33, her daughter is 31 and her youngest is 16, she also has an amazing boisterous two and a half-year-old grandson who teaches her something new every day.
